The match was about to begin. The crowd was making a lot of commotion. She had to struggle a lot to find her seat. Her big bag was making it harder to get through and she was clutching it tightly as if it had diamonds in it.
Somehow she finally found it and sat down on it with a 'thud'. Just in time for all the players to make their way onto the field. The crowd went berserk as soon as they saw team Inazuma. She stood up eagerly too to get a better look.
She wasn't all that concerned with the greater scheme of things. Her eyes eagerly searched for the one person they always did. Even outside the context of this, no matter where she was or with whom, her eyes wandered only until they found its favourite person and then rested on him giving a cue to her lips to form a smile.
Her heart leapt up as she finally spotted him. He was standing in the row with the rest of his team members, looking solemn and prepared. She now joined the rest of the people around her, yelling encouragements but hers were only for him.
The match began and he was amazing as always. As he zoomed and dashed through the field, her heart brimmed with pride as her gaze closely followed his every action. He was in his most majestic form when he was on the field and it never ceased to captivate her. She forgot all the ruckus around her, the loud noises and occasionally getting bumped into by overly excited people, her entire being focused on him with unbreakable concentration.
By half-time, things calmed down a bit as all the players slowly walked out of the field. They were all panting, absolutely drenched in sweat. He acquired a towel around his neck and wiping his face with it but every time he was done, sweat dripped down from his spiky hair and he had to do it all over again.
Between all of it, he found a moment to look in her direction. It would have been hard to spot her from the crowd of blue jerseys but she stood up promptly, waving at him. He smiled, knowing she had made it, that she had been watching him, cheering for him.
He remembered the time when he had jokingly said how he needed her cheering or he wouldn't be able to play as good. He didn't mean it, he never expected her to drop everything to attend every single match of his, they had many. But she took it to heart and it always surprised him how she managed to make time for it no matter what.
Second half was brutal and it was really neck and neck for a while but in the end, team Inazuma won, thanks to his precise and powerful goals. It came as no surprise to anyone, a team with such an amazing ace striker could hardly ever lose. Once again, he was the star of the match.
There was commotion again, even more so than before as the crowd roared in the excitement of their team winning and it went on for a while. The minutes after the match always seemed like an eternity to her when she was eagerly waiting to reach him and tell him how amazing he was, as she always did. Every time she talked as if she was seeing him play for the first time.
She could never get tired of praising and complimenting him as he stood there listening, not knowing what to do as she went on her long awestruck ramble. Occasionally, a teammate would pass by and after overhearing her would joke, "We did some things too. " She would laugh awkwardly but she didn't mind because they were all one big group of friends and she had gotten used to them joking around. She knew they meant it in good fun.
Finally, the commotion died down and she quickly made her way to the field. Everyone had gathered on the side of the field and were just relaxing before going into the locker rooms. Some of them were sprawled on the grass, resting and catching their breaths.
"There she comes!" A couple of them exclaimed as they spotted her. This was a routine they were all too familiar with.
"Gouenji, your wife is here. " Someone said, making him turn to her.
"And the big bag!" Someone else yelled and then they did a small chant for it, "The big bag! the big bag!"
The big bag had become an entity of its own. She brought it with her to all the matches and its most noteworthy content was a first aid box. When everyone retreated to the locker room and they were the only ones left, she sat him down on the bench to treat his injuries. It was almost impossible to get out of a soccer match without some cuts and scrapes given how often they fell.
She brushed aside the locks of hair from his face. By now the hair gel was washed away with sweat and they were now falling back to their original state. She examined his face, his arms and his legs. She then sat down on the grass and dished out the first aid box and opened it to reveal a variety of creams, band-aids and anti-sprain spray.
"You do know we have first-aid boxes here, right? Big ones. " He commented with an amused smile.
"I know. " She looked up at him and smiled.
He never understood the secret of the first-aid box or her knowing smile every time he interrupted her with this same comment. He didn't know what it meant for her to take care of him with her own hands and the immense satisfaction it brought her.
But he did know that for whatever reason, she couldn't resist doing it. So he complied with every instruction she gave him and quietly watched her post-game rituals and let her do whatever she wanted.
So if she wanted to pat-dry his face with a fresh towel, he didn't stop her and tell her he would take care of it, if she decided the wound on his arm was big enough to warrant bandaging, he let her. All the while watching it all unravel with an amused smile.
When she was finally satisfied with her work, she collected all the items laid out on the grass, back into their container and packed up the first-aid box.
"Okay, now you can go. " She chirped, currently filled with delight at having successfully completed her task.
He didn't leave immediately but stopped to look at her face that was currently glowing with happiness. Time after time she repeated the same set of steps and each time when she was done she had the same glow on her face. He didn't understand how her happiness was renewed every time with the same intensity but he knew he liked seeing her that way.
He would kiss her later, he thought.
