8. Not According To The Plan
This is going to be long, buckle up brochachos :,)
SOFIA AND RYAN RUSHED TO THEIR FRIENDS, MAINY EVELYN.(they are just a small little family.)
"You flung that thing like a hot wheel!" Dustin exclaimed, hugging Mike and El.
"Holy shit, what happened to you?" Max exclaimed.
"Oh you know the usual, bullies." Sofia groaned.
"You're gonna get infected." Evelyn noted.
"I'm fine, I'm fine." Sofia brushed it off.
"Lucas?" Erica questioned.
"What are you doing here?" Lucas exclaimed.
"Ask them." Erica pointed pointed at Steve and Robin. "It's their fault."
"Totally true, it's absolutely our fault." Steve agreed.
"I don't understand what happened to that car." Robin exclaimed.
"El has superpowers," Dustin answered.
"So does Sofia," Ryan added.
"I'm sorry?" Robin grew confused.
"Superpowers, she threw it with her mind. Cmon, catch up." Steve told Robin.
"That's El?" Erica asked.
"Who's El?" Robin asked again.
"I'm sorry, who are you?" Nancy asked.
"I'm Robin, I work with Steve." Robin answered.
"She cracked the top secret code." Dustin explained.
"I helped," Sofia mumbled.
"Yeah, which is how we found out about the russians." Steve finished.
"Russians, wait what russians?" Jonathan asked.
"The russians!" Steve exclaimed, gesturing to their dead bodies.
"Those were russians?" Max asked.
"Some of them." Erica answered.
"What are you talking about?" Lucas asked.
"What are Russians doing in Hawkins? Is that how you got shot?" Evelyn asked.
"Don't know," Ryan answered.
"Yeah and we most certainly do not care." Sofia finished.
"Didn't you hear our code red?" Dustin asked.
"Yeah, couldn't understand what you were saying." Mike answered.
"Goddamm low battery," Dustin muttered.
"How many times do I have to tell you with the low battery?" Steve asked.
"Well, everything worked out, didn't it?" Dustin asked.
"Worked out, we almost died." Erica pointed out.
"Yeah, but we didn't, did we?" Dustin said.
"Steve and Robin got drugged with Truth serum and I got shot," Sofia exclaimed. "How do you call that worked out?!?"
El began to go on her own away from the group, their voices began to slip away from her mind.
El collapses to the ground, everyone rushed towards her.
Mike rushed to her side. "El! El!"
"What's wrong with her?" Erica asked, Sofia shushed her.
"What's wrong?" Mike asked.
"My leg, my leg," El panted.
"Her leg, okay." Jonathan muttered.
Jonathan and Nancy unwrapped the bandages on her leg and the others looked in disgust, even more so when something moved inside of her.
Jonathan ran to the nearest food place in the mall and grabbed some gloves, a knife, and a spoon.
He burned the knife slightly before coming back.
"Hey hey, stay awake, stay awake." Mike told El. "Let's get her on this side, this side."
Mike, Dustin, Steve, and Nancy moved El.
"You know, it's not actually that bad. There was a... the goalie on my soccer team, Beth Wildfire. This other girl slid into her leg, and the bone came out of her knee, six inches or something. It was insane." Robin began to ramble.
"Robin." Steve called.
"Yeah?" She looked at him.
"You're not helping," He says.
"I'm sorry," Robin muttered, Sofia smiled softly at her.
Jonathan came running back with his materials.
"Okay, all right, el?" Jonathan looked at her. "This is gonna hurt like hell, okay?"
"Okay," El sobs.
"Need you to stay real still. Here, you're gonna want to bite down on this, okay?" Jonathan put his gloves on and gave Mike the spoon.
Jonathan held the knife over El's leg and looked up, waiting for the okay.
"Do it," Mike said.
And with that, Jonathan cut into El's leg, screamed, and the spoon muffled the sound, and everyone could only watch with sad eyes.
Jonathan took a shaky breath as he inserted two fingers into her wound in search of the flesh of the mind flayer that was still in El.(Props to Jonathan cause I could never)
El groaned. "Stop, I can do it. I can do it."
Nancy pushed Jonathan's hand aside for El.
"Are you sure?" Sofia asked. "I can do it for you, El."
El took ahold of Sofia's hand and held it tight. "I can do it." She confirmed.
Sofia nodded in encouragement, El sat up and lifted her arm and focused.
She breathed heavy before she began to wail, using more of her power. She screamed and screamed, causing the glass behind them to shatter as she kept on screaming.
Finally, she got it out of her body and threw it across the mall floor with so much force.
"You did so good," Sofia whispered in her ear.
The flesh began to crawl its way away from them before getting stepped on by none other than Jim Hopper and he didn't come alone.
"The mind flayer, it built this monster in Hawkins to stop El, to kill her and pave a way into our world." Mike started to explain.
