Chapter 17: Judge Brown

Your POV

We gave him the accumulator and he got it ready. "Are the block barrings all in the raised position?" he asked. Marty looked.

"Check!" he said. "Then it looks like all systems are a go!" Emmett said. I smiled at the two. "Wish me luck!" he said. I smiled and put my hand on his arm. "We don't have to, Emmett," we said before he was getting ready to get into the car.

"Objection, your honor! I hereby demand that the scientific demonstration of one Emmett Lathrop Brown be terminated and forfeited , by reason of insanity! I declare him to be in contempt of me, his father!" I looked to Emmett to see him dive behind the car and hide.

I rose a brow before I looked back down to where his father was. "Where is he! Hand him over  this instant!" We went over to talk to Emmett. "Just jump in the levitator and go! What's he gonna do?"

Emmett looked at us. "Shoot me down with an anti-aircraft gun!" he said. I  sighed and shook my head as I looked at his father as they talked.

"Come on Emmett. You don't want to lose your big moment, do you? You don't look very dignified crouching down there like that, you know?" he asked.

"Better undignified than dead!" he said as he stayed down there. "I thought you weren't scared of your father anymore?" Marty asked.

"When he's in a mood like this, I'd have to be suicidal not to be scared!" he said. "Let me talk to him" Marty said before he went to look at Judge Brown. "You! Don't think you can shelter him!" he said. I looked over to Emmett as he shook his head quickly. Marty tried to tell him that he just missed his son but he wouldn't take it.

"Young man, I've been sitting on the bench of the Hill Valley Criminal Court for fifteen years. I can smell a dissembler a mile away. Now, are you going to turn him over, or will I have to use force?" I sighed deeply as I looked at him

"You can't keep holding him under your thumb like this! He's practically a genius, he knows what he's doing, can't you just trust him and let him have the room to do what he wants with his life? Sure somethings might fail but that's because nothing should work on the first try. How long have you been trying to make a name for yourself? It didn't happen overnight now did it?" I asked.

He looked at me and he seemed to change with more fury. "Don't antagonize him" I heard from  Emmett as he was behind the car still. "If you're not going to say anything then we should." he said before Judge Brown started to come up the stairs to get his son. I moved down and looked at him as I squared up to him with the only look I had, the one that sends enough disapproval to make anyone think twice about saying something. It works with Marty and Doc. But it had no effect on his father. Fuck!

"Son, I order you to come down from there this second!" he said. Emmett stood and crossed his arms as he ignored his father. "You dare disobey a direct order?" he asked. Marty looked at us two before I shrugged. He looked back to Judge Brown. "I want to talk to my son!" he said.

"Emmett's not ready to talk to you just yet" he said. "Mein gott" he mumbled. "I suppose you're his mouthpiece?" he asked. Marty nodded and I rose a brow. Emmett and I exchanged a look. "If I  can say so sir, the problem is you're coming on too strong. You intimidate him" Marty said. "I don't intimidate him enough! that's the problem!" he said. I groaned and shook my head. We looked to Emmett who turned around. "I'm not talking to him, there's no point" he said.

"Just go deal with him, what have you got to lose?" I asked. "That's exactly what they said to Custer." Emmett mumbled. I rubbed my face as I looked between the three. "Maybe he'll give you a fair trial so you can explain what you're doing? He is a judge after all" Marty asked.

"Yeah, a judge who's already passed sentence. He won't listen to me.. he never has." he said. I hummed gently before I rubbed his arm a little letting him lean into me. Marty walked back over to Judge Brown as he tried to reason with him. This whole thing reminded me of my father. The only person that was able to get him to listen to reason was my mother. She isn't around to back me up anymore. My father's too much of a diehard.

"He said you never listen to him" Marty said. Judge Brown sighed deeply. "That only shows how pigheaded he is! Of course, I'll listen, If he can justify his craziness, I'll be only too happy to indulge it." he said. I looked to his father before Emmett. I rolled my sleeves up before I walked down the steps towards his father. "What is it with parents these days thinking they know exactly the path that their kids need to follow for them to be succesful. Just because his path is different than the one you took doesn't mean it's any less successful. Hell, he could be awarded with the key to the city when he's older, we won't know if he doesn't go through with his demo tonight like he's been planning to do all damn day! So now if you'll excuse us, Judge Brown, we have an electrokinetic levitator to present!" I said as he was at the bottom of the steps and looked at me before his son.

With a deep breath he nodded and we were able to go through with it. I walked back up the steps and looked at the two. "You might want to get in the car before he changes his mind" I said. Emmett smiled and nodded before he got into the car. "Give Trixie the signal, we're ready for liftoff!" he said. We did and she presented Emmett so he could have the stage. Emmett got into the car and Marty closed the roof. I knelt down and looked at him "You'll be fine, Emmett. Just  don't break a leg" I said. He chuckled and looked at me before nodding.

