Chapter 5: Just a Few Hours
It had been three full weeks since Armin's first visit to my cabin and it hadn't been his last. He started coming over during every free period, after the first. This was completely unexpected but it made me happy, like, really happy, especially when he sat on my bed, engulfed in a book. He just looked so peaceful and his presence seemed to internally warm me in a nice feeling way. I secretly appreciated sleeping on the pillow that earlier his back had rested on. Every aspect of him seemed to be beautiful and perfect. I loved the way that a stray piece of hair would fall in front of his face and how he would use his hand to swiftly guide it back into place. I thought that it was absolutely adorable of him to do so. I had an urge to run up to him and swarm him with hugs. I couldn't, though, because after all, we were merely friends. Only a bit closer than acquaintances.
Today had marked the third week of his regularly scheduled visits. As always, he politely knocked on my door and I invited him inside. He sat down on my bed, as per usual, and opened up his book. However, I was feeling particularly tired on that day, so I wanted to sleep. It had been an exhausting week of physical training so I decided that I needed a few more hours of sleep. I was on the couch. I closed my eyes and snuggled up into my pink blanket. Armin looked over at me and started to get up off of the bed. He had a worried expression engraved on his face. "I'm so sorry! You can sleep here, Y/N," he told me. I slowly opened my eyes and guided them towards his, making eye contact. "No, it's fine, I'm comfortable here," I replied, closing my eyes again. "Please?" he begged and I questioned why he so badly wanted me to sleep in my bed rather than on the couch. "I'd feel horrible if I let you sleep on the couch. Especially in your own room. Seriously," he explained.
I guess he did have a valid argument and I understood where he was coming from. I opened my eyes again and looked at his big puppy-dog eyes. He smiled gently at me. "Fine," I stated, "if it makes you feel better". I got up and made a groaning sound. I slowly strolled over to the bed at a snail pace and Armin got up. "No, you can stay," I ordered. "But I'll feel rude if I do-" he started, as I interrupted.
"No. Just sit beside me, there's plenty of room. I don't take up all of that space anyways."
To be honest, I was being selfish. I put him in an awkward situation just to please my own likings. He felt uncomfortable. Sitting beside a sleeping girl was probably very strange for him. The only girl he had ever been okay with sitting beside was Mikasa, at least to my knowledge. I think that that was because she was almost like an older sister to him. I watched as his mind raced, trying to decide whether he would obey my request or deny it, and sit on the couch instead. He averted his eyes towards the ground and his face turned beet red.
I could tell that he was flustered. I put my hand on his frail, boney shoulder. "I won't mind," I reminded him, unaware of what was really bothering him at the time. Armin was now put into a situation where he could not say no anymore. I was pressuring him. So, he proceeded to sit back down on my bed. Then, I climbed underneath the covers and closed my eyes, letting my long eyelashes trickle down upon my high cheekbones. Armin couldn't keep his eyes off of me. I could feel his glare upon me. Finally, getting a close look at me, he noticed all of my features in detail. His mind must have been racing. Maybe he thought that I looked absolutely beautiful and for the rest of the free period, he did not even glance at his book. He spent the time admiring me. Obviously, I don't know for sure whether this is what happened but little did he know, this one simple moment had just changed his life forever.
