Louise’s POV
Walking into detention for the second day running, I couldn’t help but already feel like it was a complete waste of time. What is this going to solve? If I punch someone what are they going to do? Extend my detention? I’ve already got this for a year! How is that even legal?!
“Louise.” David acknowledged me as I walked in the room. I looked over to see him sitting on his own.
“Where are Josh and Frank?” I asked almost instantly.
“How would I know? They’re not my friends…” He laughed as he stretched out and put his feet on the table. There was a small pause before he carried on. “So you’re here because you punched both of them?”
“Yeah.” I let out a small laugh. “I nearly broke Frank’s nose. Josh got hit about five minutes later by Conor…”
“Those guys…” He shook his head. “What a waste of time…”
“You got that right!” I nodded enthusiastically. I began to walk to the seat I was sitting at yesterday.
“Hey. Why don’t you sit over here?” He pointed to a chair close to him. “I think we got off on the wrong foot yesterday… We’ve got a year of each other’s company!” He gave me a small wink. Don’t ask me why, but I walked straight over there and sat down with one table between us.
“A year of this, huh?” I rolled my eyes. “I’m bored of it already!” I pulled out the book I attempted to read yesterday and put it on the table.
“You gonna be reading that book for a year?” He gazed over to it.
“Well I only managed one sentence yesterday so you never know it could take me that long… Maybe even longer!” I let out a small laugh.
“You know, I really can’t see how a girl like you could be in here for getting into fights…” His voice suddenly became softer and he looked into my eyes.
“A girl like me?” I questioned. Where was he going with this?
“Well you seem so nice and gentle, kind and happy, you know? Not like Conor; he looks like a fighting kind of man.” David shrugged.
“Ah, well thanks I guess! But it just goes to show you can’t judge a book by its cover!” I smiled.
“And those two made you sound like some sort of maniac!” He laughed. “Like you just pounced at them for no reason and that’s why they didn’t stand a chance…” I shook my head.
“What happened on those two days are some of my best memories… We’d fought before so they knew I was going to get them…” I looked to the floor. “But I just got there first.”
“That bruise on your face…?” David asked gently, in case there was a horrific story attached to it.
“Oh that was Josh. He wanted his revenge for punching him… When we were on the field?” I asked, wondering if he was one of the onlookers.
“Oh I heard that, but I didn’t crowd round like everyone does… I went and sat with my mates.”
“Well Josh threw mud at us so I punched him, he finally got a punch in but then Conor came and finished him off for me… Split his lip.” I smiled at the memory.
“Guys shouldn’t hit girls!” David said, shocked at hearing of Josh’s antics. “What an ass… Who even tries to get in a fight with a girl anyway? I’m glad you hit him… Teach him a lesson eh?” He folded his arms across his chest.
“Well I wish he had learnt his lesson, but I don’t think he will. Frank won’t either. How’s your head after that anyway?” I asked, remembering Frank had pushed him off his chair yesterday.
“Oh I’m fine! The impact sounded worse than it was to be honest. But thanks for running to my aid…” He said sarcastically, sticking his tongue out.
“What was I going to do? You only fell off a chair!” I laughed. For a moment we just laughed, I kind of enjoyed his company. He made me feel like I was a decent person to talk with, rather than just that smart girl no one spoke to at school. He was more popular than me but not to the extreme of Josh and Conor.
“Aww David, you making friends?” Josh said patronisingly.
“Louise, you like to move on quick!” Frank said, nasally. I rolled my eyes and shook my head. David let out a small laugh.
“Guys… Enough… Who are you trying to impress?” David scowled at them.
“We’re not here to impress anyone…” Frank crossed his arms as they walked towards us. Again I prayed for Conor or whichever teacher it was today to walk in right now and save us… “Why would we want to impress you guys?”
“Shut up Frank.” Josh shot an evil glare at him.
“Yeah, control your dog, Josh.” David raised his eyebrow. Josh shook his head but Frank’s fists tightened and his jaw clenched.
“Frank!” I attracted his attention, his fists loosened. “Leave it, man, he isn’t worth the energy.” I turned and looked him up and down. “Trust me.” David looked over to me taken aback by my comment. Why are boys so stupid? I was blatantly saving his arse!
“Ah, we’re all friends now are we?” Conor strolled into the room with a smug look on his face. “We all getting on now?”
“Actually Frank was about to have a fight with David…” I stated dispassionately. Frank looked over at me, confused.
“He was?” I merely rolled my eyes. Conor walked towards us and sat at the desk in between David and I, the smell of his cologne filling my nostrils. My heart was beating fast. He was actually choosing to sit next to me! Frank and Josh still stood in front of our desks waiting for one of us to say something that would give them a reason to start a fight. I picked my book up and for the millionth time read the same sentence I had yesterday. ‘I don’t know what made me think he loved me, but I knew he did. The way he looked at me made me feel amazing.’ Yes I know, now let’s please read on! I moved onto the next line of the book and began reading; soon I had turned the page and another and another. Finally! It was finally quiet enough to-
“Louise!” I was bought out of my thoughts and looked to my left where all four of the boys were fighting. How did I miss that? Immediately I threw my book on the table and ran towards the bundle. David looked to be squashed at the bottom of this bundle; Frank and Josh hitting him between trying to get rid of Conor.
“For goodness sake…” I sighed as I jumped onto Josh’s back and wrapped my arms over his head to cover his eyes so he couldn’t see. I leant backwards quickly and he stumbled backwards with me, allowing Conor to pull Frank away from David. David scrambled to stand up and moved away from the fighting, his back against the wall of the hall.
“Get off me!” Josh shouted, scratching at my hands. I wasn’t even bothered that this would have been the third time I’d fought with Josh, I was more bothered about the landing I’m going to have if he managed to make me let go…
“Alright! Alright, I give up!” Frank shouted. I looked over to see Conor had him in a headlock he was not going to escape from. I turned my head back round just in time to see Josh’s head swinging back to head-butt me, which I might add he totally succeeded with and I fell off of him onto a table, which folded up under the weight and fell to the floor.
“Shit!” I heard David shout as he ran over to me and bent down next to me. “Louise, are you ok?” I rolled over onto my side and put my hand over my nose and mouth.
“That’s what you get! Now you know how it feels!” Josh cackled with his arm round Frank, who was cackling as much as he could have after being choked by Conor.
“Louise, you alright?” Conor asked me as he grabbed one arm and David grabbed the other. They helped me to stand up but that only made me feel dizzier. When people spoke to me it sounded like I was in a bubble, a high pitched whistling noise was constant and I felt off balance. I knew what was going to happen now… I was going to pass out.
