Half a Person

Its about 5:45 right now and I told myself that I would go see Robin today. She doesn't know I'm coming to see her, well she'll actually just be thinking that I'm coming to see a movie. But still! I want to at least talk to her this weekend. I honestly don't know why I'm being so weird. I've literally never acted this way before.

I threw on light washed slightly baggy jeans and a pink jumper. I put in a matching scrunchie so my hairs in a half up half down look. I then throw on some clear mascara and slightly tinted lip balm before spraying some of my perfume on. I then grab my purse and walk out of my room going down the stairs not trying to have anyone see me.

"Danielle?" I hear my mom call and I turn around looking at her. "Where are you going?" she asks me and I can feel my heart beat faster.

"The movies. I've been wanting to see the new one...it's called Stand by Me," I tell her putting a smile on my face.

"Oh ok. Have Marie go with you so you two can have some time together before she's off to college Sunday."

"Um yeah that'd be great," I say trying to end the conversation quicker. Luckily Marie was already ready so all we had to do was get our shoes on and go to the car. Once we got outside the door the slight wind hit my cheeks and had my hair move a little bit.

"Why're you acting so weird?" Marie asks me hitting the side of my arm slightly.

"What? I'm not acting weird," I protest shaking my head before we both get into the car.

"Yes you are. Were you going to see a boy?" she asks teasing me.

"No. I'm going to see a movie. Well I guess 'we're' gonna go see a movie," I say backing out and starting to head to the theater.

"So then why are you acting so fucking weird?" she asks with a small laugh.

"Are you high or something? Because I'm acting perfectly normal."

"Well yes I am but no I know for a fuckin fact you're acting off," she tells me looking out the window as we pass all the houses.

"I'm acting perfectly normal."

"Dani Imma be honest with you for a second. I've never seen you dress up this much to go to the movies," she says eyeing me up and down. "You're wearing makeup. You literally only wear makeup on school days. I know you better than anyone. Whoever this guy that you're trying to impress...you don't need to try make yourself up for him. He-," she tried finishing before a I cut her off.

"It's a guy for fucks sake," I say more angrily than I mean to. "Sorry," I mumbled quickly after.

"We'll see," she says as I pull into the parking lot and we get out. I can see Robin through the window talking to Steve. There wasn't much light, only the stores and lampposts. I opened the door and Marie followed behind me. I went up to Robins counter and once she turned around I saw a small smile tugging at her lips.

"Where were you yesterday?" she asked me.

"Rosh Chodesh Elul ended yesterday and my parents wanted us all to stay home and celebrate as a family together," I tell her with a small smile.

"Ah cool. So what movie-," she starts saying before cutting herself off, "Is this your sister?" she says in a whispered tone and I nod my head slightly.

"Marie say hi," I say shoving her a little so she'll get the hint.

"Oh um hi I'm Marie," she says with an awkward smile looking between me and Robin.

"Robin," says back introducing herself. "So what movie will you two be watching today?"

"Stand by Me," I tell her and she looks up at me with a teasing look.

"Sorry Dani but I'm afraid you have to be 18 to see that," she jokes with a grin on her lips as she leans to the side on one of her hands.

"Robin," I say eyeing her and she hands me the tickets. I hand her the money as Marie walks over to get our popcorn.

I walk past her as she tells me, "Good pick by the way." I just nod trying to hide a smile before walking over over to Marie. She had already finished getting the popcorn and drinks so we headed into the theater.

"So I was wrong. You wanted to see a girl," she says in a quiet voice and I just stare at her confused.

"What do you mean? I just wanted to see my friend," I say as we take out seats in the empty room.

"Dani you don't have to lie to me," she says sitting down the cups in the cup holders. "You know it's okay, right? Liking her. There's nothing wrong with that."

"You know me. I've never had a crush on someone and I definitely don't have a crush on her," I deny but I can feel my eyes starting to burn. I don't know what's happening.

"Then how do you know you don't like her? You've never liked anyone so therefore you don't know what the feelings are like."

"Ok so then how does one feel when they like someone?" I ask her turning to look at her.

"Well by the way your eyes look right now. I think you know you do, but the way I know when I like someone is that I think about them all the time. I want to see them all the time...I talk to them a lot. Dani I heard you last night. You guys talked for three hours straight and never had a dull moment. You always had something to talk about."

Right then everything started clicking in my head. The reason I've "never" liked anyone is because I've had a crush on her since the first day we met in sophomore year. Three whole fucking years. All because one little interaction. I guess I just now realized it because this year I'm actually making a point to hang out to her. Maybe I was just scared all these years prior. Scared she wouldn't like me, scared she doesn't feel the same, just scared.

"Um so now you say that. I think I've liked her for...um," I say pausing slumping down into my chair more, "three years," I say quietly.

"Three years?!" Marie whisper yells and looks at me. "And you've only started talking to her this year?"

"Um well we did talk a little in sophomore year, but um yeah."

"Dani I think you're in love with her," she says right before the lights turn dark and the movie starts playing.

Luckily I had seen this movie before because our conversation was the only thing I thought about for the next hour and 29 minutes.
