Their first kiss as husband and wife...
In this lifetime... in these bodies... in this flesh.
Anirudh couldn't help it. He felt like he was leading her on. Somehow, his words held depth, conviction... as if there were years of experience behind them. And as soon as he spoke, he was confused. Because he meant every word he was saying, yet didn't believe in them.
However, it was too late.
The moment her lips landed on his, he was a goner.
He closed his eyes, the warmth of her kiss, taking over his senses in the most inciting of ways.
Bondita had her hands around the nape of his neck, as she kissed him with such love. It was a response to his words earlier. The words of eternity. Some universal truth.
A truth that had touched her heart so deeply... that she couldn't help it.
Every bit of anger that she felt towards him melted away.
Anirudh brought his hands to her cheeks, and returned her kiss, unable to help it either. His mind was hazy. He couldn't think straight.
This felt good.
Was it lustful sensations that were arising within him? Or was it just... Bondita?
Would he feel like this, if someone else was in her place?
The kiss got deeper, and his tongue entered her mouth, exploring her with great passion.
Bondita's breathing got heavier, and she edged closer to him on the sofa. She wanted him. Really badly.
And Anirudh wanted her too.
She was still in her wedding saree, and it was slightly heavy, but he managed to pull her onto his lap, without tangling the material everywhere!
How was he supposed to manage if she wore a saree like this?!
He couldn't wait for her to get out of this clothing!
She was kind of sideways on his lap, as his hands moved down her back, when a loud gasp came from the hallway of his condo.
Rimi!
Anirudh and Bondita pulled apart, both alarmed!
"I KNEW IT! This is why I came here! You two are so bad!" Rimi scolded, storming over to the two of them. "You can't control your hormones for one night?! Such a spoiler of rituals!"
Bondita awkwardly got off Anirudh's lap and sat back down on the sofa, straightening her saree.
Rimi got to them and grabbed a cushion from the sofa, before throwing it at Anirudh.
"Ow!" Anirudh said, frowning.
"Put this on your lap!" Rimi ordered, "I can't believe I have to see such things!"
Anirudh's face suddenly got red, and he immediately pushed the cushion over top of his pants, where there was a bulge.
Bondita brought her hand up to her face, and squeezed her eyes shut with embarrassment.
"I don't want to do this ritual!" she just said to Rimi. "Please go home!"
Rimi pushed Bondita's shoulder slightly, making space between Bondita and Anirudh so that she could sit down between them.
"You two got married in already an unritualistic way! Who puts sindoor first?" Rimi huffed, "So at least follow these rituals!"
"Since when were you so into rituals?" Bondita snapped.
Rimi gave her a toothy grin and said, "Since I found out that my best friend is getting married. Seems like the cultured one in me got awoken!"
"I wonder if you were like this in your past life or something..." Bondita muttered unhappily.
"I bet she was," Anirudh pointed out, "She was probably my evil stepmother."
Rimi turned to look at him and huffed, "Someone like you deserves an evil stepmother!"
Bondita just smacked her forehead.
"Anyways," Rimi continued, "It's not like past lives are real!"
"They are real," Bondita muttered.
"You believe in reincarnation?" Anirudh suddenly asked curiously.
"It exists," Bondita said with a firm nod.
"How can you be so sure?" Rimi questioned, eyebrow raised.
"Have neither of you heard of the energy conservation principle?" Bondita questioned.
"The one which states that energy is neither created nor destroyed?" Anirudh asked.
Bondita nodded.
"Yes. It also states that it changes from one form to another. So if energy is not created nor destroyed, then when we die, the energy that was housed in this body, won't just disappear. It has to go somewhere. Where will it go?" she asked.
Rimi thought about it for a moment and said, "That's true..."
"So we can never truly die," Bondita went on. "It's our body that dies... but we will live on."
"So would we have known each other in our last lives?" Rimi wondered.
"Definitely," Bondita said, "I mean... I had stopped believing in God... but..."
Bondita sighed, and she added on, "When I was younger, Maa used to explain things to me. She used to tell me about laws of karma. And how every connection is predestined because of previous karma. So if we are best friends now, it must have been because of some past life karma."
"This is going over my head," Rimi said with a groan.
Anirudh said in a tone of wonder, "All of this is just theoretical."
"It has to be real though," Bondita said, "Because Newton's law applies here. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Although I'm sure this law was there in our roots long before Newton 'discovered' it."
