I'll Be Your Server(part three)
So I had a request for a part three of I'll Be Your Server and since I love this universe (and you guys) I decided to write it. But first here's a quick backstory, since this one happens six months after part two. Will and Nico are still happily together, and they're just going back to school, Nico transferring to NYU to be closer to Will. His parent's still don't know.
Nico's POV
"When are you going to tell them?" I looked up from my coffee to face my boyfriend. We were in the small coffee shop again, the location of the first date that had gone so well we had decided to give it another try and another, and another until, before we knew it, I had been Will's steady boyfriend for six months.
"I don't know," I sighed, flitting my eyes away from his blue ones. "They still don't even know I'm gay. If I told them I was dating you than I would be coming out to them and then telling them I have a boyfriend at the same time. The shock honestly might kill them." Will rolled his eyes.
"Come on, Neeks, I'm sure they aren't that bad." I raised my eyebrow.
"Will, the only time you've ever met them was when you waited on my family six months ago. You got their good side. I can promise you that at home, they're ten times worse." Will swiveled around in his chair to face Laurie, who was wiping down the counter with a wet rag. Other than the three of us, the cafe was completely empty as it usually was this time of day.
"Come on, Laurie, back me up," he begged. "Nico should tell his parents about us, right?"
"No, Nico should not tell his parents about his relationship," I insisted. "Come on, Laurie. What would you do in my position?"
"Laurie thinks it't weird when Nico talks in the third person," Laurie responded, giving neither of us a clear answer. Will and I both groaned.
"Don't you have any advice?" Will pleaded. "You've been watching our relationship grow for six months. Surely, you must have something to say about this."
"Well," she began, leaning her elbows on the squeaky clean counter top. "I think it depends where you are in your relationship. Obviously this is a huge step for Nico, coming out to his parents and telling them he's had a secret boyfriend for six months. But if this is going to be a long-term relationship, than I'd recommend telling your parents, Nico. You can't hide your relationship, or your sexuality, forever." She picked up the washcloth again, buffing out the marks left by her elbows. She seemed to be done solving our relationship problems.
"Well, where do you want us to go?" Will asked, taking a sip of his mocha latte, our favorite drink.
What?" I blinked, taken aback by the sudden question. He set down his mug, a small ring of coffee around his lip. It would have been funny had it not been for the situation. I loved Will but we had only been together for six months. Suddenly, six months felt like nothing.
"How serious are we?" Will asked. He seemed unshaken by the heat that had seemingly flooded the previously cool cafe.
"I- I don't know," I stuttered. Will sighed.
"I'm sorry I put you on the spot like this. It's just that I've never felt what I feel for you with anyone else. I just want to know where we stand in our relationship but if you want to keep going the way we have been, I'll be completely fine with that."
"But that's not what I want." I shook my head, clearing away the cobwebs and the dust that had collected in my brain, trying to clear a space for a rational thought. "I love you, Will. What we have is casual, but I don't feel casual. The signs have been there, how I really feel about you. When I transferred schools to be with you, when my parents almost caught us in my room. I don't want this to be casual, Will. I want a serious relationship." I took a deep breath. "And to do that, I need to tell my parents that I'm gay, and that I'm dating you. If I'm going to be happy, I need them to know. They won't be happy about it, and they definitely won't accept it, but if we're both going to be happy, they need to know the truth about my life." I glanced at Laurie, who had been shamelessly eavesdropping my entire speech. "So? Do you think I made the right decision?" Laurie smiled.
"I wasn't sure when, but I knew you would eventually," she grinned.
"So," Will said. He was trying to contain his joy but a wide smile was splitting his face, making his face shine like the sun. "When are you going to tell them?"
"I'm having dinner with them tonight," I decided. "I'd like you to be there, if you can. i can tell them that you're there to work on a project. And during dinner, I'll tell them. Hazel already knows about everything, she'll back me up. So, can you come?"
"Of course," Will assured me. "There's no way I'd make you do that alone."
"Good luck," Laurie said. "I hope it goes well."
"Thanks," I sighed, resting my head in my hands. "I'll need all the luck I can get."
Will's POV
I glanced over at Nico as he mentally prepared himself to ring the doorbell to his parent's house as the dying beams of the sun cast him in shadows. His eyes were closed, head tilted down to the ground. He let out a shaky breath, wiggling his fingers a little bit, but making no move to ring the doorbell, the button that would open the door for one for one of the biggest changes in Nico's life, if he was correctly assuming his parents' reaction.
"Nico?" I murmured, resting my hand on his back. "Do you want me to do it?" Nico shook his head, still looking at the ground.
"No," he sighed, looking up to face me. "I know I'm being stupid. It's just a doorbell, after all."
"Still, this is huge for you," I reminded him. "It's common to be scared."
"I'm just going to get it over with," Nico finally decided, pressing the doorbell. The sound was deep and scary sounding, and it seemed to echo throughout the front yard.
We stood outside for a few seconds, Nico taking in shaky breaths until the heavy, ornate door was opened, Nico's mother standing in the doorway. Her brown hair was pulled up in a tight bun on the top of her head and she was wearing a tight silver dress that complimented the string of pearls hanging around her neck. She gave me a tight smile, but I could tell that she was thoroughly inspecting every inch of me, trying to discern if I was even close to good enough to be friends with her son. I couldn't tell what she had decided on, but I couldn't help but notice her smile tighten as she noticed my wrinkly, knock off suit.
"It's lovely to see you again, dear," she said, talking to Nico. "And this must be your little friend. What was your name again? Bobby? Steve?"
"It's Will," I responded, holding out my hand for her to shake. She ignored it.
"Will. What a... charming name." She swirled around, her back to us. "Well, follow me to the dining room. Dinner will begin shortly."
