ABUJA, NIGERIA
The following weeks that followed were a whirlwind of emotions, Hauwa and Sa'eed hardly slept at night because of Hauwa's worsening condition. The doctors they had gone to each had their diagnosis, and the treatment didn't seem to work. Hauwa's sanity was slowly starting to slip away, and it hurt Sa'eed so much that he couldn't help her.
As the days went by, Hauwa's hallucinations became more frequent and more intense. She would see Safar everywhere, laughing at her, taunting her, and pushing her down the stairs. She would scream and cry, her eyes wild with fear, and Sa'eed would hold her, trying to calm her down, but it seemed like nothing was working.
Sa'eed was at his wit's end. He didn't know what to do, how to help Hauwa. He felt like he was losing her, like she was slipping away from him, and he couldn't do anything to stop it. He would sit by her bedside, holding her hand, and praying to Allah to heal her, to bring her back to him.
Mami and Adda Bahijja were worried sick about Hauwa. They would come to visit her every day, bringing food and drinks, and trying to cheer her up. But Hauwa was beyond consolation. She was lost in her own world, a world of fear and paranoia, and nothing seemed to be able to bring her back.
As the weeks turned into months, Hauwa's condition continued to deteriorate. She would forget things, forget who Sa'eed was, forget who she was. She would look at Sa'eed with a blank expression, and he would feel like his heart was breaking.
Sa'eed was exhausted. He hadn't slept in weeks, and he was starting to feel like he was losing his mind. He would pace back and forth in their bedroom, trying to think of a way to help Hauwa, but nothing seemed to be working.
One night, as he was pacing, he heard a faint whisper. "Sa'eed." He turned around, and Hauwa was sitting up in bed, looking at him with a glimmer of recognition in her eyes.
"Hauwa," he whispered, rushing to her side. "Mi Reina, I'm here. I'm here for you."
Hauwa looked at him, her eyes searching. "Sa'eed," she whispered again. "I'm scared. I'm so scared."
Sa'eed held her close, feeling a surge of hope. Maybe, just maybe, Hauwa was starting to come back to him. Maybe she was starting to remember who he was, who she was.
"I'm here, Hauwa," he whispered. "I'll always be here for you. You're not alone, Mi Reina. You're not alone."
As he held her close, Sa'eed felt a sense of determination. He was going to do everything in his power to help Hauwa, to bring her back to him. He was going to fight for her, fight for their love, and he was not going to give up.
But as the night wore on, Hauwa's hallucinations started again. She would scream and cry, her eyes wild with fear, and Sa'eed would hold her, trying to calm her down. He felt like he was losing her again, like she was slipping away from him, and he didn't know how to stop it.
As the sun started to rise, Sa'eed felt a sense of despair. He didn't know how much more of this he could take. He didn't know how much more of watching Hauwa slip away from him he could handle.
But he knew he had to keep fighting. He had to keep fighting for Hauwa, for their love, and for their future. He was not going to give up, no matter what.
As the day wore on, Sa'eed made a decision. He was going to take Hauwa to see a specialist, someone who could help her, someone who could bring her back to him. He was not going to give up on Hauwa, no matter what.
And with that determination, Sa'eed felt a sense of hope. Maybe, just maybe, he could save Hauwa, save their love, and save their future. Maybe, just maybe, he could bring her back to him, and they could start again.
He didn't get to take her to the specialist though because Mama arrived. She wanted to take Hauwa back home with her because according to her they thought Hauwa's sickness was spiritual.
Sa'eed had been taking care of Hauwa for weeks, nursing her back to health, but it seemed like she was getting worse instead of better. He had left Hauwa with Safar in their house, Safar had been coming to the house every day to help him nurse Hauwa, and he couldn't be more grateful. But if only he knew she was coming so she would continue injecting Hauwa with the drug, then he wouldn't have been so grateful.
