Chapter 8: Back to the Future?

In less than a second, both of us were then in the year of Y/Y. We ended up outside of my house, in the backyard. It appeared to me that my family was not home, simply due to the fact that I was not able to notice any lights on through the windows. "W-where are we?" Armin asked as he looked around with both wonder and fear in his eyes. "This, here, is my house. We're in the year of Y/Y, now. This is where I'm from," I told him as he completely ignored me. He let go of my hand and began to wander around aimlessly, in the backyard. "House?!" he exclaimed, "this is a mansion- no, more like a castle! It's about a billion times the size of a cabin!"

"My house isn't that big compared to others here. Come, I'll show you around," I assured him as I grabbed his soft, frail hand and guided him up to my backyard's chestnut-stained wood stairs. My house was made of a grey and salmon-pink stone brick. Since my parents were gone, the doors would be locked. I grabbed the spare key from under the flowerpot to my right, which was filled with wilting greens. My family was never great at taking care of plants. I slid the key in the lock and turned it to the left. I let go of Armin's hand to do so, although I really did not want to. I then opened the door. Both of us walked in and took off our shoes. Armin stood at the door, admiring the modern decor in amazement.

"You can walk around. Feel free to explore. I can't imagine how you must feel seeing things that are... uh-"

"Futuristic. Nonexistent, well, in my time. Can I really look around?" he asked eagerly. "Yeah, go for it. You can touch things, just don't break them. You know what, never mind, I'll just come with you. I'll show you how things work." I declared, figuring that my supervision was probably going to be necessary. "Alright. Oh, what's that?" he said, pointing at the large flat-screen television in my living room. "The TV?" I questioned, oblivious to the fact that he was trying to describe something he had never seen before. Of course, a TV would have been easily recognized by the people from my time.

"I don't know," he replied in response to my ignorant question. "It just shows videos of things. I don't really know how to describe it," I told him. "Videos?" he questioned as I grabbed the TV remote. I pressed the ON button and a news channel appeared on the screen. Armin yelped and stumbled backward, obviously startled. He sat on the floor covering his ears and squeezing his eyes shut. I got down on his level and gestured my hand out for him to grab.

"What's it doing? It's very noisy," he asked me nervously. "It's just moments recorded that are replaying for our amusement. It's just replaying moments in time. I promise that it won't hurt you. It's just for entertainment, I promise" I reassured him. He grabbed my hand and I pulled him up with me as I stood up. Helping him up didn't require much force, as he clearly weighed little and, thus, the force of gravity acting on him would be little as well. As much as my impulsive, judgmental mind was directing me to do otherwise, I decided not to make any comments on his weight because I figured he may be self-conscious about it.

Both of us stayed at my house for about another hour or so. I showed him around and introduced him to some recent technologies and trends. The way he looked at everything just made me want to hold him tight and never let go. He was just too precious. It was late, though, and it was probably around dinnertime back in the 850. I had to break the news to him and tell him that we had to go. "We have to leave? Why?" he whined. "It's dinner and people will notice if you're not there," I answered logically.

"No. Nobody notices me, I swear."

His efforts were weak but all at the same time they seemed ever so true. "You have Eren and Mikasa. They would most definitely notice if you were gone," I told him. It was as if he was a little kid in a toy store and I was his mother trying to leave. "Can we please stay just a little while longer?" he begged me.

"We can't, I'm sorry. We can come back another time, I promise."

"Really?"

"Yes."

"Fine."

I mean, I technically could have taken us back with plenty of time to spare before dinner, but I was tired. Touring him around was exhausting and I honestly just wanted to sit down. After we put our shoes on, I placed the spare key under the flowerpot and closed the door from the inside, locking it. I drew out a portal and Armin held my hand. He was so very soft and I just did not want to let go of him. I don't think I'd ever felt skin so silky soft before then. I guided him through the portal which led us back into my cabin.

"We're back," I announced. Armin looked over and me and smiled warmly. Just as we took a moment of silence, the dinner bell rang. I was glad that we had made it back in time for dinner. My abilities to travel to specific times were becoming quite refined. Armin let go of my hand and looked down at the ground. I opened the cabin's door and he walked outside, then down the creaky steps. I closed the door and followed him. We began to walk down to the mess hall together. I glanced at him, then the sky. The sun was setting early, meaning that it was soon to be winter. Winter was cold and so I was dreading it. Time had been going by faster than I had expected it to.

"Y/N," Armin said quietly beneath his breath. "Yes?" I responded. "I had a really good time with you today. Thank you for taking me to your time. I believe you, by the way," he explained. I looked down at my feet and smiled, feeling my stomach tingle. "No problem and I'm really glad you do," I said as we entered the mess hall. Armin went to sit with his other friends, as per usual. The sun was setting and it was the end of another beautiful day.
