Chapter 16

Previously:

"I wish to take over my mother's role, if it was so important that she could... could put her life on the line for it, I want to live her legacy." Hugo stated, standing firm, his grip tightening on his sword, as if that was the only thing that was saving him from insanity.

3rd Person P.O.V.:

"Fine then, if that is what you wish, then you shall have it," Orion paused, sneering, he added ", human."

He said it as if it was an insult, like it was disgusting. Humans, disgusting. He was disgusting. His mother was disgusting.

Orion shed his sword and came at him, a slick cut aiming for his chest. Hugo doged, a small tear just below his left shoulder.

Finally, all the emotions that Hugo had been containing to that point finally came crashing out. Yes, they do say that when one attacks under emotional circumstances, they lose all senses, especially logic and that is their downfall.

And right now that was what was being tested.

Yes, Hugo was furious, depressed, he was going through it all, for crying out loud he had just lost his mother! His mother for bloody sake!

He was furious, these, these stupid creatures had caused this. It was all their fault. And they had to pay.

Hugo wielded his sword tighter, yelled with all his might, in all his agony. But he did not move. He only breathed out, hard. Once. Twice. And then for a full minute, not a sound.

Orion stared in confusion, was he dead?

And then he turned, slowly, his whole body, sluggish. His arms especially. Orion smirked at this, this would be an easy win, for sure.

Hugo slowly walked towards Orion, his sword being dragged in the dirt. The sight was enough to produce a roaring laughter. Then out of nowhere, he sprinted and used that build up to jump up, bringing his sword up in one hand, and slashing right at Orion's face.

If Orion had not been trained for years, he would no longer have a face. He barely avoided Hugo's slash. Blood trickled out of his right cheek. Orion was more than surprised, he was baffled.

Hugo landed in a squat and stood up calmly. He turned around and finally Orion saw it. His eyes, they held, a lot. A fire. A saddeness. A pain. And in a second it was gone, replaced with a look, Orion just recognised. His eyes were now dead. Nothingness.

This battle was going to be... interesting.

Orion held his sword up, smiling, ready. Orion striked first. Slashing at his left side, aiming to disable that whole side, he already had one strike, might as well aim until he could only rely on his right side. Then victory would come as easy as a frog swimming.

Hugo blocked. Attacking himself, feigning an attack on his left shoulder, switching at the last second, going in for his chest. Orion just blocked, but the tip had pierced his armour, barely scratching his skin.

"Ha! Ha! Ha!" Orion mocked.

Again Orion attacked this time, leaning back and using the momentum to add a spring to his attack, this time the butt of his sword landing an attack on Hugo's right knee. Losing his balance, Hugo wabbled. Hugo rolled away to keep from fully losing his position.

Hugo growled. Sneering. Hugo again attacked, this time he ran in a zig zag and did not throw any signs of attack until he was up in Orion's space. Aiming this time for his left and managed a slice at his lower abdomen.

Hugo briefly smirked. Orion gritted his teeth.

This time Orion went full force, grabbing his sword with both hands, going in with all his strength and attacking for his centre. Again Hugo blocked, their swords connecting, they held that position, pushing back and forth for a minute or so before Hugo managed to make Orion stumble.

Each strike held so much power and precision, each attack was on point that even Orion was a little taken aback. His attacks were unexpectedly, controlled. What made it more frightening was that they were filled with anger. That slight difference of assistance, the pressure, the ability to control his emotions to work for him was, well, impressive.

So to make this battle more entertaining, Orion added fuel to the fire.

"Your mother, she was a good person, however she was unnecessary," he bellowed.

"Orion!" Vega warned.

But he couldn't care less, he ignored her and continued, too immersed in his battle. "We could have done fine without her!"

"In fact, she might as well be the very reason why we even had casualties in this battle!"

"She was a fool!"

At that Hugo lost it. As if the poor boy hadn't been through enough.

Bellowing in anger, he charged, with a much faster pace than before. Too fast for Orion to defend against. He tried aiming for the boy as quickly as he came, but the way Hugo was attacking him was with such speed he could not anticipate his attacks. It was as if he was just running around him in circles.

In fact he was, for now he was aiming to dizzy Orion. Then he attacked. Weak points, elbows and knees all going down.

It had actually just hit Orion that Hugo had left his sword on the side. He was being attacked with a dagger.

Orion finally fell on his knees, and within a second a forceful kick to the chest landed him metres away from where he was just seconds ago.

Orion now lay against a tree, his sword had skidded in front of Hugo who kicked it even further away.

Picking up his sword, and with such an aura, Hugo walked up to the man now slouched against the tree trunk. He took his sword and aimed for his neck.

Orion looked up to the skies, this would be the last time he would see it, closing his eyes as he prepared for his fate. He awaited the strike and heard the swoosh.

In one strike and crack and well...

Nothing. He waited, and opened his eyes, his vision noticed the sword was stuck millimetres away from killing him.

"Don't ever disrespect my mother, ever, again." Hugo bitterly sneered.

As Hugo pulled the sword out of the trunk he made sure to skid it against Orion's neck, a cut just enough to give him what he deserved. Red painted the cutting edge of his sword. He walked away in silence.

He hopped onto his horse. Before he flew away, without looking back, he said; "in the next three days I expect to hear from you and brief me on what my mothers role was and what I will do in her footsteps."

And with that he swished the reins of his horse flying anywhere, as long as it wasn't here.

Orion watched, the tears flowed as he watched the boy disappear into the distance. He really was a spitting image of her.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Upon learning about the death of the Queen, the people of Albuquerque mourned for days.
It was hard on everyone. Especially Hugo, he had after all witnessed his mothers death, but it's not like he could tell anyone.
Sofia tried her best to be there for Hugo, her heart heavy for him. She did not leave his side the whole time. But he made it difficult, not that she blamed him.
He didn't communicate with her, or anyone for that matter, for a week straight. It had been a struggle, Hugo barely ate, Sofia was getting worried, she tried her best to force him, only getting a few bites or sips of water each time. She also found him once too close to the edge of a balcony, and her heart stopped for a second.
Hugo had insisted that it was nothing, but after that Sofia refused to leave his side. She would wait outside every time he would bathe. She followed him everywhere, it did get on his nerves and he had exploded once or twice, but she would just say nothing and continue to follow him. She had pushed a couch next to his bed and slept next to him, the first couple of days clenching his hand, watching him sleep first, before she would close her eyes herself.
Once Hugo started to heal up and become himself, he was ever so grateful to Sofia and he had made sure to let her know multiple times, each time she would smile softly saying that it was nothing. But they both knew how much it had meant. And that's all that mattered.
Once Hugo had finally came to acceptance and terms with his mothers death. He attempted to take over her job. Of course it wasn't easy at first, but he started getting the hang of it especially with his goal of becoming someone his mother would be proud of.
Hugo later learned that what Orion had said was not meant, it was his way of releasing his anger and sadness. He had looked up to Hugo's mother like a sister. She had been there for him for everything, ever since he was elected as head of protectors.
He didn't exactly forgive him for what he had said, but he understood him and it made it easier for them to get along with. To even make up for it, Orion personally trained Hugo.
