Ch.38 - Past Tense

I place a hand over my mouth to muffle a giggle. Sans filled me in on what was going to happen.

"This might be a little soon, but.." G sighed and kneeled. The fire danced in the middle of our circle. Ashes and sparks rose above and fell around us. The darkness left the glow of it flickering across G and Opal, adding to the beautiful moment. Opal's brown eyes reflected the flames as she stared down at G, mouth gaping and silently floundering for words.

I could hear her quickened heartbeat from the other side of the gently crackling fire. Take that as you may.

Her blue, green tipped curls fell and shaped her soft features down to her chin. The front strands of  her hair were pinned back.

G reached into his back pocket and pulled out a small black box. Pulling it in front of him, he ran a thumb over it and glanced back up at her, nerves shining in his pupils.

I felt an almost burning sensation flowing in my hands and face. Panic pained in my throat, but I swallowed it down. Balling my fists in the pockets of the hoodie I wore, I closed my eyes.

Deep breath in, deep breath out.

An arm wrapped around me, causing me to flinch and open my eyes. The burning had lowered to my throat and lightened on my hands. The arm moved and a hand was placed softly on my cheek, turning my face a little. Sans eyes looked back at mine. Worry, curiosity, and frustration. These were the vibes I got from him as he sat at the edge of his seat. I pulled one hand out of his hoodie pocket. He had taken it off and insisted I wear it towards the beginning of the night. I sighed, now feeling a lump in my throat from yet another lie I had to tell.

I knew he knew.

He knew I was hiding something.

He knew I was struggling.

He wanted answers.

I wouldn't give give them. Won't.

He knows that too.

And yet, he still presses. Not as insistent as before, but still pressing a little.

Sans had pried too much at one point, and I snapped at him. Telling him that he didn't need nor want to know. Basically confirming his suspicions that anything was going on in the first place. He was more gentle and understanding after that. His patience was slowly growing thin, though.

His staring, pressing, faintly glowing pupils were enough for me to try and avert my eyes, but he caught my chin. I looked at him again, my straight expression faltering into one of minor distress. "Sans.." I whispered. "Now...now isn't the time for this."  He huffs and let's out an almost inaudible growl of frustration. I scoot close to him and reach to kiss his cheekbone apologetically. He pulls away before I can.

That's the last he made make eye contact with me that night. I turned my attention away from him, the emotional lump in my throat, and rather back to Opal and G. I hear a twig snap behind me, but find nothing upon inspection. Sans seemed to have heard it too, but didn't turn.

"... I don't want to wait anymore." G breathed a slight nervous chuckle. "I know I have a temper. I know I'm selfish. I'm a bit controlling and overprotective at times. I wrong you and jump to conclusions more often than not. I'm a difficult person to be with, heh, I know. So that's why...that's why if you reject me now..." his voice broke ever so slightly at the end of that trail, and his eyes lowered to the box, "...I will accept that."

A few more soft snaps sounded heading around the group.

G finally rose his eyes to hers, "I love you. I just want you to be happy, even if it's not with me." He opened the box, a silver ring with small jewels wrapping the band sit nestled in the soft, protective cotton inside the box. "Opal Sparrows, will you marry me?"

Opal's eyes glistened with wet, unshed tears. "G.." She laughed lightly, "You're so confusing." Smiling she stepped closer. Light, swift footsteps rushed towards the couple and I gasped, standing. In a single blurred motion Opal's eyes were glowing and magic activated a moment too late. The tip of a blade poked through her gut. G was too stricken with horror to act immediately.

That burning was back again, but this time hot with rage, and unrestrained. I allowed it to spread.

The blade was yanked from her body and Opal fell into G. The culprit wasted no time in running.

Neither did I.

Flinging off the hoodie, I launched myself in their direction, a growl rumbling in my chest. I ran, and didn't hold back. I let myself test my speed. It matched theirs.

Which meant they weren't human either.

Snapping my eyes open, my breath came out in ragged gasps as if I had actually been running. My skin burned.

A hum sounded a few feet in front of me. Once my vision cleared, I distinguished the source. EchoTale Frisk was leaning her back against a wall with her arms crossed over her chest.

"Sweet dreams?" She smiled.

Sorry for the delay!

I have a lot going on in my life right now. I planned on writing multiple chapters to compensate for the lack of updates the past couple weeks, but I just haven't had the time. I'm sorry again. I'll update when I can!

Summer will regulate my writing schedule for sure.

Happy Mother's Day!

~ Bub =)
