Chapter 17 ~ Cup Of Care
Brianna's POV
I approach school the next morning with my Starbucks coffee cup in hand. I see Jade and her group are talking with Katelyn again. "Hey, guys," I say, trying not to interrupt anything.
"Hey, Bri," Katelyn and Jade say at the same time. They both laugh at their synchronized speech. "Hey, Katelyn?" I ask.
"Yes?" she replies trying to recover from her fit of laughter.
"You never gave me your phone number, so I was wondering if I could have it in case we had to talk about any of Jade's plans." I look towards Jade who is trying to stifle a laugh.
"Sure!" she says and takes out her phone. She gives me her number and we both put our phones away.
"Thanks," I say to Katelyn.
"No problem," she replied pushing her dark brown hair behind her back.
"Hey, Brianna," I hear a voice call from behind me. I turn around and see Adelaide.
"Oh, hey Adelaide," I say back. This conversation isn't going to end well.
"Your shoes don't go with your outfit," she says motioning at my neon pink converse and then at my black outfit.
Time to see how the first lesson of comebacks worked out for me. I show Adelaide my Starbucks coffee cup that used to hold the drink. "See this?" I show the empty cup to her. "This is my cup of care. Oh look, it's empty."
"OOOOH! BUUURN!" the group says. "Th-the first lesson r-really payed off, huh Br-Bri," Heather says in between laughs. Even some of Adelaide's friends tried to stifle a giggle.
"Hmph!" Adelaide said and walked away lifting her nose up.
"That'll teach her not to mess with me," I say while walking back to everyone.
"That was great!" Jade says while still laughing. "Lesson two is tonight. Come prepared with witty comebacks and a lot of coffee. You're going to be at my house for a while, Bri."
**************
"Science project partners are..." said Mrs. Rivera, my science teacher. I wasn't really paying attention to what she was saying until now. Jade, Chris, Katelyn, and I all had Mrs. Rivera for science. Everyone else had Mr. Lewis, the other science teacher for the senior year students. Mrs. Rivera rambled off a few names of partners when she said, "Hughes, Jade and Myers, Brianna." Jade gave me a grin -or a smirk, I couldn't really tell- from the other side of the room. After saying the rest of the partner pairs, she said, "You are to come up with your own project including a hypothesis, conclusion, how it works, and directions on how to do it yourself," she began to explain, "It will be due next week, so be productive." The bell rang and everyone sprinted out before she could say anything else.
I walked out of the classroom and went to my usual lunch table. I took out a ham and cheese sandwich from my backpack that I had made this morning. I took a few bites off of it when I hear someone say, "Hey, Brianna."
I look up and see Adelaide. Oh great, what did she want with me now?
"You have a little hair sticking out of your bun," she says pointing to it. It's called a 'messy bun' for a reason, Adelaide.
Time to think of a good comeback. "Shh..." I put one finger on her mouth. A few people stare at us. Oh great... "That's the sound of no one caring." Some people started to laugh.
Adelaide takes my finger off her mouth. "Don't touch my mouth," she tells me.
"You don't tell me what to do!" I put my finger back on her mouth to make sure she stays quiet.
She removes my finger yet again. This time everyone gives us funny looks. "Shut up," she tells me through gritted teeth.
"I don't shut up," I say, "I grow up. And when I look at you, I throw up." I get a lot of 'OOOH! BUUURNS!' from the cafeteria.
"Ugh! Whatever!" Adelaide exclaims and walks away from my table. Serves you right Jenkins. Serves you right.
