Chapter Twenty-Five

The trio of Hunter's were standing around Baby in the garage. Jenny was shoving a shotgun into her duffle bag, making a struggling noise to zip it up. Sam looked over at her as the zipper snapped off, and she scowled.

"Dammit." She grumbled, flicking it away as she tore it open. "Looks like we're going shopping soon."

"That's the third duffle bag this year, Jen." Dean frowned as she smiled sarcastically.

"Well, if we had an actual house... Or a damn RV like I've been suggesting since the dawn of fucking time, my boots wouldn't be snapping the zippers." She complained as Dean rolled his eyes.

"We aren't getting an RV."

"Right. I forgot we don't make any money." Jenny opened the trunk, tossing her duffle bag in, a shirt falling out along with one of her heels. She sighed quietly, turning her head to see Dean waving the keys in the air. She frowned, eyeing him suspiciously.

"You want to drive?" He asked with a smile as Jenny's eyes widened in surprise.

"I— What?" Dean deadpanned before standing up straighter and shrugged.

"Guess not." He turned around, Jenny grabbing his hand and snagging the keys out of them. Sam watched in confusion as she had a beaming smile on her face, rushing to the drivers side.

Sam turned to Dean. "Have you never let her drive?" He asked as Dean shook his head.

"No." Jenny mused, turning to Dean, the grin still plastered on her face. "And it's about damn time. Samurai got to drive it before I do!" Jenny slid into the backseat as Dean walked over to Sam, who was about to get in next to Jenny.

"Ah. Backseat." He gestured to the other door and Sam rolled his eyes, the two switching. Dean started the car with a grin, turning to Dean.

"I take back what I said." He frowned at her, tilting his head. "'Bout hating you."

"Mhm." He hummed as Jenny backed out of the garage, driving out of the neighborhood.

Jenny pulled up to a street, staring down a school bus as it came to a halt, the trio watching Matt get off and start walking the opposite direction of his house.

"Isn't his house that way?" Sam gestured back to where Jenny was driving, the two passengers up front nodding.

Jenny turned off the car, the three stepping out and following Matt down into the woods. "This isn't suspicious at all." She murmured to the brothers, continuing to follow Matt.

The three paused when Matt knelt down, examining a grasshopper. Sam cleared his throat, startling the boy.

"Hey, Matt. remember us?" Jenny waved to the boy with a welcoming smile, one the boy didn't return.

"What are you doing here?" Matt asked, standing up quickly. Jenny crouched down as the grasshopper jumped towards her, catching it mid-air. Dean watched as she stood up, peeking through her hands to look at the bug.

"Well.." Dean cleared his throat as Jenny looked at him. "We want to talk to you."

"You guys aren't here to buy a house, are you?" Matt asked, shifting awkwardly. Dean shook his head, and Matt's stance suddenly became nervous. "Wait... You guys aren't serial killers, are you?"

Jenny dropped her hands down offensively, the grasshopper falling and dashing off. Sam and Dean laughed.

"No. No uh— I think you're safe." Sam chuckled as Matt relaxed, nodding.

"So, Matt... you sure know a lot about insects." Matt raised a brow, shrugging.

"So?"

"Did you hear what happened to Lynda, the realtor?" Jenny asked, tilting her head down slightly. Matt nodded slowly.

"I hear she died this morning."

"Mm, that's right. Spider bites." Dean hummed, shoving his hands in his pockets.

"0Matt... you tried to scare her with a spider." Sam reminded as Matt gave him an offended scoff.

"Wait. You think I had something to do with that?"

"You tell us." Dean shrugged.

"That tarantula was a joke." Matt defended, crossing his arms. "Anyway, that wouldn't explain the bee attack or the gas company guy."

"You know about those?" Sam frowned as Matt nodded in confirmation.

"There is somethin' going on here. I don't know what... but something's happening with the insects. Let me show you something." Matt picked up his backpack, walking deeper into the woods. The Hunters shared curious looks before following the young boy.

"So... If you knew there was something going on with the bugs, why not tell your dad?" Jenny asked as Matt laughed, shaking his head.

"Believe me, I tried. But Larry doesn't listen to me."

"Why not?" Sam asked, Matt turned his head to look at them.

"Mostly? He's too disappointed in his freak son." Sam scoffed, sucking in a breath.

"I hear you." Dean gave Sam a confused look.

"You do?" Sam turned to Dean, giving him an obvious look. Jenny shot Dean a mild glare, to which he hadn't noticed.

Sam cleared his throat again. "How old are you, Matt?"

"Sixteen." Jenny sighed quietly, a smile on her face.

"I remember being sixteen. Jesus Christ that was a decade ago—" Jenny's eyes widened at the realization, shaking her head. "Shit."

"Well, just wait. In two years, something great is going to happen." Sam sighed as Matt frowned walking backwards to face them.

"What?"

"College. You can get out of the house and away from your old man." Jenny and Dean gave Sam a bothered look, to which he ignored again.

"What kind of advice is that? Kid should stick with his family." Dean argued as Sam shot him a glare.

"Well he's right. It's better than being alone." Jenny grumbled, Dean turning to look at her. Sam sighed, looking back at Matt.

"How much further, Matt?" Sam asked as Matt gestured ahead.

"Almost there." They entered a large clearing, the sounds of hundreds of bugs ringing in Jenny's ears.

"Sounds like a horror movie." She frowned, looking around.

"I've been keeping track of insect populations. It's, um, part of an AP science class."

