3 | picking petals
Bree was lying in a flowery field, blonde tresses fanned out all around her. The afternoon sun shone down on the peaceful clearing while the breeziness of the summer weather made the blades of grass rustle and sway as the wind kept them cool. The soft putter of the river flowing filled the silent air, making the clearing seem like it was a whole other world. Bree came here often, especially on nice days, so she could just stare at the sky for hours and hours without interruption. Every time her brain felt too cluttered to function she came here to clear her mind and ponder for a while, sometimes voicing her thoughts and sometimes staying silent the whole time. She felt the sun's rays beaming down on her, the warmth and comfort of her surroundings making her feel ever so peaceful. She let out a breath of air and closed her eyes shut, basking in the glow.
That was until she heard the rustle of grass behind her and she felt a flower petal being dropped on her nose.
Her eyes opened with a start and she sad up and glanced around with startled eyes, only to land on a blue-eyed boy sitting right beside her. "Conner!" She punched her now-chuckling boyfriend in the shoulder. "You scared me!" She scolded him, but he just flashed her a cheeky smile.
"Sorry," He blushed. "You just look so cute when you're sleeping."
"So you woke me up?"
"...Yeah."
"But that doesn't make any sense, if you thought I was cute than why would you ruin it?"
Conner smiled and shrugged. "You're even cuter when you're mad," He said matter-of-factly.
Bree rolled her eyes and nudged Conner playfully. "If you say so," She laughed while resting her head on Conner's shoulder, Conner putting his arm around her shoulders in response.
Conner smiled and kissed her head. "Fancy meeting you here, huh?" He joked.
Bree giggled at the irony of that statement. Conner and Bree had adopted this place as both of their hideaways when they found it on one of their recent adventures on a rainy day. The two were looking for shelter or a tree to hide under when they found the beautiful willow tree at the gateway to the clearing. Once the rain cleared, they emerged from under the tree and out into the bountiful field, marvelling in the simple beauty of it all. They came here many days to talk or kiss or sometimes even play in the stream, splashing each other with cold water on hot days. Other days they'd just lay in silence, saying nothing and keeping to themselves while enjoying the company of the other. It was their sanctuary, their escape when the rest of the world got too hard. The only thing they needed in this place was each other.
"Yup," Bree said, slipping out of Conner's grip to lie down on her elbows, picking flowers and their petals to pass the time. "Why are you here, anyways?" She asked as she watched a bright yellow petal get carried away by the wind.
Conner adjusted himself so that he was in the same position as Bree; lying down with his back facing up using his elbows for support. He picked a petal and put it in her hair. "I was looking for you, actually." His cheeks tinted ever so slightly when he saw her soft brown eyes light up and her lips upturn to a small smile.
"Really?" She grinned.
"Yeah, really," He chuckled. "You didn't answer my texts so I figured I'd find you here," He said, knowing that this was the only place she would've gone without paying attention to her phone. He plucked another flower and threw a couple more petals into her hair.
"Aww, you know me so well!" Bree beamed. She bumped shoulders with Conner and uprooted another flower, playfully throwing it at him.
"Of course I do, I'm your boyfriend. It's my job," He laughed and threw a flower into her hair again.
Bree's arms grew tired, as did Conner's, so she rolled onto her back like she had been doing before Conner had showed up. Conner moved into a cross-legged position, propping his arms behind him.
Bree laid her head in Conner's lap, her hair spilling over his knees and legs. Conner stared at her for a moment before noticing something unusual about her appearance. "Hey, where's your beanie?" Bree's signature hairstyle had always been a low ponytail and her purple beanie, but lately she'd been wearing her hair down less and less (mostly because Conner played with it so often and he'd always take the elastic out anyways), and her beanie seemed to have an absence as well. This was one of the first times Conner had seen her without it, and he smiled to think that maybe he was one of the only people who had.
"Oh, I just left it at home today," She said casually. But truth be told, Conner's suspicion wasn't wrong. Conner was one of the few people she was comfortable with, particularly because she knew he hadn't fallen for her just because of her looks. He was probably the only person she felt safe with without her beanie on. She took it everywhere and she used to hate her hair, which was why she wore it all the time. Apart from the fact that she liked the beanie, of course. But with Conner it was different. He liked her no matter how she looked.
Conner smiled fondly, running a hand through her hair like he usually did. "Well you look fantastic," He said bashfully.
It was a rare sight to see Bree blush, but nowadays she seemed to be more prone to Conner's compliments than she had been in the past. "Thanks," She said, pink dusting her cheeks.
Conner laughed. "There are flowers in your hair," He remarked.
Bree giggled and shook her head to try and get them out, but it didn't do much.
"Here, let me help." Conner gently took a petal out of her hair and tossed it aside, the first of many others. He combed through Bree's petal-ridden locks and picked out all the flowers and grass that ended up in there, working slowly and carefully to ensure that he wouldn't hurt his girlfriend. It was quite soothing, to be honest.
Bree closed her eyes and relaxed, letting Conner focus on his task at hand. It was charming and endearing to Bree that Conner was so preoccupied with something that wouldn't help him in any way. She settled into her spot and let out a loose breath, letting all her stress vanish along with it. Bree let the lightness of the clearing sink into her while Conner played with her hair, relieved that she could finally just be in the moment without any pressure from anyone or anything around her.
Conner smiled and untangled another stem. Bree had told him about everything going on with her during the past few months before, and it only seemed fitting to give her a break. He remembered her face when she told him about her family issues for the first time; pale, upset and afraid.
But now here she was, eyes closed softly and mouth grinning slightly, looking more at peace than he'd ever seen her before. It made him happy to see her like this. Conner reached for the last couple petals and tossed them out of her hair. "Done!" He reported contently.
Bree looked up at him and smiled. "Thanks, Conner," She said. Since he was done, Bree moved her head off of his lap and flopped back down into the meadow, making herself comfortable amongst the tall grass and colourful flowers. It wasn't long before Conner lay down to join her. Bree turned on her side so she was facing him and his bright blue eyes, and he flashed her a warm smile. She returned it.
Conner chuckled abruptly when he found one last flower in her hair; one he had missed. He reached forward and plucked it out. "Last one, I swear," He joked. His eyes never left hers as he tucked a couple loose strands behind her ear, eventually settling his hand on her cheek.
Bree grinned and shuffled closer to him, their feet now intertwining. Bree picked a petal out of Conner's hair this time, turning the tides on what they had been doing before. A mocking grin spread across her face. "Last one, I swear," She mimicked and winked.
Before she knew it, Conner was much closer, and before she knew it, she felt his lips touch hers.
Conner kissed her sweetly in the flowery field, and Bree kissed back. His hands were still in her hair, and hers were around his neck. They may have only been sixteen, but they both knew that it was a blissful moment that they'd want to relive for the rest of their lives.
Lying there in the flower-filled field, kissing while sun-kissed, and picking petals until the day grew dark.
