The next day Sofia was more than confident for her next day at school. Mia, Robin and Clover all helped her to get ready like they did the other day, she ate breakfast and then her and her siblings, Amber and James, were ready to go to school.
"Prince Hugo."
"Princess Amber."
The royals greeted.
"I just wanted to wish you luck.I'm your biggest fan." Amber said.
"You must be if you're coming to watch practice." Hugo said cockily ",The real show will be the try-out race."
"Okay, boys! Let's get started." Sir Gilliam said.
"Hey, Amber!" Sofía greets.
"Huh? Sofia! The bleachers are this way."
"Good morning! Who's ready to race some flying horses?"
"Good morning, Sir Gilliam."
"Oh.Hello, princess. The bleachers are right over there."
"I didn't come to watch, Sir Gilliam.I came to try out for the team."
"What?! What?! What?!" Everyone basically cries out. "What, What's wrong?"
"Umm, only princes can ride in the flying derby." Hugo states matter-of-factly.
"So, princesses can't try out?" Sofía asks innocently
"Well They could, but The flying derby is just not a princess thing." Sir Gilliam stammers.
"There are many things princesses do like hosting balls and dancing too or wearing gowns of pink and blue that's what we like to do there are many things that princes like jousting, polo, and taking hikes suits of armor with lots of spikes that's what we really like we do princess things and we do princely things and no one crosses in between we stick with our routine but who knows what I could bring flying high upon a wing I believe that anything can be a princess thing read a poem or pick daffodils sing wistfully in window sills derby calls for princely skills it's not a proper princess kind of thrill we do princess things and we do princely things and no one crosses in between we stick with our routine we climb trees and jump and swing while we shop for royal bling so don't make a fuss just stick with us and do our princess things but who knows what I could bring flying high up on a wing I believe that anything can be a princess thing" they sing.
"I went to try out for the flying derby team." Sofia told her animal friends.
"That sounds like fun." Mia says.
"Hmm I wish it had been fun." Sofía sighs.
"Uh-oh.What's wrong?"
"Everyone said that only boys should do it."
"What! Robin have you ever heard anything so ridiculous?" Clover cries.
"I don't know. You say ridiculous things all the time." Robin says sassily.
"Hey, I'm serious, Sofia. If you want to ride those flying fleabags-- And I don't know why you would, Makes me dizzy just thinking about it-- But if you really want to do it, Then I say go for it! There's a first time for everything."
"Huh.You're right, Clover."
"Huh, there really is a first time for everything." Robin says sassily again.
"How was flying derby practice today, James? So, then you did actually practice?" Roland asks.
"More or less."
"I have an announcement.I'm going to try out for the team!" Sofía announces.
Amber gasps and says ",Sofia, I already told you, Princesses don't do that."
"Well, there's a first time for everything, Amber." Sofía says with a sly tone.
"I think it's a wonderful idea." Miranda says giving Roland a stern look.
Rolland clears his throat before replying ",As do I."
'"But she doesn't know anything about flying derby. She can't even ride a horse." James exclaims.
"Then someone will have to teach her.Someone like you, James." Roland
"Me? But--what—"
"But what?"
"What will the other princes say?"
"They'll be too busy laughing to say anything." Amber says.
"They'll say what a great brother you are, James." Miranda says.
"And you'll get in some extra practice." Roland says.
"But she doesn't even have riding clothes."
"She will, by morning." Baileywick says with a soft smile gracing his lips.
"Thanks, Baileywick."
"It's settled, then."
It was the next day and they were preparing to practice.
"Sir Gilliam?"
"Huh? Oh.It's you again."
"I'm ready to practice."
"Can I have a horse, please?"
"Well, there's only one horse left, And nobody wants him." Sir Gilliam says quite annoyed.
"I do." Sofía says
"You do? Of course you do."
They enter the stables and are met with a big black and marrow horse.
"What a beautiful horse."