"And it almost did. That was just one tiny piece of it." Nancy finished.
"How big is this thing?" Hopper asks.
"It's big," Jonathan murmurs. "Thirty feet, at least."
"Yeah," Lucas agreed. It sorta destroyed your cabin. Sorry."
"Okay, so, just to be clear. This big fleshy spider thing that hurt El, it's some kind of gigantic weapon?" Steve asked.
"Yes." Nancy answered.
"But instead of, like, screws, and metal, the mind flayer made its weapon with melted flesh." Steve explained.
"Yes, exactly." Nancy said.
"Yeah, okay. I'm just making sure." Steve muttered.
"Wait," Sofia said. Everyone turned to look at her. "So, this mind flayer wants to absolutely kill all of humanity?"
"Yeah," Jonathan answered.
"But in order to do that, it has to kill us first right?" Sofia asked.
"You and El yeah," Lucas answered.
"But we're not letting that happen." Ryan butted in.
"That won't happen," Evelyn muttered.
"Won't," El repeated.
"Are we sure this thing is still out there, still alive?" Joyce asked.
"El beat the shit out of it, but yeah, it's still alive." Max answered.
"But if we close the gate again," Will trailed off.
"We cut the brain off the body." Max carried on Will's words.
"And kill it. Theoretically." Lucas finished the sentence.
"Yoohoo! Yoohoo!" Murray began to make his way to the group with papers in his hands.
"Okay, this is what Alexei called "the hub". Now, the hub takes us to the vault room." Murray explained.
"Okay, where's the gate?" Hopper asked.
"Right here." Murray pointed on the map. "I don't know the scale on this, but I think it's fairly close to the vault room, maybe 50 feet or so." Murray estimated.
"More like 500," Erica exclaimed. "What, you're gonna waltz in like it's commie Disneyland or something?"
"I'm sorry, who are you?" Murray asked.
"Erica Sinclair. Who are you?" Erica questioned back.
"Murray... Bauman." He answered.
"Well listen Mr. Bunman, I'm not trying to tell you how to do things but I've been down in that shithole for 24 hours and with all due respect you do what this man tells you, you're all gonna die." Erica explained.
"I'm sorry why is this four year old speaking to me?" Murray exclaimed.
"Um I'm ten you bald bastard." Erica corrected.
Sofia chuckled, Ryan glanced down that started as a scold turned into a light-hearted smile.
"Erica!" Lucas scolded.
"Just the facts." She argued.
"She's right. You're all gonna die, but you don't have to. Excuse me." Dustin agreed. "Sorry, may I?"
"Please!" Murray exaggerated.
Ryan joined his brother at the table and looked to see what he was doing.
"This map looks like hell. Who made it?" Ryan muttered.
"It clearly wasn't Will," Dustin whispered.
John cleared his throat.
"Okay, see this room here? This is a storage facility." Dustin circled the spot. "There's a hatch in here that feeds into their underground ventilation system." He drew on the map once more. "That will lead you to the base of their weapon. It's a bit of a maze down there, but between me, Ryan, and Erica, we can show you the way." Dustin told the adults.
"You can show us the way?" Hopper asked.
"Don't worry, you can do all the fighting and dangerous hero shit, and we'll just be your... navigators." Dustin tried to convince the chief.
"No." Hopper spoke then shrugged. "Nope."
Sofia went and sat on the counter of "Hot Sam." Next to Robin, Steve took his leave and went somewhere else, made his way to Nancy and Jonathan.
"Hey," Sofia whispered.
"Hey," Robin said back.
"How are you feeling?" Sofia asked.
"I feel great," Robin chuckled.
"You knew what I meant." Sofia brushed her hand against hers, Robin's breath hitched. "If you don't want to talk about it-"
"It's just all so confusing," Robin blurted out. "All of this, I mean you have superpowers! I always thought Hawkins was so boring and all of this is just strange, so very strange."
"It's okay," Sofia said.
"How did you do it?" Robin asked.
"Do what?" Sofia looked at her.
"Save the world twice I mean, how did you cope with all of this?" Robin explained.
"I never really thought about it as much," Sofia answered honestly. "It's just normal to me at this point."
"Well normal people don't live their life saving the world every year." Robin chuckled.
"And what do normal people do?" Sofia asked.
"They hang out, go to the movies, they go on dates, they watch horrible movies and laugh about it till their stomach hurts, they just live their life as normal as they can." Robin rambled.
"Can we do that?" Sofia asked.
"Do what?" Robin snapped her head to look at Sofia.
"Hang out, go to movies and dates," Sofia explained.
Robin's face began to flush. "You want to go on a date... with me?"
"You're nice to be around." Sofia smiled.
"Oh, okay okay." Robin repeated.
"Movie date at my house next week?" Sofia suggested.