I stood back and let him work his magic.  He turned on the car and it rolled down the ramp before it dropped for a second and then took off. "Look at that! My Emmett is flying!" Judge Brown said. I smiled and looked at Marty as he flew around the room. "He did it!" I said. He nodded happily. "We knew he could." he said before we high fived. We looked outside to see Doc and Edna talking. We left while everyone was focused on Emmett and went to see what was up. Edna pushed Doc out of the way and stole the DeLorean. Danny was outside trying to get her to stop so he could arrest her.

I looked to Marty and sighed deeply. "We never get a break, do we?" he shook his head before we went over to Doc. He stood slowly. "I thought I could change her, things could be different." he said "Forget about it, come on we gotta find a way to stop her before-"  Doc started to fade as Emmett went through with the demo, making that version of Doc be wiped from time. The DeLorean came up the sidewalk and Doc jumped to get Marty and I out of the way before we got hit. We sat up and I looked at Doc. "Doc!" I said and crawled over to him. I put his head on my lap as we sat there.

Marty grabbed his hand as I looked at them both sadly. "Doc.. No" I said as he looked at us. "Chromium, lithium, potassium, iridium, titanium, ruthenium," he said. I looked at him for a moment and rose a brow "Newspaper" he mumbled. Marty got the newspaper from the 80s and looked at it as it changed. "Local inventor presented the key to the city?" I asked as I looked at it. Doc laid down as he sighed deeply. I looked to the school to see flashing blue lights and an explosion. Doc faded out and I felt my eyes water as he was gone completely.

The doors to the school opened and smoke started to flood out. We looked over and stood slowly as we still had solemn faces. Emmett walked out with messy hair as he coughed. "Marty? (y/n)? Have you two been out her the whole time?" he asked as he saw us. "Emmett, is it over already?" Marty asked as he walked over.

"Oh, it's over all right, you missed a very..wild party. I'm afraid I've been banned from the expo for the next 50 years. If I were you, I wouldn't go back in, either. At least.. not until all the broken glass is swept up." he turned around "What was I thinking? Naturally the ionic wind generated by an electromagnet of that size is going to play havoc with a merely mechanical steering mechanism. We need a much more advanced control system. I wonder.. if we could find a way to translate the body's own gravitational field into electrokinetic force, one might be able to direct the ionic currents simply by shifting one's weight. Great Scott, that's it!" he said before he looked at me and pulled me into a kiss. He blinked a little after he looked at me and blushed.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to!" he said. I looked at Marty and he shrugged. I giggled and grabbed Emmett's hand for a moment as I looked at him. "Don't worry about it, Emmett." I said before Marty broke in. "Then.. you're.. you're not discouraged?" He asked. Emmett shook his head quickly. "Discouraged? By what? You mean what happened in there? Nah! That was a learning experience! The way I see it, it's those little mistakes along the way that advance us along the pathway of knowledge!" he started walking a little. "Come on! there's no time to lose, let's get back to the lab and" he stopped when he saw that we weren't moving.

"Is..something wrong?" he asked as he walked back over after rubbing his neck. Marty and I looked at each other. "It's a uh.. long story. Let's just say we.. um. lost someone close to us." I said and Emmett frowned. "How sad. Anyone I know?" he asked. Marty shook his head. "No, nobody here knew him. He was a complete stranger to this world." Emmett smiled and nodded. "I know the feeling, sounds like a man after my own heart," he said before we chuckled. "Then it is someone I know!" Emmett said and we smiled gently. "Yes, I mean no. Don't worry about it. it has nothing to do with you" I said.

"You're a comeplete mystery to me, the both of you are. Where you come from, what you're doing here. But there's one thing I do know, whatever it is it does have something to do with me." he said before he saw the newspaper on the ground. Marty got it from him quickly and Emmett was confused. "C'mon! Lemme see, I deserve an explanation!" he said. Marty and I looked at each other before I sighed. "Okay, here goes." I said We took the front of the paper and tore it out before folding it up. I looked to Emmett as I held it behind me.

"What's that?" he asked as he looked at us. "An explanation," I said. He went to grab it but I held on. "You have to promise me, that you won't open it until you win the key to the city." I said. We heard Judge Brown call for Emmett as he looked at the building. "You gotta promise." I said. he looked at me before nodding. "Key to the city? I don't understand," he said. Marty sighed. "You can't either. It'll cause irreparable damage to something, just say you promise," he said.

He promised before he put the paper in his pocket and went inside to meet up with his father. He stopped and turned around. "I will see you both again, right?" he asked.  "You will, but not for a little while, I promise." I said as I sighed deeply as I looked at Marty. He nodded for a moment before sighing as we heard Judge Brown call for him again and he went inside. "It's really good that Doc never goes against his promises." I said and he nodded. "No kidding." We heard a loud noise and looked over to see a DeLorean,
