Chapter 38 ~ Blame It On The 5 Year Old

Brianna's POV

I'm still deeply into this science project when I hear a loud ringing noise. Multiple screams are heard throughout the library. What the heck is going on? "Everybody, we ask of you to please evacuate the building and wait in the parking lot until this situation has been investigated. Thank you," the loudspeaker goes. Oh great, just what we need.

I file out of the front door with everyone else. The group is waiting outside for me by the time I get out. "What the heck happened?" I say, heavily breathing from the rush.

"I may or may not have set off the fire alarm," Katelyn says, slightly smirking.

"Why?!? Are you stupid?!"

"No... Not that stupid anyways. I mean, I did win third place at our school science fair." Katelyn glares at Chris as if she was mentally telling him not to object.

"Right, do you think they'll find out it was you?"

"No. If they do, I'll blame it on the 5 year old next to me when it happened." She points to a family on the other side of the parking lot.

"Ok...?" I say. "Why did you pull it anyway?"

"To stop Adelaide."

"What's she do this time?"

"Ooh..." Katelyn trails off. "About that." She's playing with the hem of her band t-shirt.

"What? Did she make a bad pun?"

"No, no, definitely not that. I'm just going to let this video explain everything." She shows me a video of Adelaide wrecking Jade and my's project. Jade looks over my shoulder to see why I was gasping so much. Even her jaw drops a little bit.

"Oh that little son of a-" Jade says before I interrupt her.

"Mother. Son of a mother. Even though she is a boy. I think..." I say to cut her off from going on any farther.

"Attention students, families, and visitors," the loudspeaker says. "The building has been checked for any fires, and there is none. It is now safe to enter the building. Sorry for the interruption of our science fair. Thank you."

Everyone rushes in and the judges are at our row now. Good thing we're at the end. They started all the way at the other side. "What are we going to do?" I panicked. "We can get disqualified from the fair for having a wrecked poster board!"

"Calm the freak down, Bri," Jade says, "We'll just show them the video when they come to our project, no biggie!"

"What about our burgers? Adelaide switched them out, remember?"

"We'll just have to get them back ourselves. C'mon, let's go find her. It'll be a while until the judges get here anyways."

Jade, Heather, Katelyn, Andrea, and I all make our way through the crowd to find Adelaide. "Think, think. If I were Adelaide, where would I be?" I say to myself. "The bathroom!" I say a little to loudly. I receive a few states. "Whoops," I mutter.

I wasn't so sure about Adelaide being in the bathroom, but it's yucky so no one goes there anyways. I open the door and there she is, Adelaide. "Oh, hey Bri!" She brings me into a hug. Trying to cover it up, huh, Adelaide? She standing by the mirror putting on lipstick like me earlier.

"Hey," I say and pull alway as quickly as I can.

"What's got you in a bunch? It's just a hug." She's chewing on gum with her mouth open which disgusts me. I'm trying not hard not to gag myself.

"Pretty big bag there, huh?" I say, tracing random shapes on the sink counter.

"Yeah, I got it for my birthday last year."

"What's inside it?"

"Oh, you know the usual."

"Oh cool!" I look up from my shape tracing. "Mind if I take a look?"

Adelaide pulls her bag which was on the counter towards her. "No!"

  I stare at her.

"I mean..." She says. "I mean, sorry, but no."

"Why not?" I ask, getting ready to grab it and run.

"It's my precious bag and my favorite too. I don't want anything to happen to it."

"I'm just looking at what's inside. It's not like I'll take out the scissors inside and cut up your bag." With that, I grab the bag and run out the door.

"Hey! Get back here!" I hear Adelaide say from inside the bathroom. I can barely hear her cause I'm running so fast. I look behind me and Adelaide is catching up. How can she run in those heels? I push through the crowd of people to find our table. I scan the crowd. Nope. Nope. Nope. THERE IT IS! I race towards our table and plop the bag down. The group is all there and so are the judges. "We already showed them the video," Heather said. I nod my head and search through the huge bag. I pull out the containers with hamburgers and the scissors that were used to cut out pieces of our poster board. When I put them on the table, Adelaide catches up. "Uhh... I-I," she stutters.

"Uhh... I-I am stuttering," Jade mocks. Katelyn and I laugh at that a little.

"It's not what it looks like, right Mrs. Rivera?" Adelaide puts a strand of her blonde hair that fell out of her ponytail behind her ear while looking towards the science teacher herself.

"I'm afraid to say that from the video we have seen, you and your partner have been disqualified from the science fair," Mrs. Rivera says to Adelaide. I have a silent dance party in my mind.

"Ugh! I hate this!" Adelaide stomps away.

"So who won?" I ask, putting the phony containers in the bag.

"Well, they're announcing winners soon," Mrs Rivera says clipping papers onto her clipboard.

  "Sweet!" Jade says.

Katelyn looks up from her phone. "What happened? What's going on? What did I miss? Most importantly, what is ADHD?"

"That's a rather odd question," Shawn says looking up from his phone as well.

"Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Short attention span and distracted easily," I say, "Why?"

"Just curious." Katelyn shrugs and looks back down at her phone.

About five minutes later, the loudspeaker turns on. "Good afternoon everyone, may we please have your undivided attention."

Everyone looks up from their phones.

"We are going to announce this year's county science fair winners. In third place, Frank Rodilize! He is from Cypress Elementary and won third place for his Diet Coke and mentors project! Congrats, Frank!" The library erupts into cheers.

"In second place," the loudspeaker continues, "Katelyn Foxx and Christopher Douglas! They are from Arcadia High and won for their 'How Rock Music Affects Your Mood!' Congrats Katelyn and Christopher!" Everyone erupts into cheers again. Katelyn stands up on the table where the projects used to be- they were transported back to school- and bows and curtsies. "It's so hard to curtsy in these pants," Katelyn says from on top of the table. We laugh as the loudspeaker comes on again.

"And in first place, Adelaide Jenkins and Gregory Chambers!" Only a few people clap. When I say few, I mean Gregory is clapping for Adelaide as well as her parents. Not even Heather is clapping. I thought they were disqualified!

"Oh, I'm sorry." The loudspeaker breaks the awkward claps. "There seems to have been a misunderstanding. They were disqualified. The real winners are Brianna Myers and Jade Hughes! They are also from Arcadia High and one with there 'How Fast Do Different Fast Food Joints' Burgers Mold?' project! Congrats on winning this year's science fair! Winners, we will send your ribbons and certificates in the mail. You should get them no later than Wednesday. Thank you, and have a nice rest of your day."

"Woo!" everyone screams. People I don't know came up to me and Jade and congratulate us on our job well done. Kind of awkward, but who cares? We son the freaking science fair! Again...

Hey guys! Whoaaaa! Long chapter. Almost 1,350 words. This is the end of the science fair and will return to school and stuff later. See ya all in the next chapter!

Till then,
~Orchid
