25: Love, Lost

Before you read this, go to wooharuharu 's blog and read the fic she wrote for my otp Goukira in her inazuma x reader book. This is her plot and I really liked it and felt inspired by it so I wrote it again in the way I visualised it. This plot entirely belongs to her and she gets full credit for it.

Kira stared at the clock as she waited for Gouenji to come home from work. Her eyes were fixed at the second's hand of the clock as she followed it going in circles over and over and over again. She had lost count of how many minutes had passed this way, she seemed to be hypnotised by the movement of the needle.

When she woke up from her trance she realised Gouenji was late. It was 11:30 PM and he should have been home half an hour ago. Why did he have to be late that day of all days? She was eagerly waiting to tell him an important news. She had rehearsed it in her mind countless times how she would tell him she was pregnant and what would be his reaction. She could see it all too clearly, the disbelief in his eyes at first and then the wonder travelling to his lips as they stretch into the biggest smile ever.

Every time she pictured that she couldn't help but smile herself. She would have looked like a fool to an outsider, frequently smiling out of the blue over nothing but she knew her expectations would be true. Now if only he would come home already!

The clock now struck 12 and now she was almost dying with anticipation. She got up and began pacing back and forth. Finally, a few minutes later the doorbell rang and she rushed to open the door.

As soon as he took off his shoes and came in, Kira wrapped her arms around him tightly. He was surprised by it but he smiled as he reciprocated.

"How come you're up so late? " He asked as he took her face between his palms.

"Of course I was waiting for you!" She answered him without missing a beat.

"You really missed me today, huh?" He smiled.

" As always. " She answered as she prepared herself to give him the big news.

But before she could do that she noticed the smile on his face fade a little and that worried her.

"What happened?" She asked immediately.

He didn't respond but she was sure she could sense a hint of sadness in his smile. She wanted to press further to tell her what was going on but the next moment he picked her up and carried her to their bedroom.

He gently lay her down and then got next to her. Propped up on his elbow, he ran his fingers delicately through her hair making her feel drowsy. She was so lost in that moment, she forgot everything else, including the news she was supposed to give him.

As her eyelids grew heavy, his gentle touch guiding her to a world of dreams she heard his faint voice next to her ear,

"Remember, I love you. "

She was already dreaming, she thought and even her dreams were only beautiful when he was with her in them, his voice telling her how he loved her.

...

The harsh sunlight falling directly on her face woke her up in the worst way. She was surprised to realise that the curtains weren't drawn. Usually, they were and only when Gouenji woke up did he open them. By that time Kira was usually up too.

She sat up and looked around and realised he was already gone. She couldn't hear his footsteps anywhere in the house. This was odd since he usually didn't leave so early. They usually had breakfast together and this is when she had intended to tell him the news. Well, now she would have to wait until the evening again. It was a bummer but she didn't mind. She freshened up and began her day as usual.

In the afternoon, she was finally free from all the work that was her daily routine and this was when she decided to check her social media. She sat down on the sofa with some snacks and then began the endless mindless scrolling, looking at everything with half-hearted interest. Someone showed off their new cat, someone else was bragging about their latest vacation trip, nothing that was worth retaining for a longer period of time.

Then the scrolling came to a sudden halt as her eyes spotted a familiar face standing next to an unfamiliar one.

"Soon to be my wife ❤" The caption read as Gouenji stood next to a woman she was sure she had never seen before in her life. Her gaze seemed unable to tear away from that picture as she remained frozen in shock for several seconds. How could this be, she thought, when he was with her last night. The way he held her, the way he picked her up and carried her to their room, the way he stayed next to her until she fell asleep. Was it all a lie? Was everything else before that a lie? Was he ever in love with her at all?

The more questions ambushed her mind the more they escaped through her eyes for lack of an answer staining her cheeks. She threw away her phone in anguish, didn't know where it landed or what became of it and hid her face between her hands and cried as long as it was physically possible.

The doorbell rang unexpectedly. She quickly wiped her tears and went to attend the door. To her surprise, it was Gouenji who had arrived home early. She was sure he could tell she had been crying but to break her heart even more, he did not acknowledge her state or even her for that matter and walked straight in.

He took a seat at the kitchen table and set out some papers on it. Kira came over and sat across him as she took the papers and studied them for a while.

"Divorce papers? You want a divorce from me?" She looked up at him in shock but was only met with an unkind gaze.

"Oh I see, now that you've found someone else, you don't want me anymore. " Kira remarked, her voice laden with sorrow.

"So you know already. That means you also know that I don't love you anymore. " He said in an unsympathetic voice. He didn't seem to care that the tears had once again begun cascading down her face, making her cheeks glossy.

"I want you to sign these asap." With that, he got up and began walking away without even considering to take a second look at her.

"I will. Just tell me one thing, " She spoke again with some difficulty, "Why did you do this to me?"

