She Said No
Dedicated to fairyaverage, and QueenLisaH_, for dealing with me at 1:30 in the morning!!
I know this is really out of character (for her), but just, yeah. I know.
No. She said no.
My brain short-circuited, and I stared at her.
"No?" I repeated, my voice shaking. She shook her head.
"No." Her voice was firm, eyes cold. "When I met you, sure, I was happy for you guys, but I didn't think it would last this long." She sighed. "You must understand, Nico, you're not good for him. I'm sorry, but no."
I nodded. She was telling me exactly what I was afraid of, and knew. He deserved better. I swallowed, rubbing my hands on my jeans.
"Right." I said, my voice coming out as a whisper. I cleared my throat. "OK." I stood up, and walked to the front door. I hesitated with my hand on the handle. "Thank you Ms. Solace." I opened and closed the door before she could say anything else. I shakily walked down the steps, and then the front walk, my mind in a daze.
No. She said no.
What am I supposed to do? Do I break it off? Do I ask him? Do I tell him?!
I began to panick, and when I looked around, I realized I'd walked a couple blocks from the house, and there was a bench a couple feet away.
I sat down, knowing my brain was a jumbled mess, and I wouldn't be able to shadow travel. Getting up, I stumbled my way into an alley, and called Mrs. O'Leary. She appeared with a bark, and I gave her a watery smile.
No. She said no.
"Hey girl." I mumbled, petting her head. She nudged me, whining, and I shrugged. "Mind giving me a ride?" I hoisted myself up, and told her to go back to the apartment.
We appeared in a rush, and there was a yelp.
"Nico?" My name was muffled, and I slid down from Mrs. O'Leary.
"Sorry." I said, trying to sound normal.
No. She said no.
Mrs. O'Leary shrunk to a mastiff size, and I was able to see Will, who had been stuck under the mass of fur on the couch. He got up, and walked over to me.
"Hey. Where'd you go?"
No. She said no.
"I um," What do I say? I bit my lip as my eyes filled with tears.
"Nico?!" Will said alarmed, stepping forwards, and wrapping me in a hug before I could push him away.
No. She said no.
"Nico, what's going on?"
I gripped his shirt, and shoved my face into his neck. "She said no Will."
"What? Who said no to what?"
I sobbed, wrapping one arm around his neck, the other still gripping his shirt. Will wrapping his arms tighter around me, and lead me to the couch. He sat, and I straddled him, still crying.
"OK, shhh, Nico, it's OK." He gently rubbed circled on my back, his other arm still around my waist. "Nico, tell me what's going on. Please."
I lifted my head, sniffling. He handed me a kleenex, and I wiped my nose. Mrs. O'Leary came over, trying to see what was wrong, like normal a dog would. I couldn't help but laugh as she nudged me with her flat cold nose.
"Sorry." I mumbled, but Will only shook his head.
"Just, tell me."
"I, I," I got up, and ran to the bedroom.
"Nico!" Will said, getting up.
"Stay there."
He sat back down, and I ran to the closet. I bent over, and rummaged through some pockets, before I found what I was looking for. I had hid it lower, knowing it would have been found if it was on a higher shelf. Stupid tall boyfriends.
I walked back to the living room, hiding the box. I stood in front of Will, looking down at him. Shakily, I held out the velvet box. Will's breath caught, and he looked up at me. I held the box out to him, and he took it, eyes filling with tears.
"Nico,"
I held up a hand. "Will, we've been dating for a little over five years now, and I love you with everything I have, and more. I'd do anything for you! I'd die for you, but that's insignificant for what I'd do for you. I'd live for you. I was planning on doing this tonight," I took a deep breath, closing my eyes. "When we went on our date. But, that was ruined today. I shouldn't even be doing this. I shouldn't be giving this to you. I'm supposed to break both of our hearts, and stop this. But I can't, I can't because I need you. Without you, I'm nothing. I know that seems selfish, but it's true. You are the light of my life." I looked at Will, getting on one knee. "So, will you, William Solace, marry me?"
I was thrown to the ground, my head being caught by a hand, and then there were lips on mine. I kissed back, relief flooding through me. Will pulled away, both of us laughing breathlessly. We sat up, and Will and I both had tears running down our faces.
"Yes! I, ohmygods, yes!"
I laughed opening the box, and sliding the ring onto him. I kissed Will again, but pulled away when the guilt got to me. What am I doing? I shouldn't have done that. I should not have done that.
"Nico? You, you're not regretting asking me, are you?"
I shook my head. I had to tell him.
"She, she said no."
Will blinked in confusion, before his face cleared, but only slightly. "Oh. Yeah, no. Still confused."
I let out a quiet laugh, leaning my head on his collarbone. He pulled me closer, the two of us still on the floor, but now I was sitting in between his legs, as he rested against the couch. Mrs. O'Leary flopped down next to us, resting her slobbery mouth on Will's leg. I laughed at the look on Will's face, kissing his cheek.
"Nico, who said no?"
I lost all the humor, swallowing. "Your mom."
Will was quiet, as he drew random designed on my hp, where my shirt had lifted.
"I, I went to ask. Because that's what we did, when I was a kid, you know, the 'classic ask the father'." I shrugged. "It's just what we did; ask the parent, usually the father, but, you know, in our situation, I asked her." I took a deep breath. "She, she said that I didn't deserve you, which is true,"
I stopped Will's protest by covering his mouth.
"She said that she didn't think our relationship would have lasted this long, and she was only putting up with it. She doesn't want us together Will." I moved my hand from his mouth, sliding it down to cup his neck. "I shouldn't have asked you. But I didn't know what to do! What are you supposed to do when you're told no?"
Will shrugged, running the hand that wasn't on my hip through my hair. He was quiet, and I looked at him. His face was stony.
"Will? You knew, didn't you. That she didn't approve?"
Will sighed, finally looking at me, his face full of sadness. "Yeah. When she met you, she pulled me aside, and said that she was happy for me, but that you weren't the right person to be with." Will cupped my jaw, and looked at me with such an intensity, I couldn't break eye contact. "But I disagree with her Nico. You're the person I want to spend my life with. Forever."
He leaned down and kissed me with a passion I've never experienced. I kissed back, wrapping my arms around his neck, and pulling him closer. We were interrupted by a bark, and I looked at Mrs. O'Leary, who was standing and staring at us, her stump of a tail waving around.
I laughed, reaching out to her, and scratching her ear. She lay down again, her back pressed against the length of Will's leg, her head resting against his ankle.
I lay my head on his shoulder, and closed my eyes. "I love you."
Will hummed, holding me tighter. "I love you too."
Yes. He said yes.
So, this is based off of the song Why You Gotta Be So Rude, because I heard it in a store yesterday/a couple days ago, and the idea about asking a parent for their child's hand in marriage, and being turned down was inspiring, so I was like; let's do it!
