Chapter 26: A Burger and a Book

I decided to take Armin to my favorite restaurant R/N*. We drove there in the grey van my dad had left parked in the driveway at home. Armin was fascinated by the idea of automobiles and wouldn't stop asking questions during our ride to the restaurant. He was so curious about everything. The whole trip there was him asking a river of questions. What's this? What's that? My head hurt from trying to think of the right words to say. Finally, we made it to the restaurant. We undid our seatbelts and got out of the car, walking towards the restaurant's entrance.

"Hey what's–"

I cut him off out of frustration. "We're here! Just no more questions until we leave, okay?" I demanded.

"Fine."

I opened the door and walked inside. A waitress came and brought us to a table near the back. Armin sat down, looking around the room in awe. "Wow, this place is so fancy!" he gushed. I giggled.

"Just look at the menu and pick what you'd like to try," I told him. "The what?" he asked. I picked up the menu and opened it, handing it to him.

"Here. Just pick something."

"So many options..."

He furiously flipped through the pages of the menu and ended up on the last one. "I wanna eat a margarita. It sounds good!" he yelled. I started laughing loudly and had to cover my mouth to stop myself from causing a scene. "What? Did I make a mistake?" he asked, clueless. "A margarita is an alcoholic drink. Firstly, you can't eat it and second, you're not old enough to drink it, where we are. Here," I said as I flipped to a simpler page with pictures.

"I suggest you pick something from here."

"Okay."

Eventually, the waitress came back to our table. "Have you made any decisions?" she asked.

"Yes I'll have a F/D** and a F/F***."

She scribbled my order down in her notebook and looked at Armin.

"And you, sir?"

"A burgeral," he replied confidently.

"A what?"

He opened the book and pointed at what he was saying. "It's called a burger," she corrected. I looked at the waitress feeling second-hand embarrassment for Armin.

"He'll have water and a veggie burger. Just hold all the strong stuff."

"Okay."

She wrote down his order, nodded, and walked away.

"You're silly. You make me laugh Armin."

He covered his face. "Stop it's embarrassing," he mumbled. "No, it's fine. You're doing pretty good considering you're not even from this time," I reassured him. He removed his face from his palms.

"Alright."

"While we're waiting for the food you're allowed to ask whatever you feel like asking."

"Really?"

"Yes."

The meal conversation wasn't ideal but it was okay. If we got past the constant questioning period now then we'd have time to talk about other stuff later. Finally, the food arrived.

"Wow, it looks like a fancy circle sandwich."

"Okay, I'm not even going to try to explain basic food. Just eat."

He nodded and thanked me for his meal before digging in. At first, he couldn't quite figure out how to eat it but I told him to pretend it was a normal sandwich. Once we finished eating lunch, I paid for the meal. "That was good Y/N! Thanks for taking me out here. It was fun," he said gratefully.

"No problem. We're gonna go somewhere else now."

"What? I thought that was it."

"No, silly. That was just lunch."

"You really don't have to do anything else."

"Stop, just let me do stuff for you. Please," I begged. He looked at me with an uncomfortable look. We got up and left the restaurant, getting back into the car. "Anything you're looking forward to doing? Remember, today's about you," I reminded him.

"Don't say it like that, it makes me feel weird."

I smiled at him and leaned over the armrest to give him a hug.

"Listen, we're gonna have lots of fun doing whatever you'd like. So tell me, what do you enjoy doing?"

"Well, I enjoy being with you."

That was obvious, so I asked him what else he liked doing and he replied, "reading. I don't really do much." "Great!" I exclaimed, "so we'll go to the book store!"

"But I don't have money from your time. It's changed, right?"

"Yeah, it has. Don't worry about it, it's on me. It's your birthday so I have to spoil you," I insisted. He gave me a frustrated look, then finally agreed to go along. We drove to the nearby S/N****. I held the entrance door open for him and he walked in, thanking me. When we got in, he looked around in amazement.

"Wow, this is enormous. It's the size of the King's castle."

I laughed at him. "Sure it is. Now, what type of books do you like?" I questioned.

"All of them."

"Wow, so then you like adult books then. Pornography?" I taunted. Armin rushed towards me, covering my mouth with his hand. "Y/N, that's a bad word so you shouldn't say it! Of course, I don't read that kind of content. You didn't have to be so straight forward," he snapped.

"Okay, sorry. Let's just look around. These days, we have some information about the book on the back of it, so you don't have to just choose any random book."

"Really? That helps so much! I don't know why people from my time haven't thought to do that."

Armin ran around the store for, quite literally, hours. I lay in the kid's area on some bean bag chairs, listening to music on my phone.

"Y/N! Y/N! I think I found some books I like!" he babbled. I opened my eyes and looked at him. He was carrying four books. They weren't very colorful but I'm sure they were good reads if he chose them. I pushed myself up and took out my Airpods.

"Okay, let's go pay."

"I can't let you pay for all of them, Y/N. Can I owe you when we get back? I don't really know how we'd convert the cost but I'm sure I could figure it out."

"No need to owe me. For the billionth time, I'm paying for everything today. Relax, I have the money."

He handed me the books and I paid. I handed him the bag outside the store and we hopped back into the car. "So, where to next?" I asked. He shrugged his shoulders. "Fine," I said, "this one will be a surprise."
