Introduction

Why hello there,
I don't believe we've met. I'm N.G.Brier/NgoziGardenia, but you can call me N.

If you've clicked into this book, you're either curious or coming in hopes of improving your critique abilities. I commend you for your willingness to advance in the critique field. Not only will you be able to help others with this added knowledge, but you will be able to additionally apply it to your own writing.

The fun thing about critique is that when you do it well, you often learn from the experience just as much as the person you are giving criticism. This is eye-opening, and time and time again, I have found that my own writing has improved the most from receiving and giving critique in unison.

A little about myself: I have been writing since I was eight years old, but did not take it seriously until I turned 18. Since then, I have attended three writing conferences, two college creative writing courses, and read more books on writing than I care to admit. If I'm completely honest, writing is both a passion, and an addiction for me. As a perfectionist, it's difficult to ever be fully satisfied with my work, but I am taking steps forward into improving that state of mind.

I've been on wattpad actively for three years now, participating as a judge in competitions, and in book clubs that involve intense levels of criticism.

Why do I tell you this? Well, it's not to brag, as that's not something I condone. This is simply to let you know my background, because there are so many: "I CAN MAKE YOUR BOOK GOOD", books on wattpad that are written by inexperienced authors who to be frank, have no idea what they are talking about. I assure you, I am not one of those.

Within this book, there will be sections on characterization, grammar, punctuation, writing style, personal opinions, plot, pacing,  and everything I've learned in my years of studying and partaking in the writing craft. But, I do have one disclaimer: commas are not my specialty. If you see any errors in this regard, which I admit to struggling with, let me know ;)

Without further ado: welcome to "So You Want To Be A Judge": A comprehensive guide on critique and wattpad award judging.

We're all learning while we continue on our writing journey, and much like yourselves, I too have much to learn. I hope the knowledge I have gathered in my travels will aid you on your own.

If you have an questions on specific sections, ask them! This is a learning guide, I want you to leave as informed as possible and without confusion.

I look forward to the time we'll spend learning together,

-N