As he stepped into the grand Mato mansion after Mami had called him, he saw Mama sitting beside Mami, holding each other's hands, worry etched on their faces. The mansion was quiet, the only sound being the soft hum of the air conditioner.
Sa'eed knelt beside them on the carpet, greeting them respectfully. "Assalamu alaikum, ina kwanan ku; good morning."
Mama and Mami returned his greeting, their voices soft and gentle. "Wa alaikum salam, Lafiya qlau; morning Sa'eed," Mama said, her eyes searching his face. "How is Hauwa? How is her health?"
Sa'eed hesitated, unsure of how to answer. He didn't want to worry them, but he couldn't lie either. "She's...she's not doing well, Mama. The doctors have been trying different treatments, but nothing seems to be working."
Mami's face contorted in worry, her eyes filling with tears. "Oh, Sa'eed. We're so worried about her. We've been thinking, and Hajara wants to take her back home with her."
Sa'eed's eyes widened in surprise. "What? No, Mama. I don't think that's a good idea. I want to be close to her, to take care of her."
Mama's face was firm, her voice resolute. "Sa'eed, we're doing this for Hauwa's health. The medicine the doctors have been prescribing isn't working, and we think it's time to try a different approach. We've spoken to some Islamic scholars, and they think that Hauwa's sickness is spiritual."
Sa'eed felt a surge of anger, his face growing hot. "What? No, Mama. That's not true. Hauwa's sickness is not spiritual. It's medical. We need to find the right treatment, not resort to superstition."
Mami's voice was calm, but firm. "Sa'eed, we understand your concerns, but we're not going to argue about this. Hajara is taking Hauwa back to Kaduna with her, and that's final."
Sa'eed felt a sense of desperation wash over him. He didn't want to lose Hauwa, and didn't want to be separated from her. But Mami's face was unyielding, and he knew that he had to relent.
"Okay, Mami," he said finally, his voice barely above a whisper. "I'll let you take her. But please, please take care of her. I'll make sure that she's getting the best treatment possible."
Mama's face softened, her eyes filling with tears. "I'll take good care of her, Sa'eed. I promise. And we'll make sure that she gets the best treatment possible."
As Sa'eed stood up, feeling defeated and helpless, he couldn't shake off the feeling that he was making a mistake. He was leaving Hauwa in the hands of people who didn't understand her sickness, people who were resorting to superstition instead of medical science.
And as he walked out of the mansion, he couldn't help but wonder if he would ever see Hauwa again, if he would ever be able to hold her in his arms and tell her how much he loved her.
The thought sent a chill down his spine, and he quickened his pace, his heart heavy with worry and fear.

When Mama was about to leave with Hauwa, Sa'eed's heart sank. Hauwa looked so disheveled and broken, her eyes darting frantically around her surroundings. Her eyes, once bright and full of life, now shone with an unfamiliarity that broke Sa'eed's heart.
When he tried to hold her hands, she flinched, pulling away from him. Sa'eed's heart broke further, feeling like he was losing her, bit by bit. Mama gave him a reassuring smile as she and Hauwa entered the car, but Sa'eed couldn't shake off the feeling of despair that had settled over him.
As the car drove away, Sa'eed felt like a part of him had been torn away. Mama had taken a piece of his heart with her, leaving him feeling empty and hollow.
Meanwhile, Safar stood watching them from the window, a sly smile spreading across her face. Mama had taken Hauwa away, which meant she couldn't inject her with the drug anymore. But Safar was not one to give up easily. She would find a way to continue her sinister plan, even if it meant having help from someone inside the house.
Safar's eyes narrowed as she thought about her next move. She knew she had to act fast, before Mama and Hauwa returned. She would start by gathering information, finding out who was loyal to her and who she could manipulate.
As she turned away from the window, Safar's smile grew wider. She was confident that she would succeed in her plan, no matter what it took. And with that thought, she disappeared into the shadows, ready to start her next move.
