Chapter Six

Jenny's mind couldn't erase the claw marks she had seen on Mr. Shaw's neck. After listening to the story of how his parents had been killed, something clicked inside her mind that the monster was obviously human.

"I think I have a small idea about what we're hunting... But i can't remember that it's name for the life of me." Her words were partially slurred as Dean handed her a water bottle, to which she drank slowly.

"It's fine, Jen. We'll figure it out. For now, I need sleep if we're going back out there tomorrow." Dean said as he clapped his hands together. "You can take the bed tonight, Jen."

"Nah 's fine. Couch looks comfy." Jenny stood up with a slight wobble, frowning. "I don't remember feeling this drunk."

"Well it does sink in after a while. And you had more shots when Dean wasn't looking." Dean's eyes widened as he turned to Jenny, who smiled innocently.

"Oh, you go three weeks without actual alcohol." Jenny waved him off before collapsing onto the bed, knocked out cold.

Sam sighed, looking at her as Dean picked her up, setting her the right way. "She's changed." Sam commented with a soft chuckle as Dean nodded.

"Yeah. She hasn't been herself for the last few months." Dean started, taking one of the blankets from the couch and throwing it over Jenny.

"What do you mean?" Sam frowned in confusion as Dean shook his head.

"Not my place to tell." Dean sat down next to Jenny, staring down at her with a solemn look. Dean looked over at his brother, who watched him suspiciously. "What?"

Sam shrugged, pressing his lips together in a fine line. "Nothing. Just... Haven't seen you like this before." Dean raised a brow at Sam, who sighed and went back to his work without another word.

Jenny's head throbbed as she walked into the woods with Sam, Dean, Haley, Ben and Roy leading them. Sam was carrying a duffel bag of weapons, looking around as if waiting for something to attack them.

"So, Roy. You said you did a little hunting? What kind of furry critters do you hunt?" Dean asked as Roy shrugged, watching his surroundings carefully.

"Mostly buck, sometimes bear." Roy answered as Dean started walking past him.

"Tell me, uh, Bambi or Yogi ever hunt you back?" Dean gave Roy a snarky smile, who grabbed him, forcing him to stop. "Whatcha doing, Roy?"

The older man grabbed a stick, poking it into the ground as a bear trap sprung up, snapping the stick like a twig. Jenny's eyes widened at how close Dean's foot was the the trap, realizing that if hale had taken another step, the stick would have been his leg.

"You should watch where you're stepping. Ranger."

After a few more steps of silence, Haley moved past Sam and Jenny, walking up to Dean.

"You didn't pack any provisions. You guys are carrying a duffel bag. You're not rangers." Jenny paused, looking at Haley, then at Dean, watching as the girl grabbed him. "So who the hell are you?"

Sam, Jenny and Dean all looked at one another, Dean indicating for the two to keep walking, Ben passing them by in the process. Sam and Jenny started walking together, though now the girl's senses were higher than before.

"I'm Dean. That's my brother Sam, and my partner Jennifer."

"Partner?" Haley asked from the distance, Jenny turning back to see the girl staring at her.

"Hunting partner. We aren't... Together."

"Is she with Sa—"

"No." There was a moment of silence. "We're looking for Sam and I's father. He might be here, we don't know. I just figured that you and me, we're in the same boat."

Their voices faded as Sam and Jenny got further away, the two still looking around. "Any idea what we're hunting yet?" Sam asked as Jenny shook her head.

"As far as I'm concerned, a really smart bear." She answered with a cheeky smirk as Sam chuckled, shaking his head.

After another few hours, Roy was leading the way again. Dean walked closely behind Jenny, Ben and Haley next to one another as Sam stayed in the back.

"This is it. Black water Ridge." Roy said as the three in the back shared a single look.

"What are the coordinates?" Sam asked as Roy pulled out a GPS.

"Thirty-five and minus one-eleven."

"I don't hear anything." Jenny looked at the Winchester brothers, who nodded in agreement.

"Not even crickets."

"I'm going to take a look around." Roy called out to the five, Sam walking over.

"You shouldn't go alone."

"T hat's sweet. Don't worry about me." Roy waved his gun in the air before walking on his own, Dean and Jenny walking forward to take the lead with Sam.

"All right, everybody stays together. Let's go."

Another hour passed, and now the group was staring at the bloody campsite of Haley's brother.

"Tommy?" Haley cried out, running through the campsite. "Tommy!"

"Shh." Sam pressed a finger to his lips towards Haley, who ignored him and continued to call out for her brother.

"Tommy!" She yelled again, this time Jenny grabbed the girl.

"Shh-hh-hh!" Jenny pressed her finger to her lips as Haley glared at her.

"Why?" She asked as if it was the smartest question.

"Something might still be out there." Sam whispered, looking around.

"Sam! Jenny!" Dean called out to the two, who went over to the oldest Winchester. The three crouched down by a drag trail, which abruptly stopped.

"The bodies were dragged from the campsite. But here, the tracks just vanish." Dean gestured to the obvious as Jenny's eyes widened, Dean and Sam standing up.

