Chapter Eight
Snowsilver and Jasper pad along the damp trail, they must be nearing the healers territory if there was a trail.
Jasper sniffs the air, "something doesn't smell right..." he mews.
"I think you're right," Snowsilver takes a deep breath in, "it almost smells like..." he freezes, "fox-"
"Fox-!?" Jasper drops his voice to a low whisper, "I've never been into a fight before- what do we do?"
Snowsilver pauses, unsure of what guidance to give the obviously inexperienced tom, "do you know how to climb?"
"Well obviously," Jasper rolls his eyes, "It's not hard," he begins to chuckle but cuts himself off at a glare from Snowsilver.
"If the scent gets any stronger, we'll climb the nearest tree," Snowsilver instructs.
Going into battle with an inexperienced loner against fox wouldn't be a good idea. Waiting it out in a tree would be the safest idea, especially if they could move between the trees to escape the fox's territory.
Snowsilver leads the way forward, taking a moment to sniff the air at every few steps.
"I think we need to begin climbing," Snowsilver notices a tuft of orange fur caught on a thicket a few tail lengths ahead of them.
Jasper nods, "ok."
Snowsilver begins to climb a tree off to the edge of the path, now realizing the path had likely been formed by the foxes and not the healers. Jasper follows him quickly, his eyes darting around wildly as the bushes bellow begin to rustle.
Snowsilver motions to him to be quiet as they each settle on a branch of the tree. Jasper just nods and stares at the ground.
A fox steps slowly out of the bushes, it's long tail swishing fiercely behind it. The fox stares up at the cats in the tree, a low snarl can be heard even in the tree.
Snowsilver begins creeping towards the next tree over, one that would hopefully lead to trees closer to the healers camp.
"Follow me!" He calls to Jasper, not concerned about his volume as he leaps over to the next tree.
Once he finds his footings he glances back to Jasper, who is scrambling between branches on his way over. Each branch sways and drops him closer to the growling fox.
"Jump!" Snowsilver pleads.
Jasper makes sure the branch is steady enough and pushes off, jumping to the next tree.
The fox races to the base of the next tree over and Snowsilver makes his way around the tree to jump again.
He jumps to the next tree and keeps going for several trees after that, glancing through the trees at the bright orange of the setting sun. He checks to be sure Jasper is still behind him before he jumps to another tree, climbing higher as he goes from tree to tree.
After a while the fox gives up and heads back towards its den, growling loudly as it goes.
Snowsilver glances around at the trees, trying to decide which to jump to next. A hole in the side of one catches his eye.
Is that...? He asks himself.
"Let's go to that one over there, with the hole in it," Snowsilver suggests.
Jasper nods, yawning and blinking tiredly.
Snowsilver leads the way over to the tree, going through three other trees on the way there. He climbs downward on the way to the opening.
He looks into the opening of the hole, checking to make sure it's empty. It is... he breathes in deeply.
"C'mon, let's get some rest," he nods his head towards the hole.
He steps into the hole and lays in the front, letting Jasper step over him. He takes a deep breath, attempting to breathe in the scents from those many moons ago when he had slept in this very tree.
"Goodnight," Jasper yawns, squirming in the old moss bed.
"Goodnight," Snowsilver sighs.
Snowsilver yawns and stretches out his front paws as far as he can in the cramped den. He pads out onto the tree branch.
He looks around at the other trees, "its been so long, but I remember..." He sighs to himself, "I'm coming Silverfur."
