Chapter 26:Aborted Eid
Hi guys,
I'm putting this up here because I feel its important.
Updating for me is a joy, its not a chore. I sincerely love writing and piecing words together. And I especially love writing Soiled. However, the past few updates has been putting me off.
Some of you won't comment, won't vote, and some of those who do, leave rude 'update' messages.😳 It's not fair. Its not fair on the hours I spend writing this story. So, please lets comment. I promise to reply each comment. Let me feel good about what I'm doing.
Thank you. Happy reading.
"Here, I got this for you." Adeel held out a white thread bracelet with beads to me. I accepted it with a wide smile.
"Thank you so much." I held out my hand and he slipped it onto my left wrist pulling the drawstrings before making a knot. I turned my wrist over and over, the white colour made a contrast against my dark skin.
"I love it. Thank you." I go back to tying my scarf around my head, I had made up Zarah, Safiyya and Maama earlier. Don't ask me how I did it on an Eid morning, I wonder too.
"Isn't it too small?" I stop my motions of putting eyeliner over my eyelid.
"Small?" He nods and sits on the bed, I watch as he swipes his hands slowly down his face. Does he think I don't value his gifts.
"I absolutely adore this present, its colour against my skin is breathtaking." He nods and sets his cap on his head, he looks so dreamy.
"So how do I look?" I turn to him a few minutes later and his eyes coolly assess me from head to toe.
"Veil?" I rush to pick my black veil and pull it around my body before posing.
"Stunning. Ma sha Allah."
I pick up my purse and he hands me a black praying mat. I fold it under my purse and we walk out quickly.
"Adeelu, go with Inna, your father, and Zarah. Nabeela will go with Ajike, Safiyya with Humaira." I walk briskly to a red four wheel drive waiting at the edge of the drive. Safiyya and Humaira look so pretty in their blue anko ankara and matching veils.
"How far?" Safiyya asks and I tell her who we are going with. Ajike sluggers in a few minutes later.
"Sorry ladies, make una no vex. I've been so tired, I just want this baby to come. I'm so overdue." She's dressed in a brown gown that flows from the bodice.
"Its fine, let's go. I hope we still meet the eid prayers." I switch on the car and drive out of the compound.
"How come you didn't go with Mu'adh and the kids?" She sighs at my question.
"I didn't plan to go at all. I was so tired and I felt so worn out. Then about thirty minutes after Mu'adh left, I felt better and decided to take a bath. So, here I am." I smile towards her and a thought occurs to me.
"Aren't you way overdue?" She smiles at me before rubbing her belly tenderly.
" Forty-five weeks and two days." I gasp.
"Innalilahi, that's ten months and some days ah." She smiles and I'm suddenly irritated by her smile.
" Fawad was born in his eleventh month, its normal with me. Only Khay Khay regulated a bit at eight months." Wow. I don't think I could have this sort of patience, I'd have asked to be induced a long time ago or better a C.section.
"May Allah make it all easy for you. May He give you the best of them all." She mutters an Ameen and Safiyya and Humaira echo her.
"How was meetingInna saude?" I laughed out loud and quickly clap my hands to show my glee.
"She was so cool. Wallahi, At first I felt like I was going to meet a jury. She just talked and we went inside after five minutes." Ajike looks at me with her mouth wide open.
"That old woman made me sit on my knees when I was almost seven months pregnant. My knees were burning from rug burns for days afterwards. She didn't even regard me when I came over yesterday. She just replied my greeting with a huff. Innalilahi." I laughed out louder and she smacked my arm in obvious discomfort.
"Sorry, I won't laugh anymore." She huffs and looks iyt of the window.
"What did you do to her sef." I smile and think before coming up blank.
"It was all grace and the mercy of Allah S.W.T" I flick my scarf and we all laugh out loud.
I look in the mirror and see a Toyota Hilux blinking its headlights at me. I hold the steering tighter and wait to feel anything from the tires, nothing happens, I look down to see if my skirt caught the door while I got in, nothing. Why flip headlights at me then?
I peer properly into the side mirror and see that the driver continued to flash his headlights. I looked around and we were surrounded by lentil plantations on both sides. I used a trick I read in a book long time ago on one lane roads, STAY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD.
"Is everything OK? Affy? You look nervous." I bite my cheek before maintaining my balance in the middle of the road.
" I think the vehicle behind is following us." She shouts Innalilahi and Safiyya grips my chair tighter, I felt it.
" We haven't offended anyone have we?" I smile bitterly, Husband number one must be trying to retaliate. I tell her this and she shakes her head.
"We didn't want to tell you, but he his in the hospital after he fainted like an imp. He's lost at least eighty percent of his business. He won't even dream of doing this." My heart pounds like a pestle on mortar and my palms begin to sweat, I quietly recite Suratul-Khaf. Safiyya begins to pray under her breath.
The other car slams into the rear of my car and I feel myself having to forcefully slow down. Innalilahi
I pull to the the side of the road to avoid another car in front of me.
" Ajike call Muad'h. I don't know how this is going to end. Just call him." The Hilux slams into the car again and the airbags coke out with a whoosh knocking out Ajike's phone from her hand. Ya Rahman
Ajike began to blindly look for her phone, I looked in the mirror again and I saw that the occupants of the other vehicle had come down. This is not good.
"Get down slowly or I'll shoot both of your legs." My heart feels like its beating in my throat, I look over at Ajike. She's calm.
Safiyya's makeup has been ruined by tears, tears are poring like from a tap. She's holding Humaira tightly.
"I don't like to repeat myself. You either do it slowly or I do it for you forcefully. I push up the airbag on the driver side and open the car door. Another man in black is ordering Ajike out of the car. I look in the back for Safiyya. I should have let them stay in Abuja, if they stayed back, they would have been safe.
Ya Allah. Ajike slowly exits the car and the man shoots her phone to make a point and we all jump, Safiyya and Humaira gave earsplitting screams. Innalilahi, innalilahi, innalilahi. Ya Rabb, save us. Send help to us.
I'm sweating buckets by now and as I turn to take out my slippers, he hurries me up with a guttural voice, his left hand goes to clamp my right arm tightly. Ya Allah, forgive me all my sins.
"Let's get you nice and dandy."
His educated Hausa accent, the stale smell of tobacco and cigarette smoke together with a minty smell are all I think about before it goes black.
