Chapter Fifty-Six

Jenny was splayed out in the back of the impala, doing her usual by playing Tetris. Peace Of Mind was playing on the radio, humming to it quietly as Sam and Dean argued in the front.

"You're a real smart ass you know that?.... Don't worry I'm sure there's something in Fitchburg worth killing.

"Yeah? What makes you so sure?" Sam looked at his brother with a glare.

"Cause I'm the oldest, which means I'm always right." Dean argued with a dumb grin.

"No it doesn't."

"It totally does."

"You guys are making me mess up my game." Jenny spoke from the back.

"It's Tetris." The brothers said in unison as the failed noise echoed in the car.

"See?! I almost beat my highest score!" She flailed her phone in Sam's face and he whacked it away. Jenny huffed, laying back down with an annoyed thump.

Dean walked across the road back to Sam and Jenny, holding a drink carrier with three coffee's. He handed one to Jenny then to Sam, tossing the carrier in the trash. "Well...the waitress thinks the local freemasons are up to something sneaky but other than that no one's heard about anything freaky going on.

"Dean you got the time?" Sam asked. Dean shook his wrist, looking down at his watch

"Ten after Four. Why?"

Jenny pointed to the playground across from them, squinting in the sunlight. Only one little girl was playing on it. Other than that, it was a dead zone.

"School's out isn't it?" Dean frowned, Sam and Jenny nodding in answer

"Yeah. So where is everybody? This place should be crawling with kids right now." The three shrugged, all approaching a woman sitting at the park bench, reading a magazine.

"Sure is quiet out here." Dean spoke up, the woman turning to them.

"Yeah, it's a shame." She hummed, looking over to her daughter.

"Why's that?" Jenny asked.

"You know, kids getting sick, it's a terrible thing." The mother let out a small sigh, shaking her head

"How many?"

"Just five or six but serious, hospital serious. A lot of parents are getting pretty anxious. They think it's catching." The three Hunter's have each other a look, all slowly sipping their coffee.

Jenny hissed in pain as she stumbled, failing to walk properly as she wore heels. "Again, with the heels. This is ridiculous." She grumbled, fixing her suit jacket.

"Dean, I am not using this ID!" Sam whisper yelled as Dean frowned.

"Why?"

"Because it says bikini inspector on it!" Dean grinned, waving a hand.

"Don't worry she won't look that close all right? Hell, she won't even ask to see it. It's all about confidence Sammy." Jenny stumbled again. "If you don't want to wear heels why did you buy them?"

"I didn't! You did!" She slapped Dean's arm and he guided her away, Sam walking up to the receptionist.

After a moment, Dean snickered as he watched Sam glare at him, showing the woman behind the desk his ID. Another moment, and he was walking over to them. "See? I told you it would work."

Sam gave Dean a bitch face, rolling his eyes. "Follow me. It's upstairs."

"Thank you for seeing us, Doctor Hydecker." Jenny shook the doctors hand, who nodded.

"Well I'm glad you guys are here. I was just about to call CDC myself. How'd you find out anyways?

"Oh some GP, I forget his name, he called Atlanta and, uh, he must've beat you to the punch." Dean chuckled, the doctor nodding.

"So you say you got six cases so far?"

"Yeah, over the last five weeks. At first we thought it was garden variety bacterial pneumonia. Not that newsworthy. But now..." Hydecker trailed off, shaking his head.

"Now..?" Jenny raised a brow, looking down the hall

"The kids aren't responding to antibiotics. Their white cell counts keep going down. Their immune systems just aren't doing their job. It's like their bodies are ... wearing out." Jenny's expression changed at the thought of the children, looking over at Dean. A nurse walked up to them.

"Excuse me, Dr Hyecker." The nurse handed him a clipboard and a pen, watching him sign his name in sloppy handwriting.

"You ever see anything like this before?" Jenny asked, Hydecker shaking his head as he continued to read the paper.

"Never this severe."

"And the way it spreads...that's a new one for me." The nurse added in.

"How so?" Jenny tilted her head as the nurse shrugged, gesturing to the hallway behind her.

"It works its way through families. But only the children, one sibling after another."

"You mind if we interview a few of the kids?" Dean asked.

"They're not conscious." The nurse spoke in a mellow, sad tone, sighing quietly.

"None of them?" Sam raised his brows as the nurse shook her head.

"Can we, uh, can we talk to the parents?" Dean asked, glancing between the nurse and doctor.

"Well, if you think it'll help." The doctor smiled softly, shrugging.

"Yeah. Who was your most recent admission?" Jenny asked as Dr. Hydecker guided them down the hall to a waiting room, gesturing to a man.

The three thanked the doctor before walking over to the man. "Hello, sir." Jenny smiled warmly, the man looking up from his book. "We're with the CDC. These are my colleagues, Doctor Caplin and Lawrence. I'm Doctor Adams. We just wanted to ask you a few questions about your kids, if that's alright."

The man looked between the three before sighing, gesturing to the seats in front of him. None of the Hunters sat down. "Thank you. First questions, what are your kids names?"

"Mary. And Bethany. Mary is the oldest." The man answered, sitting back. "She got sick first."

"Okay. And when did they first get symptoms?" Sam asked, stuffing his hands in his pockets.

"A few days ago. Mary said she wasn't feeling well and then... I should get back to my girls."

"We understand that, and we really appreciate you talking to us. Now you say Mary is the oldest?" Sam continued, the man nodding.