"This is getting too scientific! Didn't you study psychology?" Rimi questioned, rolling her eyes.
Bondita puckered her lips slightly.
She really didn't think about it so much... but all of a sudden, it felt like another form of her had entered her body, coming up with these ideas and principles. She must have studied these principles in school at some point... because until today, she hadn't thought much about reincarnation.
"Bhavani must have some insight," Anirudh murmured, not even realizing he was calling the old lady by her first name as if it were normal, "Her Maa must have taught her something about this. She knows so much."
As soon as Anirudh mentioned Bhavani's Maa, Bondita turned to glare at him.
He was very interested in her Maa, and she had noticed it since their time at the mandap!
"Anyways, it's getting late," Rimi said, yawning, "Let's go to sleep, otherwise I'm afraid that nine months later, there will be a mini version of you two running around! Then people will really talk!"
Bondita's face turned red.
Rimi was embarrassing them so much! It really was like she was taking revenge on times when they must have embarrassed her with their proximity or something!
"What? Why're you looking at me like that? I'm saying it for your own honour!" Rimi pointed out, "People will claim you got pregnant before marriage, if a baby comes out in nine months! So take some time... okay? At least wait six months! Use protection!"
Anirudh looked extremely uncomfortable and embarrassed by her talk as well! He just coughed nervously.
"Rimi stop!" Bondita groaned.
Although... when Rimi mentioned baby... Bondita felt a tug in her heart.
Almost like there was a tale left to unravel...
September, 1950
Anirudh had found out she was pregnant, in an unexpected way.
Although he had noticed her gaining weight, she kept on brushing it off. And Anirudh's mind also subconsciously rejected the possibility of pregnancy. It had to be stress. And when hormones went into an imbalanced state, weight could be gained... so he had justified it subconsciously and started to brush it off as well.
They had been at the farmhouse for over two months now, hiding away from the world.
The rooms would only be dimly lit with candles if needed, to not attract attention... but most of the time, they rested in the dark. They had books with them. Food was delivered once a week through a trusted source in secrecy. Bondita would quietly cook meals for them by a firepit in the kitchen of the farmhouse, trying very hard to cook slowly so the smoke wouldn't be detected.
Even the food they got was simple. Mostly rice and lentils. They didn't get the luxury to get fresh vegetables every single day, or even some milk to make tea or coffee.
Anirudh drank his coffee black, and Bondita would serve it to him. But it was far too bitter for her taste... although in her first pregnancy, she had craved it quite a lot.
What else did they do to pass time?
Well, they would play games sometimes. A game of ludo, or cards -- Trilochan would scream Shiv Shiv Shiv if he saw this, because playing cards was forbidden in his books -- it was considered gambling, and not done by people of good class and caste!
However, the two of them had to pass time.
And playing games, somewhat reminded them of Bondita's childhood. How Anirudh would play with her, and make her laugh and enjoy herself.
Sometimes, they would read to each other. Anirudh would sing songs to her.
And they would have sex. They would make love.
They only had each other here, after all.
And neither knew, when their last day could be.
They never shied away from loving each other.
So that evening, they were at it again.
Anirudh had been feeling her newly formed curves by her waist, his mouth on hers, as he kissed her hungrily. They were already naked, their bare bodies pressed desperately together.
He moved his mouth down her neck, as she breathed heavily, very turned on.
Her pregnancy hormones made the desire for him so much stronger too.
As Anirudh's mouth moved to her breasts, Bondita winced slightly, feeling it quite sensitive as he pulled on her nipple with his mouth. But it was so pleasurable and she didn't want him to stop!
But suddenly, he froze.
Bondita twisted her fingers in his hair, trying to push him further against her breasts so he could keep going, but Anirudh moved his face off her chest, and looked up at her, a look of shock on his face.
"Pati Babu, what's wrong?" she asked, suddenly nervous.
Anirudh got off her body and gently pulled on her nipple, where a very tiny drop of milk had formed.
He looked a the drop of milk, then into Bondita's eyes.
Bondita nervously gulped, her heart starting to pound in her chest hard.
Now it was done.
There was no excuse that she could make of this.
None.
None at all.
She sat up on the bed, and pulled her knees to her chest.
Tears leaked out of her eyes, and she sobbed, "Why is it that everytime I want to protect you, it never works? Why Pati Babu? Why?"