"Oh, not him! Minimus." Sir Gilliam says as the horse moves to reveal a small and purple horse instead.
"He's all yours."
"Hi there, Minimus.Hmm I'm Sofia."
Sofia tells Minimus of her amulets powers and explains how she is talking to him Minimus tries to convince the Princess otherwise but she wouldn't hear it even if he was small she wanted him to be her horse. And Minimus was thankful for it.
Sir Gilliam says ",All right, everyone! The try-out race is at the end of the week, Right here on our derby course.Only the first two riders To cross the finish line make the team. So, let's practice hard, fly fast, And always be royal."
Sofia was having trouble getting in her horse so James came to help. But before they could get started trouble came their way.
"When you're done, James, Can you help my sister get on her pony?" Hugo said while walking away laughing.
James took Sofia away, he tried helping her but poor Sofia kept falling off her horse and onto the safety cushions placed around. But no matter how many times she fell she wouldn't give up.
"You sure you don't what to stop?" James asks.
"No way! I am going to try out for the team."
"You've got to stay on your horse first.I knew you were a bad racer, James, But you're a worse teacher.I guess flying derby isn't a princess thing after all." Hugo says.
"You can make fun of me all you want, Hugo, But not my sister."
James let Sofia sit on front of him while he tried to teach her the feeling was exhilarating she cheered, Amber and her friends spotted her from below they were astounded and surprised. By then Sofia could fly on her own and was flying the course but before they left they tried the last course but Sofia had trouble going up the steeple and almost crashed, gasps could be heard from all directions.
"Sofia? Are you okay? I saw you almost crashed." Amber says worriedly.
Amber was really worried about her sister, she only had one more day left of practice and she didn't want her to continue, so before Amber left she pleaded her sister to at least consider her words of advice.
"Soo, uh, how'd it go?" Clover asked
"Lousy. I can't even make it to the finish line, And I only have one more day until the race.Amber said I should quit.I don't know what to do."
"My mother had a saying. The early bird gets the worm." Robin said.
"What does Sofia need a worm for?" Mia asks.
"She doesn't Mia.Hey, what Robin's trying to say is, Get a early start tomorrow.
You've got one more day, Sofia.Make it count! But first you better get down to dinner."
"Thanks guys." Thanked Sofia.
As Sofia was going down to dinner she saw James and so they decided to walk together.
"So Sofia how's derby coming?" Asked James.
"Tomorrow I'm going to get a early start," Sofia answered.
They were now nearing dinner hall when they heard Amber scream. They rushed over but before they could enter...
*In dinning hall*
"WHATTTTTTT!!!!!!!" Amber screamed.
"Amber honey, I know you care about James and Sofia," at this the siblings behind the door decided to find out what it was about them and so they decided to spy on them. "But your siblings don't get a choice for if they don't they could be put in potential danger."
"But mother, father this my baby sister and brother your talking about-"
James and Sofia looked at each other in curiosity and confusion. They could hear Ambers voice cracking.
"Amber your siblings need to marry-"
At that word there were two very loud gasps from behind the door, the two children entered to see three surprised faces that soon turned to guilty faces.
"What's this about us getting married," James whispered.
"Sofia, James my dears, you have been betrothed, Sofia you are betrothed because 1000 years ago a curse was placed on our kingdom along with the kingdom of Albuquerque and every two centuries the youngest daughter and youngest son get betrothed or else you will die, luckily this is the last time that this curse will take place for the curse was only meant to last for a thousand years, James you are being betrothed because 3 centuries ago a promise was made between the kingdoms of Enchancia and Zumaria but it could not be played out until now for different reasons. But you weren't supposed to find out now." Roland said
Amber kept the water works going.
"So, may I ask who exactly are we marrying?" Sofía questioned. They went and sat down slowly eating.
"James, honey you will be marrying princess Vivian of Zumaria, and Sofia dear you will be marrying prince Hugo of Albuquerque," at this two pieces of cutlery dropped.