"I'll tell you what, that's no skinwalker or black dog." Dean said as Sam noticed Jenny hadn't moved.

"Jenny?" Sam frowned down at the girl, who stayed still.

"Hey. Jen." Dean shook her and she shot up quickly.

"I know what it is." She started, but before Dean or Sam could ask what she meant, someone screamed in the distance.

"Help! Help!" Five of the six members ran towards who was yelling, Jenny staying in her spot, and Dean spun around in confusion.

"Jenny come on!" Jenny hesitated for a moment before sighing and following the group.

After a few minutes of realizing that there wasn't a person who needed help, they all ran back to the campsite.

"Our packs!" Haley gasped, realizing that everything was missing.

"Shit." Jenny muttered, realizing that her vague idea of what the monster was was right.

"It's a Wendigo." Jenny spoke first, Dean frowning.

"What? That's impossible. Wendigos are in the Minnesota woods or, or northern Michigan. I've never even heard of one this far west."

"I mean, think about it. Wendigos can mimick a person and the claw marks? Shaw said the thing opened the door on its own."

"We need to get these people to safety. It's getting dark." Sam said before walking back over to the camp, Dean pulling out his pistol in disappointment.

"Well. This is fucking useless." He frowned as Jenny nodded.

"We need a flamethrower... Or flare guns."

While everyone was starting a fire in the campsite, Dean had finished drawing an Anasazi symbol in the dirt, Jenny staring out into the dark woods, her arms crossed.

"Okay, one more time. That's—" Before Haley could finish asking, Dean sighed, interrupting her.

"Anasazi symbol. It's for protection. The wendigo can't cross over them." He explained as Roy chuckled, laughing at the idea that the three strangers were crazy. "No one likes a skeptic, Roy." Dean continued, and Roy rolled his eyes.

Jenny turned to look at Sam, who was standing a few feet from her on the edge of the campsite. She furrowed her brows at his solemn expression, rustling coming from behind her.

Dean was now standing next to her, looking over at Sam. "You doing alright?" He asked as she sucked in a breath, nodding.

"I shouldn't be the one you're asking." She gestured to Sam, who looked at them for a moment before returning his gaze to the woods. Dean sighed, walking towards his brother as Jenny walked over to Haley and Ben.

"How are you guys holding up?" She asked, sitting next to the girl, who shook her head.

"I don't want to think the worst. But it's hard, y'know? Knowing there's something out there that probably ki—"

"Hey, now." Jenny placed her hand over Haley's, looking at the girl with a reassuring smile. "We'll find your brother, okay? I promise." Haley hesitated for a moment before nodding, and Jenny turned to Ben. "What about you?"

"How you do it?" Ben asked as Jenny frowned in confusion, tilting her head.

"Do what?"

"Pretend like everything's okay. You're so calm about all of this, it's like— like it doesn't bother you." Jenny stared at Ben for a moment before she shrugged.

"It doesn't. Trust me, when you've gone through what I have— What the three of us have... You get used to the fear. You learn to hide it, mask it with a difficult emotion."

"What emotion do you hide it with..?" Haley asked as Jenny looked at the fire, humming.

"Any emotion but fear. Anger, joy, disgust. When you're in our line of work... You can't be afraid. The things we hunt.." Jenny shook her head. "Fear can kill you."

A twig snapped, Jenny standing up quickly as she grabbed her gun, aiming it at where the sound had come from. She knew it wouldn't help kill the wendigo, but it would slow it down, even if it was just a little bit.

"Help! Help me please!"

"He's trying to draw us out. Just stay cool, stay put." Dean ordered as he gestured for Jenny to stand next to him and Sam, the three now fully alert and ready for whatever came at them.

"Any if you got a flamethrower?" Jenny joked as Roy turned to her and stared at her like she was a mad woman.

"Inside the magic circle?" Roy asked as Dean nodded quickly.

"Help me!" The wendigo continued to scream, Jenny looking over at the two Winchesters, who were scanning the woods.

"That ain't no grizzly." Roy whispered as Jenny turned to him.

"Were you expecting Yogi?" She asked as Dean nudged her in the side, to which she huffed, fixing her posture.

Rustling echoed around the campsite as Haley shrieked in fear, and Roy shot his gun.

"I got it!" Roy yelled before running out of the circle, Jenny's heart dropping as her eyes widened.

"Roy no!" Jenny yelled as she went to go after him, Dean grabbing her by the shoulder and forcing her back into the circle. "Hey!"

"Watch them!" Sam ordered as him and Dean ran after Roy, Jenny furrowing her brows in anger as she watched the brothers run after the old man.

"It's over here! It's in the tree!" Roy yelled from further into the forest. Jenny turned to Haley and Ben, Haley gripping a stick on fire.

Another snap echoed, followed by Dean's voice. "Roy!" Jenny's eyes widened as she realized that it wasn't a stick that had snapped.

Haley gasped in horror, knowing what had happened to Roy. The man was dead.
