3rd person P.O.V.:

Chrysta and Queen Adaria split up halfway, each with 6 flares, two of each colour. Hugo hid in the bushes out of sight. As Chrysta zoomed by, he noticed her properly; she definitely wasn't human. Whatever she was, figuring that out wasn't his priority, he had his mother to deal with. His mother's mood and attitude worried him, he had never seen her like this, but even he knew he would get no explanation if he asked; following was the best option for him. It was too late to go back now.

This was only the beginning.

A little while later, his mother arrived where team two was stationed. Again Hugo couldn't comprehend what he was looking at, it was a whole army of unknown creatures that he had only seen in his childhood books.

His childhood books! No wonder he knew the name of the creatures that were hovering around his mother. And now looking at it he recognised a few more, Centaurus, rompkins, trolls, even articondors, a myth even.

"Just what in the world is happening?" Hugo whispered to himself.

Finally, his mother landed in a clearing with more of the creatures from his childhood books. He landed a little further away from where they all stood. Sliding off his horse, he crawled closer to listen.

He tried to understand what was going on, but nothing that was coming out of their mouths made sense.

He picked out a few words like; 'attack', 'flares', 'signals', but he couldn't hear all of it properly.

Minutes passed and Hugo was starting to get really confused. Then out of nowhere, the forest creatures all at once evacuated...? Flocks of birds created shadows large enough to cover yards, their squawks were enough to make Hugo cringe and cover his ears. It was as if they were running away from something.

At that, one of the generals — or so Hugo assumed — sent off two flares, red and purple.

Then Hugo felt the ground underneath him shake. He unleashed his sword just in case.

Then out of the clearing popped out a single man, he was scrawny looking, he wore a pair of trousers and a loose shirt, a little too big for him, his hair was midnight black, but it looked like it housed hundreds of birds. But what made him unnatural was his face. His face was littered with scars everywhere. Some looked fresh. His lips were chapped, but worst of all, his eyes, well sockets, were empty. There was nothing there, but upon closer inspection, Hugo saw two green glowing orbs just floating in opposite directions.

"Finally, do you know how long I waited for you!" he spoke, well the green mist around him did.

"20 years! 20 long years! I rotted for years, waiting, planning for the best moment!"

"And what moment would that be, your capture?" Chrysta sassily questioned.

"No," he slyly replied, a breathy laugh escaped, escalating to full-on howls, he stopped so suddenly that Hugo flinched.

He then looked straight into Adaria's eyes, raising a bony finger at her and what he said next sent shivers down everyone's spines, "her execution."

Hugo could feel the anger churn through his veins, how dare this rat claim something so disgusting.

"Did I do something to you?" Adaria asked, cautiously.

The man just scoffed, "don't act like you don't know, you're not innocent."

But when she just stared back in confusion. He laughed, but it was dry and mocking.

"Oh come on! Don't tell me you're already that old, I mean how could you forget me?!"

"You used to always come down on a Sunday, and would treat me like I was a Prince! You would call me the Prince of Agriculture!"

Adaria stared, confusion written all over her face, and then suddenly she gasped, remembering. The strange man nodded. It was one of the villagers her and her family would visit personally when she was younger, to thank them for the fresh crops they sent. And there would always be this little boy who would hide behind his parents. But it didn't take Adaria much to win him over, he became instantly comfortable with her and the shy boy turned out to be very talkative. Always talking about the crops they grew.

"That's right, now you know."

"Alex-Alexander is that really you?" Adaria asked, hands hovering over her heart. She looked again and pity overcame her, just what had happened to that poor innocent boy.

"Yes! It is! You finally recognised me, then you'll remember how you did absolutely nothing when my family lost everything, you and your family turned a blind eye to when I needed you the most." he sneered, his tone getting harsher and harsher with each word.

"Alexander, what-what are you talking about?"

"Don't play innocent!" he glared.

"Alex-Alex I really don't know-,"

"Shut it!" he hissed, fists balling. He calmed himself, running his fingers through his knotty hair. "Everyone knows that when the fire broke out at my family's farm, no one did anything to notify anyone, no one did anything to put it out. So it spread, killing everything, including my parents, all because you didn't take any precautions like backburning."

"Alex, I-I'm so so sorry, I had no idea you were going through such-," Adaria mourned.

"Save it, it's too late for 'sorries' now," he spit.

