On You
This is the argument prompt you asked for. Idk if you wanted smut, Catbubs.
It was a quiet evening, with the sun still hanging over the horizon. It was peacefully warm, not too hot and not too cold.
"What do you want to eat tonight, Ni-Ni?" Steven said, throwing away the burnt lasagna he had attempted to cook.
Connie sighed and looked up from her book. "I dunno, you pick. I'm down for whatever."
"How about Mexican?"
"I don't like Mexican, remember?"
Steven nodded his recollection of the fact. "Okay, what about Chinese?"
"Gives me heartburn. Plus, most of them are closed by now." She was lying back on the couch now, staring at the ceiling with irritation. "Anything but those two."
"Okay, burgers?"
"And that. That also sounds gross. They're too greasy."
Steven growled and leaned against the counter. "Then YOU pick! I can't think of anything else!"
"I said you could pick, Steven. Don't patronize me." She grumbled.
"Pizza."
"Are you trying to sound stupid? Of course not! I don't want greasy food remember?"
The hybrid pulled his hair a little as he internally screamed. Lately she was so damn picky he could hardly stand it. Normally she was down for whatever. And now she was getting on his last nerve.
"Fine. No greasy food. Italian." He said through gritted teeth.
"Okay first of all, ew. Second of all, drop the tone. You know how sensitive my stomach has been."
"Oh COME on!" He erupted. "I'm trying to make you happy. You said I could pick whatever! So I picked but every little thing I've picked you shot down faster than I could think them!"
"Could you not yell at me? YOU burnt the lasagna, not me! That's what I wanted!" She nipped.
"Lasagna IS italian food!" He couldn't believe it. It's like she was purposely pissing him off. "I'm sorry okay?"
"You don't sound very sorry!!" Connie stood up and they glared at each other, tempers flaring high. "If you had just tried harder instead of slacking off--"
"I AM TRYING!" Steven smashed his fist through the cabinet and Connie stomped up to him.
"Get back to me on dinner when you can control your temper!" She spat.
"Connie," He grabbed her arm gently, then tighter as she tried to escape his grasp. "Connie."
"What?" She said, angry tears filling her eyes.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't let myself get out of control like that. I'm just... I'm trying to make you happy. I get a little carried away when I feel like I can't do that." He held her closely and kissed her forehead.
She didn't say anything, but nodded her forgiveness.
"You feel a little better now?"
"Yeah." She looked up at him and nuzzled into his chest.
"Yeah? That's good. I have an idea." He put her out to arms length and smiled at her. "How about ice cream for dinner?"
Connie smiled and nodded, wiping away the remaining tears. "Okay, that sounds nice."
Steven chuckled as he pressed a hand against the cupboard and it sealed and refinished itself. "Good as new."
"I didn't know you could do that. I thought you could only use your powers for living things, like gems and plants."
"I dunno, it's something I picked up awhile ago. Wood used to be a tree, I guess."
Connie snorted and pulled out the bowls and ice cream scooper. "Not sure that's how it works Steven. Maybe we need to get you reevaluated. Root beer too?"
"Hm. Maybe to reevaluation, yes to root beer. Always a yes to root beer."
Connie chuckled and shot him a look, which he deflected with a charming wink. They sat down and ate their ice cream quietly, still a bit shaken from their argument.
"I think we should both go in to see a doctor."
Connie froze and looked at him in worry. "Why would we need to do that?"
Steven shrugged. "I dunno. Isn't there a yearly check up thingy?"
"You can do a yearly check up, but it wont kill you to skip one."
Steven smiled, his suspicions seeming more and more like truth. "Yeah. Okay."