"Oh uh sure, I would love to!" Robin exclaimed. "Sorry."
Sofia linked their pinkies together. "It's okay."
The two girls smiled at each other, in their own bubble, far away from this world.
"Hey, heads up. You can navigate, just from someplace safe." Hopper tossed Dustin a radio.
"It's not that simple," Dustin told him.
"The signal won't reach." Erica added.
"500 feet is alot you know," Ryan finished.
"Not with this. You need something with a high enough frequency band to relay with Russians' radio tower." Dustin began to explain. "But for that to work, you need someone who has seen their comms room and has access to a super-powered handcrafted radio tower, one preferably already suited at the highest point in Hawkins. Oh, wait, that's me. If you want us to navigate, you got us but we need a headstart... and a car." Dustin finished.
"Oh, man, now this... this is what I'm talking about!" Steve exclaimed.
"Toddfather?" Robin whispered to Dustin.
"Oh, screw Todd! Steve's her daddy now." He proclaimed.
"Did you just talk about yourself in the third person?" Robin asked.
"Did he just call himself daddy?" Erica asked.
"Why is he the one driving?" Ryan mumbled as he got in the car.
"All right, where are we going?" Steve asked.
"Weathertop." Dustin answered.
"Weather what?" Steve asked.
"Just drive." Dustin replied.
"Okay, Jesus." Steve muttered.
The five kids drove off in the night while the others were about to make their way to Murray's house.
Evelyn was talking to their dad, Sofia didn't know what it was about, but she could tell it was emotional based on the hug they shared.
"My battery is low," El spoke up. "But it will recharge."
"I know it will, kid." Hopper told her. "I know."
"I can fight," El stated.
"Better than any of us." Hopper agreed. "But right now, I need you safe. This thing is after you, it's not after me. Do you understand?" El didn't reply, only looked ahead. "Hey... I need you to understand."
El looked at Hopper and nodded, signaling that she understood.
"Okay," Hopper nodded.
"Hey," Mike approached them. "We should probably go."
Hopped sighed for a moment, El quickly hugged him, and he hugged her back. Mike and Max both helped El up, and they began to walk away.
"Mike," Hopper called out. Mike turned around. "Be careful." Mike nodded.
The gang began to leave when Hopper called Sofia's name. She turned to face him, and he beckons her to come over.
"Sofia," Hopper looked at her.
"I'll protect El. It's fine, I got it." Sofia began to ramble.
"I know you will," Hopper cut her off. "But you need to protect yourself too."
Sofia's look softened as she processed his words.
"Promise me that," Hopper looked at her sternly.
"I don't make promises I can't keep." Sofia smiled sadly.
Hopper smiled softly at her.
Sofia turned around and made her way to the group.
They made their way outside and got in the car, Nancy turned the key, but it wouldn't start.
"What's wrong?" Jonathan asked.
"I don't..." Nancy trailed off. "I don't know."
Nancy tried again and it still wouldn't work.
"You can't be serious. Come on!" Nancy yelled.
"Didn't your mom just buy this car?" Lucas asked.
"Yes, I'm sure it's fine." Nancy answered.
"Did you leave the lights on?" Will asked.
"No." Nancy answered.
"Do we have gas?" Lucas asked.
"Yes!" Nancy snapped. "Come on!"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa," Jonathan murmurs. "Pop the hood." He exited the car, Nancy followed.
"What the hell?" Jonathan looked in disbelief.
"What?" Nancy asked.
"The ignition cable's gone." Jonathan explained.
A car roared in the empty parking lot, getting their attention, lights flashing. It was Billy, and he was staring at them with rage.
"Back in the mall!" Nancy exclaimed.
"Cmon go, go, go!" Jonathan exclaimed as they ran back inside the mall.
Meanwhile, the music from the toddfather faded in the air as Steve kept on driving.
"Jesus, how far is this place, man?" Steve asked.
"Relax, we're almost there." Dustin replied.
"Suzie must be pretty special, huh?" Robin spoke. "I mean, you built this thing and lugged it all the way in the middle of nowhere just to talk to her?"
"I mean, nobody's scientifically perfect, but Suzie's about as close to being perfect as any human could possibly be." Dustin rambled.
"Well, I wouldn't say all that," Ryan added, Dustin glared at him, which made him shut up instantly.
"She sound made up to me. She sound made up to you?" Erica asked Steve, who hesitated with his answer. Something that Dustin noticed.
"Why are you hesitating, Steve?" Dustin asked.
"I'm not, I'm not!" Steve exclaimed. "I think she sounds real. You know, totally, absolutely real."
"Turn left," Dustin told Steve.
"There's no road here." Steve told Dustin, stating the obvious.
"Turn left now!" Dustin exclaimed.
"Bossy much?" Ryan rolled his eyes.