"Adaria, we don't have much time left, we need to start our plan of attack." Vega interrupted quietly.

"He's-he's not himself-,"

"Adaria-,"

"No! I know. So don't hurt him." She ordered with such authority that they all nodded.

"I will save you, Alex. I promise." She vowed. There was not a sliver of hesitance, so confident, that it made Alex feel a thousand different emotions.

Adaria turned to the soldiers, and commanded, "you all know what you must do! Do not panic and everything will be fine! Now go!"

Alex laughed. How cute, he thought. Alex then let himself go and the mist that spoke for him evaporated into thin air. And then quiet.

But then it returned, but this time with an army of crows that had talons made of silver. And the ground shook once more, and out appeared beasts. They all had the same green mist now controlling them.

"How'd he do that?!" Chrysta gasped.

"Only shapeshifters can do that..." Vega noted.

Alex agreed with her, smiling evilly as he told them his heritage. "See, what you don't know is that my mother was actually a descendant from the Isle of Witches, a shapeshifter if you will, and my father a direct descent from the Isle of Memories, but they both kept it a secret and well, I inherited their blood and look at me now," he cackled widely.

"Now let us have fun," he cheered creepily.

The battle began, an attack from both sides, except Alex, who stayed in position. It was weird at first, but then Hugo realised that it was on purpose. He was using the chaos around him as an opportunity to attack his mother.

However, his mother was prepared and deflected every attack he threw, Alex was starting to get irritated. And Hugo silently cheered for his mother, still hidden behind the bushes.

Alex attacked again, this time two spears, one aimed at Adarias legs and the other at her torso, she dodged the leg one first and then squatted down to dodge the one that was aimed for her chest.

However, what she didn't realise was that the first attack was just a distraction, the real one was coming now, three arrows aimed for her chest. There would be no time to get into position to deflect it. Alex smiled psychotically, victory would be his in the next ten seconds.

Alex's release was on point, there was basically nothing that could be done, Adaria stood and stared as death came for her. 0.03, 0.02, 0.01. She waited for the contact, but a blur of black landed in front of her deflecting the attack. The sudden blur, or person then turned to her, asking, "are you alright?!"

Adaria gasped.

Chrysta instantly drew her crossbow.

"No! Don't hurt him! He's my son!"

At that Chrysta lowered her weapons and scoffed, before going back to the battle at hand. She didn't have time to be meddling with a mere child.

"Hugo what are you doing here?" she slapped his arm. He winced slightly, not too surprised though, he half expected that sort of reaction.

"Mum, no time!" Hugo yelled over the chaos, running as he dodged a flying weapon.

"Hugo!" his mother sternly yelled, also dodging a wild beast under Alex's command.

"And if anything mum- Watch out!" Hugo yelled as he pulled his mother down and deflected an arrow with his sword.

"If anything, I'm the one who deserves an explanation, don't you think?" Hugo stated, turning to his mother. She squinted in response.

"Look we can talk about this later, I'm already here, I might as well help, plus there's no way I'm leaving my mother in the middle of the battlefield!"

She pursed her lips but nodded nonetheless.

"Fine, but you're not completely of the hook,"

"Back at you," Hugo winked. Going back to the battle at hand, all seriousness back.

Adaria shook her head, a small smile making her face as she watched her son. Pride swelled in her chest.

The battle continued on for an hour more, Alex would disappear and reappear. He was the main target, but his army of crows and wild beasts that literally popped out of Tartarus were making it difficult.

Hugo and Chyrsta were both doing their best to protect Adaria, Chrysta was littered in scratches. Hugo's hair and clothes were covered in dirt and dust.

Alex attempted another attack on Adaria, he sent four attacks from all directions, Hugo and Chrysta blocked the swarm of crows with talons. But what they didn't realise was that they had left a gap open wide enough for his real weapon of the day to enter.

His birds, arrows and other means of attack were just bluffs. A powerful spell that harboured all of his hatred, mixed in with the regrets of his dead parents, with a touch of the world's tragedies, was taken out of his pocket and released.

The force of the spell sent everyone flying, including Alex.

The spell hit Adaria, and she flew landing on her back, the magical poison started spreading across her body, she screamed in pain, her entire body acting as if it was on fire.

"MOTHER!"

"ADARIA!" Chrysta yelled, frozen in place.

Alex chuckled.

At that moment everyone froze.

