Chapitre Quarante-Sept
John's family loved Alexander. Almost every single person in John's family absolutely adored and doted upon Alex. The only person who didn't was Henry Jr. who John said was just trying to put up a tough front. Mary, who was the youngest at a mere 15, wouldn't leave the two men alone. Alex didn't mind, but John did.
"I'm sorry about Mary," John apologized when they got a minute alone. "I've always been close with her, and I think she wants you to think she's cool or something." Alex shrugged.
"It doesn't bother me. I like her, she's sweet," Alex said. John was glad his boyfriend was so tolerant of practically everybody. Well, except for Jefferson, but he's not in this chapter.
Wednesday evening was a calm time. Alex was cuddled up in John's lap while Mary babbled on about her drama class. Henry Sr. was in a chair reading a newspaper and James was playing with John's parents' Pomeranian, Chloe.
"We were talking about the seven principles of movement last week, and now we started reader's theater," Mary explained, not caring whether anybody was listening. Alexander, however, was.
"I actually minored in theatre," Alex told her. Mary's head shot up at him, eyes bright.
"Really?" Mary exclaimed. Alex nodded.
"Yup. I majored in education, and double minored in theatre and American history," Alex explained. Now it was Mary's turn to listen intently. "I was gonna do law, but it was super stressful and I decided I wanted to do things I enjoyed."
"That's awesome!" Mary gushed. "I really hope I can get a job in the arts, even though it's difficult." Alex shook his head a little.
"It's not too difficult if you put your mind to it," Alex told her. "Plus, you seem pretty artistic, so I don't think you'll have a problem." Mary blushed, and looked down.
"You somehow got her to shut up," John muttered in Alexander's ear. Alex smacked John's arm and rolled his eyes.
John had spoken too soon, however, because soon Mary continued babbling about some of the colleges she wanted to go to. All was going well, everybody content. Martha was in the guest room upstairs with her husband, and Eleanor was taking a nap in her bedroom. There were no problems. That is, until Henry Jr. walked into the living room.
He didn't specifically say anything. No, what he did was he walked into the room, as one does, and almost sat down. But before he could he looked over and saw John and Alex snuggled together. He made a scrunched-up face, like he was grossed out by something. It wasn't hard to tell what. Then he turned around and walked straight out of the room. Not a word said, but his point made clear.
That was the breaking point for Henry Sr. He looked over seeing a confused Mary, furious John, and a hurt Alexander. There was also an uninterested James, but we aren't going to count him. Henry Sr. got out of his chair and walked into the kitchen where Henry Jr. was. They couldn't make out the entire conversation, but they could hear bits and pieces. Like Henry Jr. saying 'it's disgusting' and 'Why are you taking his side? I'm your son!'. Or Henry Sr. saying 'well your attitude is worse' and 'So is John. And Alex will be someday'. Eventually there was silence, and Henry Sr. came back in, shaking his head.
"I don't know what I'm gonna do with 'im," Henry said, sitting down. The tension hung in the air for a few more minutes until Mary started talking about some cute person in her geometry class, and her vice filled the air. Everybody eventually relaxed and got ready for the day after.