Steve took a sharp left, freaking everyone out.
"Give a warning first, Harrington!" Ryan exclaimed.
"Jesus Henderson, where are we going?" Steve asked.
"Up!' Dustin exclaimed.
"We're not gonna make it!" Robin exclaims.
"Yes, we are. Come on, baby. Come on, baby!" Steve encouraged the car.
The car began to splutter and slow down.
"Guess the Toddfather has its limitations." Robin looked at Steve.
The gang got out of the car and began to make their way up the hill.
"Scoop troops, do you copy?" Mike's voice was heard on the radio. "Scoops Troop, do you copy?" Mike repeated. "Scoops Troop, I repeat. Do you copy? We're trapped in the mall and in need of emergency transportation."
Lucas was testing out his wrist rocket, El simply stood, feeling helpless.
A million of thoughts were going through Sofia's head as Nancy picked up a gun from one of the dead Russians.
"You're gonna kill him, aren't you?" Max asked, sadness evident in her voice as her eyes flickered between Sofia and Nancy.
"This is just a precaution, okay?" Nancy reassures her, Max looked at Sofia, who nodded in agreement.
"And not just against Billy. If he knows we're here, so does the Mind Flayer." Will told her.
Nancy looked over at the car El had thrown earlier. "No chance that thing will drive, right?" Nancy joked.
"We don't need it to drive," Jonathan explained. "We just need the ignition cable."
The group struggled to lift the car. It was heavy, very heavy.
"Push!" Jonathan exclaimed.
"What does it look like we're doing, Jonathan?" Sofia huffed. "Why didn't you guys just let me use my powers?"
"You need to save your energy!" Evelyn exclaimed.
The group failed to lift the car.
"Let me try." El suggested.
"El," Mike panted.
"I can do it." El sighed.
The group knew they couldn't argue with El. They decided to let her try.
El held her arm out as she focused on the car. Her breathing grew heavier and heavier, the car barely moving in response.
"El." Sofia hummed.
El lowered her arm and huffed in disappointment.
"Wait, guys, I got it." Mike spoke up.
The group held the stools and pushed the chair with the added strength.
"All right now, all the way. Ready?" Jonathan told the group. "Three, two, one, go!"
The group(minus El) was able to push the car on the ground successfully.
"Told you, Physics." Mike panted.
"You're not even in physics yet," Sofia commented.
"What is she doing?" Max asked.
Mike, Max, and Sofia shared a look before heading to El, who was rummaging through the trash.
"Do you see it?" Nancy asked.
"I don't know," Jonathan answers. "It should be right here."
"Don't tell me we did all that work for nothing!" Evelyn exaggerated.
Will felt goosebumps on his neck and slowly turned around, Max heard a distant rumble and slowly looked up, her eyes widening.
"Mike," She whispered, which got his attention, causing him to look up as well.
Mike gasped. "Nancy!" He yelled. "El, come on." The kids ran to hide.
The mind flayer broke through the glass and entered the mall.
Meanwhile, at the weathertop. Steve noticed something happening back at the mall while the others were talking.
"Hey guys," Steve called out.
Ryan instantly made his way to Steve, and Ryan's eyes widened.
"Oh no," He muttered.
"Griswold family, this is the Scoops Troop! Please confirm your safety!" Dustin yelled into the radio.
They received a roar in reply, making them more worried.
"Griswold family, this is the scoop troops. Please confirm your safety." Dustin repeated.
The Griswold family in question stayed silent in fear, not daring to move or to answer the radio.
The only thing heard was their shallow breaths and the mind flayer roars and shrieking.
"Griswold family, do you copy?" Dustin asked.
"Well, clearly they don't, Dustin!" Ryan exclaimed. "They're clearly in danger."
Steve got up and ran to the car, Ryan following closely behind.
"Where are you going?" Erica asked them.
"To get them the hell outta there!" Steve exclaimed.
Robin ran down the hill as well, not before getting a radio from Dustin.
The mind flayer roamed the mall in search of El. It roared once more.
Mike looked up and saw the mind flayer was looking away from them. He peaked his head back down.
"It's turned away. If we go up the stairs now, we'll make it." Mike whispered to them.
"No way, not with El's leg." Max disapproved of the idea.
"We have to try." Mike argued.
"There's another way... to get out." El spoke up. "Through the gap."
Mike peaked his head out again before coming back down.
"Okay, now." Mike whispered.
Sofia, Mike, Max, and El ran to the gap, knocking into something, causing the mind flayer to go in their direction.
The mind flayer loomed over the gap, snarling. It picked up a mannequin wearing the same clothes as El and roared, once it realized it wasn't her. It was thrown across the store, startling the four teens. The mind flayer continued to search for El in the Gap.
Suddenly, a balloon popped, getting the mind flayers' attention. Both groups rushed out of the mall rapidly.