Hugo ran but when he was a metre before he was flung back by a forcefield that appeared with his contact. Hugo got up in second and ran, again he was flung back. This time he approached the force field slowly, slamming his hands, screaming.

"MOTHER!"

When he took action Vega yelled out, "Save her! The rest of you comply with our mission, we should not let this go in vain!"

Hugo's hands had started to bleed but he couldn't care less, he wanted his mother.

He smashed and kicked, he used his swords, but nothing was working. He screamed even more.

He looked at his mother and their eyes met briefly, and in that one second they communicated.

Hugo breathed out. He took out his dagger and studied the forcefield. After a minute of searching for a weak point, he held his arms above his head, putting as much force as he could, his dagger struck. The forcefield fell apart, sending out an unnatural wind, which led to most losing their balance, Hugo held his ground, his arms up to shield his face from some loose debris.

Hugo ran to her side, cradling her head in his arms. She held onto his arm as best as she could, barely grabbing it.

"M-m-mum, are you okay?!"

She gasped, not making any coherent words, it was a mess.

"M-m-mother? Mum? Mum? Mama!"

She couldn't speak, so she trailed her hand to grab his, fumbling along the way.

"No no no, you can't do this, mum!" Hugo cried.

She squeezed his hand in response, trying her best to comfort her son.

"But who's going to help me when I need it? Who is going to be there for me during recitals and competitions?" Hugo questioned, tears kept streaming down his face.

Hugo's mother attempted to communicate with her son, "y-y-you'll be-e fi-n-ne, ma-my lo-hv-e, I love you."

Brushing aside her hair, he whispered, "I love you too."

She smiled at that softly.

Her body slumped in his arms.

Hugo hollered out in agony. The tears wouldn't stop. He couldn't care less that he had just been in the middle of a battlefield. He had forgotten about that. He let out his cries to his heart's content; he honestly did not care about anything at this point.

Hugo's tears eventually stopped. He did not move though. He stayed kneeled beside his mother, her body growing cold in his arms. He stayed like that for hours.

Eventually Vega, Chrysta and Orion approached him.

"Child, she needs to be sent off properly and in a manner that won't expose the way she was actually killed, so-," Vega started, but was cut off.

"I beg your pardon?!" Hugo breathed, anger gushing out like vapour from a volcano.

"Don't get us wrong, I do not like this any better than you, but she did everything in her power to protect the Mystic Isles, if you really want to see her work go down the drains, go ahead and announce it to the world, and it will mean war," Chrysta emphasised, crossing her arms, tears still in her eyes.

"Do not, dare, act like you care! I saw you all, your first priority was to make sure to end this battle, look around, everyone has gone, as if there was no battle in the first place! " Hugo sneered, wiping the last of his tears.

"That is the only way to protect-,"

"Protect? Protect?! You couldn't even protect one person, but you think you can protect a whole kingdom?! Please!" Hugo scoffed, standing up, gently laying his mother's head down.

"None of you even tried to save her," he whispered desperately.

"That was ignes impes, a curse that no one can undo, if someone tried to help, she would only suffer even more," Vega softly told him, rubbing her arms, looking away.

"Look, I know you're hurt, I am too, sh-she was like a mother to me too, so I know, but she needs to rest peacefully, at least knowing she died for what she loved to protect,"

Hugo was about to protest until he heard the next part;

"You, her family, her kingdom and people," Chrysta softly told him.

At that, the waterworks began once again, Hugo wiped at his face furiously with his sleeve.

Hugo cleared his throat after a minute to fix himself up.

"Okay, fine, however, since the mystic Isles was so important, I would like to become her successor, as...,"

"The next envoy," Chrysta whispered behind her hand.

"The next envoy," Hugo claimed confidently.

"Why should we have anything to do with this mere mortal?! We even let him keep his memories, that's pushing it enough!" Orion sneered.

"Orion please," Vega warned, giving him a look to shut up.

"He did save me from an attack and he seems to have a basic knowledge of the Mystic Isles. Not only this, his mother was someone trustworthy and of good blood, why would her son be anything less?" Chrysta argued. Hugo sent her a thankful glance.

"I wish to take over my mother's role, if it was so important that she could... could put her life on the line for it, I want to live her legacy." Hugo stated, standing firm, his grip tightening on his sword, as if that was the only thing that was saving him from insanity.