"What?" Sofia said barley above a whisper.
James ferociously stood out of his seat.
"No," he said with such authority, that Sofia flinched.
"I don't care that I'm marrying Vivian but I will not let my sis-"
"James if Sofia doesn't marry Hugo they will both die, they have no choice," Amber cried. Unwillingly he forced himself to sit down, eyes like steel.
"It's ok mum and dad if it means keeping the peace and saving lives then we will do it right James?" Sofia questioned uncertainly.
James nodded not trusting his voice.
"But you weren't supposed to find out so not a word to anyone," Roland said sternly.
As the siblings went to bed they had almost forgotten about the marriages, almost.
"Good morning, Sir Gilliam!" Sofia said cheerfully.
"I'm taking off into something new there's so much I got to do and I'm the only one who thinks I'll make it through but the only way to win is to try and try again they want to count me out but I'll make them count me in I can be anything I can see anything you can teach anything I can reach anything I can do anything so can you anything that you try look and see you can be anything anything"
"Okay, minimus, we can do it this time." Sofia said enthusiastically.
"That's what you said the last four times." Minimus said unenthusiastically.
"Well, here we go! Up, Minimus! Up, up, up!"
"Uh, umunh! We're not going to make it, Sofia!" Minimus exclaimed.
"Come on one more time," Sofia said.
As they were flying back to the starting line a flock of geese came out of nowhere, causing minimus to fly upright, and Sofia was so surprised that she let go of the reins. She screamed. Hugo was also there to practice when he heard her scream he instantly acted, it was a reflex, as he and his brother had a game similar to the situation at hand, he flicked his reigns and flew as fast as he could.
...she was still falling and nearing the ground at a intense pace...
...a few more metres and he was almost there...
...she started crying...
...determination was written all over his face...
...and then...
...he caught her....but just. She grasped onto him as if he was her life source and if she let go she would die, he could feel his shirt getting wet from her tears.
He landed he tried moving but she made it impossible.
"Sofia you need to let go," he said.
She shook her head vigorously.
His horse bended down on all fours in a resting position so it was possible for Hugo to get down with Sofia in his arms since she wouldn't let go due to the traumatising event that just happened.
"Sofia, you need to trust me. Ok I'm going to let go of you now and your not going to die, your safe ok I won't let anything happen to you, focus on my voice and breathing ok," he said gently.
He placed her hands on his chest and started breathing slowly.
"Breathe with me Sofia, ok?"
This time she let out a little ok he almost missed it.
He started whispering things to comfort her and convince her she was on solid ground. After a few minutes she was breathing normally she was ok but not she was not fine. He sat there just being there was ok for her after fifteen minutes she was back to normal. He looked at her she almost forgot who he was. He realised who she was and stepped back.
"It's all my fault." Minimus said ",You should switch to a bigger horse."
"You're big enough."
"A faster horse, then."
"Minimus, you're plenty fast."
"You can talk to your horse all you want. But it's not going to get you through that steeple. And if you can't finish the race, why even bother starting it? You should go back where you belong. With the other princesses. Plus after what just happened princess you should consider your safety," Hugo said harshly.
"It wasn't my fault, the birds came out of nowhere and I lost my balance," Sofia said a little to aggressively.
Hugo shook his head and stalked of.
*Day of race*
It was the day if the race and there were a lot of people here to see if a princess could make the team. The racers got into their starting cubicles, to Sofia's right was James and to her left was Hugo. The fairies released the riders and of they went, families cheering. Hugo just couldn't bear to watch Sofia cross the finish line, mainly because of what happened that morning but his pride was overpowering that thought and he would never admit it , so he tried stopping her by 'accidentally' pulling in front of her so she could be held behind, and give up, she almost did if it hadn't been for James to encourage her to continue. Amber also so what Hugo did and was furious. In the end James and Sofia made the team.
