Chapter 9: Speakeasy Fun
We stopped at Edna's table before Marty sighed. "Hey Edna, I got a lead for you" he said.
"Oh? what is it?" she asked.
"A Young Scientist Strands Dog on Courthouse Roof"
"What?" she asked before Marty pointed to Emmett and she ran off to go give him an ear full. I looked to Marty. "Really? Throw Emmett under the bus like that?"
He shrugged before he grabbed a copy of Edna's song from the table.
"Mr. Brown!" she said as she got closer to him.
"Miss Strickland, please. Not now. Can't you see I've got a rather... Delicate situation on my hands at the moment? My trial run.."
"Trial Run?! Public hazard I call it! And I'm sure my editor will agree!" she said as Emmett turned away from her. "This "Scientific enterprise" of yours represents a clear and present danger to public safety."
Without missing a beat as Doc came out of the motel Emmett sighed and looked Edna dead in the eyes "You know what represents a clear and present danger to public safety? Your singing voice!"
I laughed as I heard this and Marty chuckled. "There's no need to get personal, Mr. Brown!"
"Believe me, I've got no intention of "getting personal" with you!" he said as we watched Doc get the DeLorean and help Einey off the roof of the courthouse. "I'm Relieved to hear it! Flying cars! Of all the ridiculous juvenile notions!"
"You mock me, but just imagine a world in which traffic jams and car accidents are a thing of the past!" Emmett said.
"I might be more inclined to listen to you if your maiden voyage hadn't ended in a crash on one roof and a stranded dog on another."
"I'm working on getting him down" he said before Einey ran around the corner and barked. I sighed gently as he was safe and looked at Marty. "I wish I recorded that argument. Comedy gold"
Marty nodded gently as we looked around. We went back to the alley to try and get into the speakeasy. Marty knocked on the door and we saw Matches slide the window of the door open.
"Who said you were worthy?"
"The old gray mare?"
"What will you do if I break your leg?"
"Leggo your eggo?"
"Where were you born?"
"Borneo"
"Welcome to El kid, Sir and Ma'am."
I looked to Marty as we were allowed inside and looked around. Kid came onstage and announced Trixie Trotter. Cueball started to play the piano as she started to sing.
They say I'm crazy, got no sense... but I don't care!
They may or may not mean offense. You see I'm sorta independent. I am my own sup'rintendent. My star is on the ascendant, that's why I don't care! I don't care! What people think of me!
I'm happy go lucky, they say I am plucky, so jolly and carefree! I don't care! I don't care! If I do get the mean and stony stare! If I'm never successful it won't be distressful, 'cause I don't care!
The song ended and I looked to Marty. We went to go talk to her after she got off the stage.
"What's a nice gal like you doing with a guy like Tannen?" Marty asked
"Aw, Kid ain't so bad. He just takes some-"
Kid interrupted "Hey toots, any change you could sing that can-can number? The guys really love the way it shows off your um, assets" he said and I rolled my eyes before shaking my head a little. She shook her head and started talking to us again
"He is a pretty crummy boyfriend, but until my insurance policy checks out, I'm stuck with him."
"Insurance?" I asked.
"Yeah. Look, I may not be the brightest bulb in the marquee, but even I know you don't break up with a creep like Kid without something to keep him from goin' all crazy on you."
I looked to Marty before he shrugged gently. "What's the "Insurance policy" all about?"
"Are you kiddin'? There's only one person I trust with my secrets! But I ain't seen him in weeks."
"You don't mean?" I asked.
"Artie McFly! You know him? Before he took a powder, Artie was tutorin' me in all sorts of stuff. Etiquette, philosophy, accountin'.. he's a regular renaissance man. He even had one of those smart guy professor's pipes, see?" she said before she held up his pipe. We were able to borrow it and we could show that to Einstein so he could track him down.
"I've been secretly workin' on my get out of kid card for weeks now, but Artie's the only one I trust to check my work. Ya can't be too careful when you're dealin' with a creep like Kid, y'know?"
"You can trust me, whataya say? A girl to girl secret?" she looked at me before she shook her head. "No, there's no way you know what I'm going through, you're too young."
I rose a brow. "I don't know Trixie. I've been around the block a few times with my old man." She tilted her head and Marty pretended not to listen.
"I've had my ups and downs with my old man, He's pretty controlling. If I don't clean house to how he wants it, or if I don't do well in school, he'll raise his hand to me, he's been like that since my mother died."
"I'll tell you what, since you two are both so nice. If you can get me to see Artie tonight, I'll go to the police with the dirt I got on him and send his sorry patootie to the big house." she said.
I nodded and looked to Marty before we walked over to Danny. He was pretty drunk when we got to him. Luckily he was one of those poor saps that pour their hearts out to anyone that'll listen. He was starting to tell us about how some space car came out of nowhere and now the chief thinks he's crazy.
We left the speakeasy before Marty looked at me before he grabbed my wrist. "Was what you said about your dad true?" he asked. I nodded slowly. "Marty we have other things to worry about than what goes on at my house. Later, okay?" I asked. He growled but nodded as I looked around.
We saw a streetcar go by with Artie in one of the windows. We left the Alley to go find him. We saw Einstein and showed him the pipe to see if he could get a trail. He did and we followed him into the theater. We came back out with Artie. Doc came out and saw us before they went to the motel to talk. Einstein barked and I knelt down to pet him. "I think there's a big bone in your future when we get home huh boy?" I said before he barked again and I giggled.
I stood and let Einey run back to Emmett before we went to the motel were Doc and Artie were at. "We need to get Artie to see Trixie so they can do the plan to put Kid in jail." Marty said.
"How are we going to bring Artie to Trixie?" Doc asked.
"Uh-uh, no way am I getting anywhere near that place again!" Artie said.
I rubbed my face gently as I mumbled. "Will you do it for a scooby snack?"I asked and Marty nudged me. I shook my head and looked out the window.
We left to the alley and Artie sighed. "I don't know how you talked me into this."
"Just stay back here in the shadows. And don't come out until you see Trixie"
"You're sure I'll be safe here?" he asked.
Doc nodded. "Of course you'll be safe here, we don't want to have- Great Scott!" he said before he ran off down the street,
"Sagan!" We heard before Matches came out and went back inside to find Kid. We went inside and looked around. We told Trixie about Artie being in the alley. "Cover for me Cueball,I'm taking a smoke break" she said before she walked out. Only for Kid to get suspicious and go out after her.
There were a couple gunshots outside and Trixie came back inside. I walked over to Marty before we went inside to see Artie was gone. Kid came out from the shadows and told us how he saw Artie out in the shadows. He was whispering to Trixie and before Kid could make him eat lead Artie's nose starts to bleed and Trixie begs to let him live.
So now Artie took a hike and Trixie owes him. Getting him in jail is a lot harder than we had previously thought.
