Just Drive (part 2)

I had a bunch of requests for a part two, so here it is!

Nico's POV

At one he drove up to the curb just like he had done the previous night but this time he got out with me, grabbing a thin sweatshirt from the back of his seat to protect himself from the chilly New York air. "You still want to go, right?" He asked, and I could detect a small bit of fear in his voice, like he was scared I would bail on him. "I feel like I pressured you into this." I refrained from rolling my eyes. Will seemed cool, and I didn't want to scare him away with my rudeness before we got a real chance to talk.

"Of course not. So, where are we going? You said you knew a place." Will jumped a fraction of an inch, as if he had been off thinking about other things.

"Yeah, follow me. It's close."

"Should we drive?" Will shook his head, and pointed a set of keys at the taxi and pressing a button. It gave a beep beep noise, the taillights flashed bright red and the car was silent.

"I usually just park it here, since I live so close. Since it's a taxi, it get's free parking. Besides, you said you wanted to get the experience of an average New Yorker. First part of being an average New Yorker is walking everywhere."

"Fair enough," I chuckled. Will waved me on, and we crossed the street, joining the bustling sidewalk on the other side.

I couldn't ever remember being around so many people at once. Usually we drove everywhere, and we didn't have to deal with the throngs of people walking around the city. The few times I had walked places it had been in the daytime. Clearly, the city was more active at night. Will was walking quickly, his hands shoved in his pockets, a single earbud dangling out of the back pocket of his pants. He blended right in but I stuck out like a sore thumb. I could see people giving me strange glances as I struggled to keep up with Will's long strides, like they were wondering what this rich kid was doing wandering the streets of the city at one in the morning. Will glanced behind him, pausing and letting people weave around him as he waited for me to catch up.

"Am I walking too fast?" he asked. I shook my head, trying not to show how out of breath I was. "The people will start to thin out soon," Will promised. "I live in a pretty quiet neighborhood, or at least as quiet as it gets in New York. You can hold my hand until then, if you want." I immediately saw his face flush red. "So you don't fall behind, I mean. I walk pretty fast and getting lost in New York in the middle of the night is everyone's worst nightmare. You only have to if you want to, of course." I studied his face as long as I could without it being weird. His eyes were shifting and the blush was still present. I was sure my face was red, too. I grabbed his hand quickly, as if grabbing it fast enough would make it so that he didn't want to take back his offer. But by the way he was blushing, to me it didn't seem like he wanted to.

"We'll be there in five minutes," he promised. We kept walking, Will still holding my much smaller hand. I couldn't explain why, but it made me happy.

We arrived at the place Will had been describing, a cute pizza parlor with a flickering neon sign in the window and a single employee wiping down the glass separating the pizza from the rest of the store. When Will walked in the employee's face lit up and he gave an excited wave as Will led me up to the impressive display of twenty kinds of pizzas, ranging from your average cheese to a flaming hot cheeto pizza. "How often do you come here?" I asked after seeing the employee's enthusiastic greeting.

"Most days after work," Will responded. "Nico, this is Tony. Tony, this is my friend Nico." Tony gave me a strong handshake, and I could feel his eyes scrutinizing every inch of me, trying to find out everything that he possibly could just by looking.

"Nice to meet you, Nico," Tony said, stretching out his hand to give me a firm handshake. What can I get for the two of you?"

"I'll have a cheese," Will said. "Nico, I'd advise getting the cheese. It's the best cheese pizza in the city."

"You flatter me," Tony smirked.

"I'll have the cheese," I said. Tony put two pieces of greasy, cheesy slices on two separate plates, handing them over the counter. Will reached into his pocket, pulling out a handful of quarters and sliding them over to Tony. "I can pay for this, if you want," I said. My hand was poised to reach into my pocket but Will put his hand on my arm.

"Second rule of being an average New Yorker- you pay for everything with change. It was like that when I was in high school, and it's still like that today. Besides, you gave me three hundred dollars for a cab ride yesterday. I can pay three bucks for pizza." He grabbed our plates and brought them over to a small table near the door. "This is my favorite table," he explained. "Whenever I come here, I sit here. It's nice, looking out onto the street and watching all the people walk past."

I sat down, taking a huge bite of the pizza. It was greasy and floppy, cheese hanging off every side. It was nothing like my family would usually eat. Maybe that was why I liked it so much.

"So, time to hold up your end of the bargain," Will said, slurping in a string of hot cheese. "What's it like being rich?" I shrugged.

"We don't get food like this, ever. We get things like caviar and a bunch of other stuff that I can't even pronounce."

"There are pros, though, right?"

"Yeah." I nodded thoughtfully. "I can donate to whatever charity I want, as much as I want. The nice clothes are a plus, too." Will chuckled and I smiled, oddly happy that he liked a stupid joke I made.

We kept talking, and I found myself liking Will more and more. He was funny, charming, and kind. "What do you want to be when you're older?" I asked. drawing circles with extra strings of cheese on my plate. Half empty sodas sat in front of us.

"A doctor," he responded. "I'm in a really good med program right now, so hopefully that will help me. It would be really cool to be one of those doctors without borders, you know? I could bring medicine to people who don't have any?" I was entranced, both by his big dreams and his big blue eyes, which were so animated when he spoke. "What about you?"

"I'm not quite sure yet," I shrugged. "My dad's always wanted me to take over his business, but I don't really want to. There are already plenty of employees who would love to take over the company, and it should go to one of them. For now, I'm kind of just drifting."

"Anything in mind?"

"Teaching, maybe." I responded. "It would be nice to help kids find their way in life."

"We could go to other countries together," Will laughed. "I'll bring medicine, and you can bring learning. We'll be thee best team there ever was." He yawned, badly concealing it behind his hand, and I immediately felt a stab of guilt.

"Do you want to go back to your house? It's almost three, you must be tired." Will looked guilty, but he nodded.

"I'm not cutting this too short, am I?"

"A few hours ago we were in a taxi together for three hours, I think we can call it quits at three in the morning." I grabbed our plates, tossing them into the trash. "You live close to here, right?" Will nodded. "I'll walk you home."

"Is it too much trouble?" Will asked, holding back another yawn. He was cute when he was sleepy. Of course, he was cute all the other times, too.

"No, I can just have someone pick me up. We have a night chauffeur for a reason, you know." Will laughed as he pushed open the door, pointing me in the direction of his house.

"Okay, you're going to have to show me your house sometime. Do you have water slides?"

"I wish. My dad isn't nearly that cool. I'd love to hang out again, though. I can plan it, if you want. You showed me your life, so I'll show you mine, although mine isn't nearly as cool as your's."

"I'd love to," Will grinned as we paused at the stoop of his apartment building. "It's a date." We stood there, underneath the stars with nothing but the light breeze playing with the ends of our hair and a dim streetlight illuminating the small circle where we stood. I wasn't sure whether I should kiss him or not, seeing as it was only our first official night as friends, and I wasn't even sure if he liked me. But suddenly, I knew. A tiny voice in the back of my head told me what to do and so I stood up on my tiptoes, giving Will the tiniest peck on the cheek. He seemed stunned, but a smile began to creep onto his face.

"See you soon!" I called as I began to jog down the street to where my chauffeur was waiting for me. He gave me a small, dorky wave goodbye as I left his world and shifted back into mine.

Hi guys! I hope you liked this one!
