Chapter 23: Frightful Fun
It's Saturday, and I'm in desperate need of some excitement. Yesterday was a rollercoaster, and tonight, I just want to let loose, but my brain's drawing a blank. It's 10:00 AM, which is a decent time to wake up on a weekend after the drama marathon I had. I rolled out of bed, brushed my teeth, took a shower, and prepared to whip up something fabulous for breakfast.
Just as I was about to channel my inner chef, Anthony showed up with breakfast in tow. Freshly cooked, steaming hot, and with that smile of his—ugh, he's perfect. Moments like these make me fall for him even harder.
We dug into breakfast, and then he dropped the bomb: he's heading out of town today and won't be back until Sunday evening. Cue the dramatic sigh. I was bummed, but I get it. I told him I was cool with it, and we shared a kiss goodbye. As he walked out, I felt a tear well up. Haha, not really.
Back in my room, I grabbed my phone and hit up the girls on FaceTime. If today was going to be salvaged, I needed my squad.
"Hey, besties!" I greeted, flipping my hair dramatically.
"Hey, boo!" Xalia and Karissa chimed in perfect sync.
"Hey, bestie," Jaelee added, cool as ever.
"So, ladies, I need to have some fun today, but I have zero ideas. Help a girl out!"
Karissa sighed. "I'm in the same boat. Totally clueless."
Jaelee perked up. "Well, I have an idea, but I'm not sure if you guys will be into it."
"Hmmm, spill the tea, Jaelee," Xalia urged.
"Yeah, dish it out!" I echoed.
"Okay, so picture this: we hit the fair, ride all the rides, and snap some killer Instagram pics because, duh, we're the original baddies. And then, how about we visit a haunted house?" Jaelee proposed, her eyes twinkling with mischief.
I raised an eyebrow. "I love it, but a haunted house? Really?"
"The fair sounds good, but I'm not so sure about the haunted house," Xalia said, always the voice of reason.
Karissa rolled her eyes. "Y'all are such chickens. The haunted house would be epic!"
"Exactly!" Jaelee exclaimed. "So, it's settled. We're hitting the fair and then the haunted house. And we can pray to Jesus when we get home tonight."
So, the girls decided to roll with Jaelee's plan: a day at the fair followed by a haunted house visit. The fair sounded like a blast, but the haunted house? What would we even be doing besides screaming and kicking? Still, it could be fun. After our call ended, it was time to transform into our fabulous selves and meet up at the fair.
I dashed to my makeup station because, as Jaelee put it, we needed to look like the original baddies we are. While powdering my face, I inhaled too much and ended up in a coughing fit. Not exactly glamorous, but I pulled it together. I made sure my makeup was flawless, and my lips were popping. I straightened my hair for a sleek look, slipped into some jean shorts and a crop top, and girl, I was effortlessly slaying.
I strutted downstairs, and my mom was practically speechless. She insisted on taking a few pictures before I left. With the impromptu photo session over, I hopped into my car and headed to the fair. As I pulled in, I spotted Karissa's car driving in too. We parked, got out, and greeted each other with the usual sass.
"Okay, Dena, I see you," Xalia said, giving me an approving once-over.
"I see you too, haha," I replied, feeling the vibe.
Karissa grinned. "Dena, you look absolutely delicious."
"For real, Dena, you look like a whole snack," Jaelee added with a playful wink.
"Oh my God, haha, thank you so much!" I said, basking in the compliments.
"You're welcome!" Karissa and Jaelee chimed in unison.
"Okay, guys, let's snap a picture for Instagram," Xalia suggested, her phone already in hand.
"Ouu yes," Karissa agreed, striking a pose.
"Say cheese!" Xalia directed.
We snapped the picture with the caption #TeenageBaddies because damn, we looked good. After that, we decided to kick off our day with the rollercoaster. Now, rollercoasters aren't exactly my cup of tea, but hey, why not? As we climbed aboard, I could feel my heart racing already. The ride started off smooth, but when it reached the top and plunged down, my spirit damn near left my body. I was screaming for my mom, my dad, heck, I think I even shouted for the whole darn family and shed a tear for my grandma. Karissa was clutching onto me for dear life, eyes shut tight, and honestly, heights are not our thing.
Xalia and Jaelee, on the other hand, were loving every second of it, laughing like maniacs.
"I can't believe you two were screaming," Jaelee teased once we got off.
"And I can't believe you and Xalia enjoyed that," Karissa shot back.
"Right? Unbelievable," I managed between gasps.
After recovering from the rollercoaster ordeal, we decided to chill for a bit, trying to regain our composure. That's when we spotted them—Deanesh and Travis—making out. It was gross, considering Travis had just publicly humiliated and dumped Deanesh. Total idiots, those two. Birds of a feather and all that.
We couldn't stand the sight, so we hightailed it to another area, opting to relax and gossip about anything but those two. But then, of course, the skies opened up, and rain started pouring down on our fair day. Talk about a buzzkill. With our plans drowned out, we decided to hit the mall instead.
We ended up at a fancy restaurant, treating ourselves to some well-deserved grub. The food was as expensive as it was delicious, and we lingered there for an hour, savoring every bite. Stuffed and satisfied, we decided it was time for the haunted house.
I'll admit it—I wasn't keen on the haunted house idea. Last minute, I was ready to chicken out, but Karissa assured me everything would be fine, and that was enough to steel my nerves. So, we arrived at the haunted house, said a quick prayer—why not—and ventured inside.
It was pitch black and terrifying as hell. The moment that door slammed shut behind us, we screamed like banshees. I swear, I heard my name called, and I sprinted blindly, bumping into who-knows-what in the dark abyss.
Suddenly, I tripped over something and hit the ground hard. Something grabbed my foot, and I kicked and screamed like a wild animal. The other girls were freaking out too, yelling to let go of their feet. Xalia was even crying, which broke my heart in the midst of the chaos.
Summoning every ounce of courage, I kicked free and bolted towards a faint light. Miraculously, I found the exit door, flung it open, and we all scrambled out like our lives depended on it.
"I knew this was a bad idea," Xalia gasped, breathless and shaken.
"I'm sorry, guys," Jaelee murmured, clearly feeling guilty.
"It's alright, but we're never doing that again—never," Xalia declared firmly.
"Agreed. That took the cake," I chimed in, my heart still racing.
"Aw, come on, that was a blast! You guys screamed like it was the end of the world," Karissa teased.
"Let's not forget you were screaming too," I shot back, unable to resist.
"Fair point," Karissa admitted sheepishly.
"Let's get out of this place; my skin is crawling," Xalia said, shuddering.
We hurried to our cars and drove to a nearby parking lot, still shaken from the experience. None of us wanted to be alone that night, so we decided to crash at my place. That haunted house had really gotten under our skin.
One by one, Karissa and I dropped off the girls at their houses to gather their things, and finally, we made the last stop at my place. Stepping inside, a wave of relief washed over us. Safe and together, we finally felt at ease.
