Prologue
Cold. The bitter, bitter cold had enveloped her as she trudged through the darkness. It was windy, and snowflakes pelted onto her face. She shivered, vision slowly growing more and more blurry.
Tears built up in her eyes, snot was dripping from her nose, and she only had one goal in this moment. To live.
But all of this was cut short, when her numb body shut off her senses one by one. At a moment, she could no longer taste the frost on her tongue, or smell the harshness of the air. Her touch had left her long ago, being replaced by a fiery and cold sensation, but even that escaped her.
Her legs kept moving, as if guided by God herself, and she huddled into herself for any shred of warmth.
As her hearing left, she could only think of memories to help her in her last moments. Memories flooded her mind, never staying for longer than a second.
Looking down at a pair of new shoes in bright colored paper ripped open. The yellow lighting, the warmth of her parents hugging her...
Her parents hugging her, and feeling her ribs get squeezed into her form...
Playing with a toy truck with another friend of her's...
Sipping warm tea as someone shouted something in the background...
The tears in her eyes as her best friend got dragged away, shoved in the back of a prison cart...
Eating a piece of bread, hiding in a cupboard as the patrol passed through, looking for any children under 13...
Packing her things, and hugging her parents as they send her off into the nearest woods with only a map, the clothes on her back, and a pack full of supplies to make a new life...
She could only let out a small, almost silent scream as her vision tunneled. She looked around for something comfortable to faint onto, knowing if she had a chance at survival she would have to be hidden. The closest thing was under some dry brush. She lifted it with the last of her strength, before sliding down the tree and feeling her vision slowing but surely black out.
And darkness finally overtook her sight.
