Chapter 31

Promise

T.A.2510

Rivendell

I woke up gasping for air, frantically looking around. I was in my room. I sighed in relief.

"Is it always like that?"

I looked and saw Grandma standing at my door way.

"Sometimes. How long was I out?"

"You just slept over night, and most of the day. It's midday now." She replied, making her way to my beside. She then sat beside me.

"You are still welcome to come with us to Lothlóríen."

"Thank you, but I believe she does not want me there. Are Elladan an Elrohir still planning to-"

"Find some of the Rangers? Yes."

I nodded.

"When are you leaving?"

"Soon."

~~~
I walked through the halls with books in my hands. Some were Naneths' writings. I was heading back to my chambers, when I heard voices. Clear as day.
"This is all her fault!" Arwens' voice shouted.
"Arwen, you're over reacting." Elladan said.
"Am I? If the other one was here, she would not! Then none of this would have happened!"
"Arwen, clam down before you regret saying something." Elrohir replied.
To bad they didn't know, she already did.
~~~

I flipped through the pages of Naneths' journal. Till I stopped and read.

It has been awhile since I last wrote anything. We have just arrived Rivendell. I along with my parents were greeted, by the Lord of Rivendell himself.

Mother said his name is Elrond. A stunning elf, he was, his brown eyes never left my blue ones, as he greeted us.

An elf, Lindir, then showed us where we would be staying. When I looked behind me, I found him still starring at me, as I was at him.

Later I found myself walking around, in the gardens, so far one of my favorite places here.

As I continued to explore the gardens, I found someone watching me, with a smile on his face. Lord Elrond introduced himself personally, as did I, we then talked for hours.

And tonight, when I go to sleep, I'll be thinking of him.

- Celebrían-

I brushed my fingers over her delicate penmanship. I miss her so much. Just as I was about to turn the page, the sound of horses neighing, making me stop reading.

(Maybe they are about to leave?)

I took a deep breath, and walked out my door. My hands rested on the handrails, as I looked over the courtyard.

Five horses, six figures. Easily hearing their conversation

"Stay safe, and listen to your Grandparents."

"Of course, 'Ada.'"

I noticed Grandma looking my way. I just gave her a half smile. Then turned my attention to Elladan and Elrohir.

"Be safe, my sons."

"We will." They replied.

"And I'll make sure Elrohir does not get any trouble."

"And, I'll make sure Elladan, does not hurt himself."

I smiled, a genuine smile. Those two are going to need all the prayers, they can get.

The sun started to set, as five horses went in two different directions. Only then did I see Ada glancing my way. I ignored eye contact, walking back into my room.

My back lend against the door, closing it. I pondered on what Arwen said earlier.

(There was one before me?) I thought.

I quickly walked back to my desk, flipping through Naneths' journal, I stopped when I saw, words that caught my eyes. I looked at the date then continued to read the passage.

Today I have the most joyous news. I write this knowing that in twelve months, I will have four children.

Elrond is most excited, along with my children. Having another elf to play with. I do hope for a girl, Arwen hopes for the same.

Elladan, and Elrohir want someone to teach.

I will write again.

- Celebrían -

I turned two pages over, and no longer saw happiness in her words, they were depressing.

Three weeks.

I never told anyone, not even Elrond. I have not been feeling well the past few days. I just brushed it off though.

Now, I regret it.-

I saw the tear stains on the parchment. As I continued to read.

-I lost the child.

I've not left my room, for the past few days. Everyone is worried, especially my husband.

I do not think I could ever bring another child into this world, nor do I ever want to.

- Celebrían-

I closed the journal, realizing the truth.

Just then a knock came, I turned to the door, and answered.

"Come in."

Ada walked in, as I turned back to my desk, not able to look him in the eyes.

"Lìvia?" He dragged, making his way to me, sitting on my bed. "Are you alright?"

I didn't answer. I just starred at nothing, as tears formed in my eyes.

"Lìvia?" He asked again.

"Am I a mistake?" I asked, as they fell down.

I could tell Ada was surprised at my question, which he did not take long to answer.

"No, you are not, Lìvia. Where did you get that idea?"

"If the other one had lived. Would I still be here?" I asked, ignoring his question.

"Yes." He replied immediately. I looked at him, in disbelief. "Yes, because I believe you are the other one."

"Then why-"

"Middle-earth was not ready for you. That is why."

I gave him a reassuring smile.

"Now. How about we go to dinner?"

I nodded, as we left for dinner.

~~~
Dinner of course was in silence. At least this time I ate more. After we finished, Ada spoke.
"See you in the morning."
"Promise?"
"Promise." He repeated, kissing my forehead, and left.
I headed back to my room, but not before noticing Lindir and Erestor, speaking in hush voices.
But for me, no one can whisper and I not hear it. I quickly passed them, turning the corner, as they continued to whisper.
"Do you believe she is gone because of her?"
"Erestor, that is absurd. After all of this, how could you? How could you blame her?"
"I was only asking your opinion, Lindir."
"Forgive me. This is still all new, to me."
Is Lindir trying to flirt? Oh, Lindir, wait till Glorfindel hears about this.
"As for me. I miss her as well."
It was quite, till I heard footsteps walking away.
"Erestor."
"Yes?"
"If it is not much trouble, maybe we could..-"
"Yes."
"Never mind, it was nothing."
I could hear the disappointment in her voice.
"Alright."
As her footsteps disappeared, I heard Lindir let out a deep sigh, as I walked back to my room.
Once I closed the door behind me, I collapsed on my bed, letting sleep take me.
~~~

Morning came, I went to breakfast expecting Ada to be there. Only he was not.

I knew his promise was too good, to be true.

I ate quickly and headed back to my room.

Lunch came around, I went to the Dinning Hall. Only to be eating alone. Again.

Then when dinner came, I was just hoping he would show up. Only to be disappointed, again.

~~~
The next day, it was the same. He never showed up.
I knew he fell. Wanting to hide from the world, not wanting to deal with anything or anyone in it.
I however could not do that. Everything here reminded me of Naneth, Arwen, my brothers, and Ada.
The good memories, my mistakes...
After dinner I decided I could no longer stay here.
I have to leave.
I sat down at my desk, writing my letter goodbye.
~~~