I couldn't help but marvel at the lavish decor of Nico's house. His parents were clearly extremely wealthy, because every step of the way to the dining room was a work of fine art or a tasteful decoration that complemented the room's gold tones. I glanced over at Nico as we were walking, only to find him pale faced, breathing ragged. I took his hand, giving it a light squeeze.
"Just remember that whatever happens tonight, you'll always have me," I mumbled, speaking only into Nico's ear. He responded with a small nod.
"Thanks, Will," he whispered. His breathing seemed to slow down, more at ease.
When we stepped into the dining room the dinner was already set out on the table, vegetables and rolls set out on gold plates. At the center of the table was a turkey, the smell wafting to my nostrils. Nico's mother walked to the chair at the end of the table, facing Nico's father. Hazel, Nico's younger sister, was on the left side of the table, watching me with curiosity. I could tell she was observing me the same way her mother had been but it was obvious she approved of me because she flashed me a warm smile. I smiled back, relieved that I had won over at least one member of Nico's family.
I pulled out Nico's chair for him, sitting down in my own after. The chairs were comfortable and the bottoms cushioned with small gold laced pillows that had been attached to the chair. We sat in awkward silence until Nico's father cleared his throat.
"Shall we get started, then?" Nico's mother nodded and I grabbed the plate in front of me, filling it with roasted vegetables, a buttered roll and a large slab of turkey. Nico didn't move his plate, instead silently communicating with Hazel. She nodded lightly and Nico let out a sigh of relief. I didn't know what they were talking about, but I was glad that Nico was at least felling a little bit better about the situation.
"Nico, dear, aren't you going to eat anything?' Nico looked up from his empty plate to face his mother, who was looking at him, her eyebrows creased. Nico closed his eyes, brushing the back of my hand with his knuckles before standing up. His chair scraped against the cold marble floor, sending a scraping sound reverberating around the room.
"Actually Mom, Dad, there's something I have to tell you," he sighed, looking down at the table. His hands were pressed against the sleek surface, his knuckles turning white at how hard he was pressing down.
"Will isn't here to work on a school project," he began. Both his mother and his father turned to look at me, their eyes narrowing into twin looks of disapproval. Hazel glanced at me, the words I'm sorry written all over her face. I stood up, resting a comforting hand on Nico's back. "He's here because I have to tell you something." I watched as his mother's mouth opened, the realization dawning on her. "Will's my boyfriend. We've been dating for six months. I know you won't approve of us, and I want to say I don't care." He faced me, the fear in his eyes replaced with bravery. "I love Will and I'm not leaving him." He wrapped his arms around my neck, drawing me in for a long, passionate kiss. I could hear Nico's mother squeak and his father give a gasp of indignation, but those noises sounded as if they were underwater. We drew away from each other and Nico held my hand, beaming proudly at his speechless parents.
"Any objections?" he asked. There was a beat of silence until his mother stood up, face soaked with rage.
"Nico Di Angelo, this is unacceptable!" Nico's mother gasped, her voice almost shaking with fury. "You will not live like this under this roof!"
"Well, then, I guess I'm not living under your roof," Nico decided, squeezing my hand. "I told you, I refuse to leave Will. I love him and if you don't like that, it sounds like a you problem." His parents were gaping as Nico spun around, still holding my hand. "Come on, Will, we're leaving."
"If you leave, don't bother coming back!" Nico's father called after us as we left the dining room. Nico halted, his confident steps becoming less assured. His grip on my hand loosened, but strengthened again, becoming stronger than ever. He started to march again, slamming open the door and pulling me out. The front door slammed shut, leaving us alone in the now dark front lawn.
Nico leaned against his car, tilting his head back to look at the stars glittering above us. I could see a hint of a tear in the corner of his eye as we stood in silence, waiting for the other one to say something.
"Nico, I don't know what to say," I said finally, shattering the silence between us. Nico gave a shaky chuckle.
"Neither do I," he muttered. "I just gave up my family for you." He turned to face me and I immediately felt guilty. He had only been dating me for six months, and I had just ruined his relationship with most of his family. "And I don't regret a single bit of it."
"What?" I gasped. "You- you don't?" Nico shook his head, giving me a huge smile.
"I feel freer that I ever had, and it's all because of you. I love you, Will Solace."
"I love you, too, Nico Di Angelo."
The door creaked open, flooding the front lawn in harsh light and Hazel stepped out of the house, looking around nervously.
"Are you okay?" she asked, speed walking to Nico. She gave him a huge hug and Nico hugged her back, squeezing her into him.
"Yeah, Hazel, I'm fine."
"I'm sorry it had to go down like that," she sighed, holding on to Nico's hand lightly, swinging it around. "So, what are you going to do now? Mom and Dad are saying they're going to cut you off. You won't have any money, and you won't have anywhere to go during the summer. You've never lived like this."
"I'll get a job," Nico decided. "I can live at school, and I have Will."
"You can stay with me any time you need," I promised. Hazel looked over at me, giving me a quick once over.
"So, this is Will, huh?" she held out her hand and I shook it. "He seems like a good guy. Take care of my brother, okay?"
"I will," I told her. Her shoulders relaxed.
"As long as you're okay, Nico." She gave him another hug, burying her face in his shirt. "I'll find a way to visit you." There was a yell from inside, and Hazel winced. "See you later, Nico."
"See you later." Nico watched as Hazel retreated into the house.
"So, what do we do now?" I asked. Nico shrugged, leaning against the car and looking back up at the stars.
"Whatever we want, Will. It's just us against the world.
Hey guys! So this was a long one, over 2k words( I regret nothing). I hope you liked it and remember, requests are always open.
