Chapter 14: A Strange Awakening
Everything was quiet for around three hours and I was indulging in some peaceful sleep. It was comforting not being alone, knowing that someone was by my side. Around 4:00 am, I was woken up by a sudden blistering screaming sound and the bed shaking vigorously. I turned over and opened my eyes, seeing the shape of what seemed to be my good friend Armin. He was shrieking loudly and shaking like a ticking time bomb. I sat up and grabbed onto his shoulders, in a panic.
"What's going on? What's wrong with you?"
He didn't answer me. He just lay before me, yelling and kicking. I was so scared and confused. I crawled over the top of him and lit the lantern on my night table. Then, I sat on his chest and grabbed his flailing arms, pinning them down to the bed. He looked as if he was about to be killed. His hands escaped my grasp and began to claw onto the skin on his face. He was crying and trembling.
"Armin, what's wrong, are you okay?" I asked calmly, trying to compose myself. He tried speaking between sharp, frantic breaths but he kept getting choked up. A flood of tears rushed down his cheeks. They sparkled and glowed in the light of the lantern. I could tell from the way he looked at me that he was trying very hard to communicate. I placed my hand on his forehead and felt it. It was burning hot and covered in beads of sweat. "You have a fever," I guessed. I pried one of his hands off of his face and I held it tightly.
He gasped loudly and his eyes shot nervous looks around the room.
"You're burning up, Armin. Can I help take some layers off of you so you don't continue to overheat?"
He sniffled, still gasping for air, and shakily sat up. He nodded, giving me permission to help him out. I grabbed onto the bottom of the black sweatshirt and I pulled it up and over his head. I then tucked my fingers around the waste-band of the sweatpants he was wearing and I inched them down his hips, then his legs and ankles. I refrained from sneaking a peek at his area down below. It wasn't appropriate to do so, at the moment.
Although, I did admire the rest of his petit structure. He had a cute body that any girl would kill to have. It wasn't the time to be thinking about that, though. I threw my right arm over his shoulder for comfort and I put my left hand on his chest. His heart was racing faster than I thought was even possible. "I think you're having a panic attack," I stated. His breathing began to slightly pace. "I... be-... because... it... happens a lot," he wheezed. "You mean this happens frequently?" I asked with concern. "Y-... yes," he replied. I hugged him, squeezing him tightly. Poor boy. Waking up to this kind of event on the regular must have been miserable and exhausting.
"Well, what do you usually do during these kinds of situations? Does anyone in your cabin help you?" I interrogated further. He shook his head. "J-Jean and... and Eren... they yell... they yell at me," he uttered between breaths. I could not believe that the people in his cabin would not do anything to help him and that they would be so cruel to let him suffer alone. How dare they just yell at him. After all, he couldn't help it. They probably didn't even know what was going on, to be honest.
I rubbed his back and he rested his head on my shoulder.
"Here, how about you lay down and try to breathe deeply? I'll rub your back and play with your hair, okay?"
He nodded and wiped away previous tears which were quickly replaced with new ones. I leaned over him and blew out the lantern, then lay down beside him. I ran my fingers through his hair and rest my forehead on his back. I didn't mind the aroma coming from the sweat that just happened to be crawling all over his back. I was just trying to be there for him, a friend of mine. He was someone I cared deeply about.
It took a while but around what I would have guessed to be 5:30 am, he finally fell asleep. I stayed awake and I held onto him tightly, making sure not to let go for even one second.