"You two are like peas in a pod." Dean joked to Sam, who ignored him.

"What's been happening?" Jenny asked as she glared in the sunlight.

"A lot. I mean, from bees to earthworms, beetles... you name it. It's like they're congregating here."

"Why?" Dean asked as Matt shrugged.

"I don't know."

"What's that?" Sam pointed ahead to a large circle. Curious, the group walked over. Laying in front of them had to be hundreds of worms squirming around.

Without realizing, Jenny stepped on some, causing her to almost fall forward as the ground in front of her collapsed. She waved her arms around, Dean grabbing her and yanking her towards him. She slammed her back into his chest, gasping as she looked down.

"Holy shit." She mumbled, moving away from Dean. He knelt down to look through the hole, grabbing a stick and using it to poke around in the hole.

There was a soft thud and Dean tossed the stick aside. "There's something down there." Without any moment of hesitation, he stuck his hand in the hole, grimacing. Jenny but down on her thumb, hoping that whatever had been eating at everyone recently wouldn't consume Dean's arm.

When he pulled his arm out, he was holding the remains of a human skull, covered in dirt and bugs. Jenny's eyes widened partially, Dean turning to face her.

Jenny carried a box of the bones she and Dean and dug up from the unmarked grave, walking towards a local university. The three had since changed into more formal attire, Jenny's new heels clicking on the pavement, occasionally scraping as she walked awkwardly.

"So, a bunch of skeletal remains in an unmarked grave." Sam sighed, and Jenny stumbled forward. Dean went to catch her again, catching herself and straightened up.

"I hate heels." She whined, clearing her throat. "Okay... are we thinking a haunting, then?" She asked the brothers as Dean shrugged.

"Yeah, maybe. Question is, why bugs? And why now?" Sam questioned as Dean turned to him, smirking in amusement.

"That's two questions." Sam rolled his eyes, ignoring his brother. "Yeah, so with that kid back there... why'd you tell him to just ditch his family like that?" Jenny sighed quietly as she knew where the conversation was heading, rolling her shoulders back.

"Just, uh... I know what the kid's goin' through."

"How 'bout tellin' him to respect his old man, how's that for advice?" Dean argued as Sam raised his hands in defense.

"Dean, come on..." The three stopped walking, Jenny turning to face the two brothers with a displeased look. "This isn't about his old man. You think I didn't respect Dad. That's what this is about."

"Guys can we not—"

"Just forget it, all right?" Dean snapped, cutting Jenny off as he looked at his brother. "Sorry I brought it up."

"I respected him. But no matter what I did, it was never good enough." Sam continued on as Jenny rolled her eyes in annoyance, tapping her foot.

"So what are you saying? That Dad was disappointed in you?"

"Was? Is. Always has been." Jenny frowned at Sam, scoffing quietly. "What, Jenny?"

She shrugged, shaking her head. "You can't keep going around acting like your daddy hated your guts for wanting a normal life, Sam." Dean turned around to face her, frowning. "Oh, but who am I to voice what I think about a man that abandoned the three of us?"

"He didn't abandon us, Jen." Dean glared as Jenny hummed, sucking in a breath.

"Really? Because he kind of did. Isn't answering your calls, texts." Dean's frown hardened, Sam frowning in confusion at her words. "I mean, the last thing we had of him was that note I shoved down the drain."

"Note?" Sam asked as Dean turned to him.

"John had a note for me when he left."

"And you didn't bother to tell me about it?" Sam argued as Jenny shrugged.

"It was for me only. Though now... I guess you two probably want to know what it said."

"I've been wanting to know since you got the damn thing." Dean argued as the girl nodded.

"Well, since you're so curious... It was about you, Dean." Dean's expression softened into confusion.

"What?"

"John wanted me to promise that I'd watch over you. Both of you, if Sam was dragged back into this mess. Low and behold... I haven't been doing a real good job." She smiled sarcastically, and Sam frowned.

"Jen, you've been sacrificing yourself on every case since we started looking for him. Hell, you almost drowned twice in the matter of a day." Dean scoffed as Jenny looked down at the box. "You've been doing stupid shit to make sure we weren't the ones doing it."

"Dean's right, Jenny. If it weren't for you, I'm sure one of us would be locked up by now." Jenny looked up at the two of them, a solemn smile on her face.

"I'm just tired of you guys fighting. And not just the verbal fights between you two. I mean this kind of fighting." She raised the box up partially. "Can you guys promise me something?"

"Of course." Sam nodded.

"Any thing." Dean replied. Jenny sighed quietly, squinting as the sun beamed into her face.

"When this is all over.. And we find John... Can we at least try and live a normal life?" Jenny have them a look that truly said it all.

She was done hunting. It was tiring her out. The running, getting kidnapped. The scars it left in her body. Losing people she tried to save. It was slowly killing her.

Dean gave her a defeated look. Sam would jump at the opportunity to give this life up and go back to college. But Dean had never known anything else. He had never had his own bed, his own place to call home.

Well... Except for her. Dean stared into Jenny's eyes as he could only imagine the life he feared. A normal life. Something outside of hunting.

Could he really do that? Give up helping people? Sure, he could get a job that still helps people. Become an actual cop, or a firefighter, if he wanted. But truly saving people from the real dangers of the world. Would he be willing to promise that to a girl?

The truth? He was willing to do anything for Jenny. And as Sam nodded his promise...

So did Dean.