"Thirteen."

"Ok. And you said she came down with it first, right? And then—?"

"Bethany, the next night." He interrupted Jenny, holding his hands together.

"Within 24 hours?" Sam frowned.

"I guess. Look, I, uh, I already went through all this with the doctor."

"Just a few more questions if you don't mind." Dean spoke up. "How do you think they caught pneumonia? Were they out in the cold, anything like that?"

"No. We think it was an open window."

"Both times?" Jenny frowned, looking between Sam and Dean

"The first time, I, I don't really remember but the second time for sure. And I know I closed it before I put Bethany to bed."

"Do you think that she may have opened it?" Jenny asked, and the man shrugged.

"It's a second story window with a ledge. No one else could've." Another look between the three Hunters.

"We appreciate your time. Thank you." Jenny smiled, joking Sam and Dean as they walked away down another corridor.

"You know, maybe there isn't anything supernatural here. Maybe it's just pneumonia." Sam suggested as Jenny shook her head.

"Nah, you know this routine, Sam. It's never anything normal when we're around." She squinted slightly as the bright lights blinded her for a moment. "Jesus do they have to be so white?"

"I don't know man, look, Dad sent us down down here for a reason. I think we might be barking up the right tree." Dean added, the three rounding a corner before Sam stopped them.

"I'll tell you one thing. That guy we just talked to? I'm betting it'll be a while before he goes home."

Sam looked around the neighborhood as Jenny picked at the front door to the man's home, hearing a click before opening it slowly. "Housekeeping?" She whispered, looking back at Sam and Dean. She gestured for them to follow her inside.

Jenny flicked on her flashlight, looking around the living room. "Oh, sweet! I've always wanted one of these." Jenny walked over to a hand chair, sitting down in it. She slid down, frowning. "It's not as comfy as I hoped it would be."

"Jenny, really?" Sam frowned as she grumbled, standing up. "You got the EMF?" He turned to his brother, who nodded.

The three walked up the stairs, walking into what they assumed was Bethany's bedroom. Dean turned in the EMF, which buzzed, but didn't read any spirits out. "I got nothing."

"And I don't feel deathly ill, so I think we aren't dealing with a gh— oh boy." Jenny interrupted herself, looking at the handprint in the windowsill. "Guys look at this."

Sam and Dean walked over to Jenny, all staring down at the rotted wood. "You ever see anything like that?" Sam frowned, looking to Jenny.

"I've seen pictures. A Shtriga. But I've never seen one before." She looked over at Dean, frowning. "Dean?"

He turned to Jenny, looking a little sick. "I know why Dad sent us here. He's fought this thing before... And wants us to finish the job."

✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧

The three got out of the Impala, slowly walking up to the motel's office. Sam still having a confused frown on his face. "So.. What the hell is a Shtriga?" He asked, turning to Jenny and Dean in hopes they knew.

"It's kinda like a witch... I don't know much about them." Dean answered bluntly, Jenny sitting up in her chair.

"It's a vampiric witch." She answered, scribbling something down in her own journal. "They're mainly in Albanian mythology. At night, they go into children's bedrooms and feed on their essence." Sam's eyes widened at the newfound information. "I read a lot."

"Well, I've never heard of it. And it's not in Dad's journal." Sam waved his fathers journal in the air, dropping it on the table.

"Dad hunted one in Fort Douglas, Wisconsin, about 16, 17 years ago. You were there. You don't remember?" Dean frowned, tilting his head as his brother shook his. "And I guess he caught wind of the things in Fitzburg now and kicked us the coordinates."

"So wait, this..." Sam waved his hand around as he tried to remember the monsters name.

"Shtriga." Dean and Jenny chimed in, Sam nodding.

"Right. You think it's the same one Dad hunted before?" Dean shrugged.

"Yeah, maybe."

"But if Dad went after it... why is it still breathing air?"

"Cause it got away." Dean answered, looking at his younger brother.

"Got away?"

"Yeah Sammy it happens." Dean griped, starting to look irritated.

"Not very often." Sam mumbled.

"Well I don't know what to tell ya, maybe Dad didn't have his wheaties that morning."

"What else do you remember?" Sam asked as Dean shook his head.

"Nothin'. I was a kid all right?" Dean said defensively, causing Jenny and Sam to look at one another. The three walked up to the front desk, Jenny tapping the bell.

A little boy ran up, looking at the three. "A king or two queens?" He asked suggestively, Jenny raising her brows.

"Two queens?" Dean answered, the boy humming and mumbled something under his breath. "What was that?"

"Nice car!" Jenny clicked her tongue as a woman walked out from a room, walking to the three.

"Hi." She smiled, the three nodding to her. "Checking in?" They nodded again. "Alright." She turned to her son, gesturing behind. "Why don't you get your brother some dinner?"

"I'm helping a guest!" He argued, sighing when his mother gave him a look and walked away. "Two queens." He called back, looking a Dean as he said so.

He let out a fake laugh. "Funny kid."

"Oh, yeah. He thinks so. Will that be cash or credit?"

"You take MasterCard?" Jenny asked, the woman humming in confirmation. "Great." Dean handed the woman his card, watching the boys behind the woman.

The receptionist went to hand back the card to Dean, who seemed to be out of it. "Sir?" He blinked quickly, taking the card.

"Thanks." He mumbled, Jenny giving him an odd look as they walked out.
