Chapter 41: Leaving Soon
I blacked out. I don't know what happened after we took off our clothes. I slowly regained consciousness, opening my eyes. It was the daytime. Light glared harshly through the crack in the window boards. I sat up. Levi wasn't there. That couldn't have just been a dream, right? I slipped out of bed and it made a creaking noise. I noticed that I wasn't wearing anything other than my underwear and bra. So it did happen. Too bad I didn't even remember it, considering it was my first time. I snatched my clothes off the floor and put them on. Once I looked presentable, I left my room and walked around, looking for at least someone's presence. I entered the main room where Levi and Erwin sat. I was immediately uncomfortable. Levi put his cup of tea down on the wooden table.
"Sorry, did I interrupt something?" I questioned. "Only the silence. You're up early," Erwin replied.
"It's early?"
"Yes," Levi butted in. He told me he didn't want to wake me. Erwin was in the room with us. Did he know then? I looked over at Erwin who was watching the ground with a firm frown placed on his face. "Why so grumpy Erwin? Wake up on the wrong side of the bed?" I teased, trying to lighten up the mood. He looked up, immediately changing his expression to something more calm. "Oh no, I'm sorry. I was just thinking about something," he told me with a smile. Erwin got up and walked out past me. I asked him where he was going and he responded with, "I just remembered I have something to do!"
Weird. I sat down beside Levi and he leaned away. "Do I smell or something?" I asked half-jokingly. "Oh no, sorry," he hummed.
"Is it something about last night?"
"I feel bad for forcing myself on you like that. All of that was so wrong. I'm twice your age, Y/N. Even you should understand that we'd never work out. You're a smart girl, you know. Neither of us should have given into our senses," he explained. Last night was so fuzzy. I didn't remember everything but it felt awkward asking him about it.
"Oh. I-I don't remember almost anything from last night. Did we do anything, um, extreme?"
"Oh no," he laughed, "don't worry. You passed out as soon as you got my clothes off. We never went further than what you were awake for. I hope you don't think I would have ever done anything heinous to you while you were asleep. When you lost consciousness, I just decided it was maybe best to go to bed. I went back to my room, after that. But Y/N, I still want to be your friend. I want to be close to you, just maybe not in that way. You're a beautiful girl that has a lot of amazing attributes. I think that you'll find someone lovely someday. As much as I'd love to start things up with you, I have to recognize that it wouldn't be right for me to deprive you of a future you may have had with someone closer to your age." It was a bit disappointing to hear that coming from him, but it was fair. I was grateful that he wanted to at least be friends with me. "Sure. I'd like that," I said with a smile as I scruffed his hair. He playfully swatted my hand away and smiled at me. "Hey, stop it. I have to remain looking my very best. You better not mess anything up," he laughed. I'd never seen him like this before. I liked this version of himself.
Three more weeks had passed and I was actually enjoying my time with the Corps. Levi and I had become close friends. We would crack jokes at each other, every so often, and he'll smile. He had a beautiful smile. I was so sad I'd be missing it when I was gone. I was to return back to the trainee camp at the end of the week. I was really going to miss Levi. He still acted like his angry, hostile around the others, but around me, he was real. I felt like it would suck being around a bunch of childish teenage boys again. They never seemed to express feelings, and that's what I wanted. I sighed, laying back in my chair. "What's wrong?" Levi asked as he was dusting a shelf behind me. "I'm just thinking about Friday. It's the end of August, you know," I replied.
"So?"
"I'll be leaving, remember? This was just a special experience."
"O-Oh."
He sounded sad. "I forgot about that. I forgot you weren't actually one of us," he muttered. I told him I'd come back after I graduated, completely forgetting that I was never really a part of that time.
"Hopefully. Let's just enjoy our time together right now," he said.
"Hey! The sun's setting. We should go watch from the roof," I exclaimed. I got up and grabbed his arm. He guided us around the building looking as lost as Hanji did on the first day, before he found the stairs. We walked up the stairs and he opened a rooftop door. I climbed through the door and he climbed up behind me. It was gorgeous. I never knew nature could look that beautiful. All sorts of smooth colors collided in the sky, casting an array of hues onto the world. The clouds glowed, reflecting the sky's colors. The trees around the building cast shadows all over the grass-covered ground. I to the edge of the building and sat down, letting my legs dangle off. Levi sat down beside me. "Y/N, I'm going to miss you a lot. I've never had anyone be closer to me than you have. In fact, I've never really interacted with anyone like this, other than you," Levi said.
"Well, don't be saying your goodbyes just yet. I'm not leaving until Friday," I reminded him.
"I know but today's Wednesday."
"Yeah, we have a day."
We stayed up on the roof for an hour or so just taking in the beauty and enjoying each other's presence. Eventually, we went back inside when it got too cold. Levi gave me a hug goodnight and left to his room. I got under my covers and lay there thinking. I was upset. I couldn't sleep. Around midnight, I heard a quiet knock on my door. It startled me. "Y/N, are you awake?" a voice whispered through the crack in the door. I closed my eyes and pretended to be asleep. The person came in. They were clearly someone large and heavy, considering how loud their footsteps were. They stopped and knelt down at the side of my bed. I could feel their breath on my face.
"Y/N, I have a confession."
It was Erwin's voice. I kept my eyes closed. I wanted to know what he was going to say.
"I really like you. I think you've been an amazing addition to the Survey Corps. You've changed this place, in a good way. It hurts me to think about how you'll be leaving. I wish I had the guts to confess my feelings to you before now. It's gonna be hard seeing you leave, but anyway, I just wanted to say that you're a really good person. You should join the Corps once you graduate, so I can see you again. I promise I'll protect you from the titans if that was what you worried about," he whispered. Erwin sat there for a minute, before getting up and leaving. Right before he had the chance to close the door, I spoke.
"Goodnight, Erwin."
My whisper hit his ears. He closed the door and walked back to his room, quickly.