Now he turned to face her but no softness was to be found in his expression,

"You really want me to spell it out for you huh? Then hear it loud and clear, I don't love you anymore. Days on end, you're just the same. How would I not get bored of you!?"

Kira was sure she heard her heart break. Her chest tightened and there was a dull ache rising. She couldn't even breath, she was crying so incessantly now. But he said what he had to say and then walked away.

Having no other option, she did as he had asked her and signed the divorce papers. Next, she packed her bags and decided to leave the house. As she walked past him towards the door she looked at him one last time,

"Are you happy with your decision?" She asked him.

"Yes. " He replied curtly and walked away from her.

Tears welled up in her eyes again but she wasn't going to let her be weak anymore. From then on, she would only have to be strong. She took a deep breath to control herself and walked out.

...

Time went on, years passed one by one and soon their son was 5. But to Kira, it only felt like yesterday when she left Gouenji's home and set out on her own path. It was difficult at first, she had no idea what she would do or where she would live but eventually one by one things fell into place and their condition got better and better. Now they lived a content life in their comfortable apartment.

During this time, Kira never looked up what Gouenji was up to. She didn't try to find out what he was doing or where he was living or who were the people in his life now. He was a distant memory, his name long forgotten by her lips, his face faded from her mind like a mirror covered in dust, no longer able to show anything. Her eyes no longer wasted away tears for him.

She would have liked for it to be that way but every once in a while she was reminded of his existence when her son would ask her in his innocent voice where his father was. She always lied that he had gone abroad and because of his busy schedule couldn't find time to return to them. What else could she possibly tell him? He was too young for his mind to be tainted with stories about broken relationships and betrayal.

She often noticed the families at the park that were there for a picnic with their kids. A couple and their children laughing and joking, enjoying their time together. On these occasions, the sadness that she always kept buried deep within her heart sprang up with force. She wondered when would she get to have her happy family, if ever at all.

One day she and her son were returning from the park talking among themselves, making plans for dinner. But all discussions halted as they reached their front door and Kira found a seemingly familiar man standing there waiting for them.

And when he turned, she was met with shock as it was in fact Gouenji as she had suspected.

"Long time no see, Kira. " He commented and smiled.

Before Kira could react , the kid chimed in, " Mom, who is this?"

Gouenji then addressed the kid, "Hello boy, what is your name?" He asked gently.

"My name is Gouenji Shuun. Nice to meet you. " The kid happily announced.

"Shuun? That's a nice name. " Gouenji answered.

Kira's frustration had now reached its limits and she blurted at once,

"What the hell do you want now? No, wait, how did you find out where I live?" She frowned.

"Can we go in and talk?" He said and looked at her full of expectations.

"What makes you think I'll let you in after everything?" Kira immediately retorted, "Go away, we don't need you here. " She then moved forward and pushed him out of the way to open the door.

"I understand that. I deserve this. " He muttered in a low voice.

"Well, then you will also understand why I am about to close this door in your face. " She said as she did exactly that.

However, this behaviour did not deter Gouenji from trying to talk to her. He waited outside her house almost every day, he sometimes tried to talk to her in the park. But every time his efforts were met with a cold shoulder. This went on for a week or two and Kira's demeanor towards him did not change. Shuun, on the other hand, became used to his presence around them and often tried to talk and play with him to which Gouenji always enthusiastically agreed.

But this sight was unbearable to Kira. She didn't want Shuun to get used to Gouenji's presence or else she was afraid he would have his heart broken too. She kept hoping Gouenji would eventually leave on his own and give up his attempts to win her over again but when that didn't seem to happen finally one day she snapped.

"Get away from my son!" She yelled as he pushed him away when the two were playing in front of the apartment. Thankfully, there wasn't anyone around to witness the scene.

"He's my son too. " Gouenji answered seriously. Kira then sent Shuun inside before continuing the conversation.

"Oh yeah? Where was this care all these years ago? When you left me to fend for myself while I was pregnant? " She was enraged now, her wounds reopened.

"I didn't know. " He quietly mumbled.

"And would that have stopped you? Would you have changed your decision and stayed with me? Would it have changed the fact that you didn't love me?"

"I always loved you. I still love you. " He immediately answered.

"Why are you saying all these things after all this time? Why are you back? Go back to your wife. " As soon as she mentioned his wife, she felt her heart breaking all over again. She thought she had made peace with everything but it turned out it still bothered her to think about him with someone else.

"She isn't my wife anymore. "

"So your wife left you and you think you can come back to me, speak two words of apology and I 'll forget about everything you've put me through? If you really think that then you don't know me at all. " With that, she was about to leave when Gouenji suddenly exclaimed loudly,

"If you would just listen to me once!" He continued speedily, " There was nothing between us. She was never really my wife! That marriage was a sham. To protect you from Fifth Sector. " He took a deep breath after he was done saying all of this.

Kira stopped dead in her tracks as she heard these words. She slowly turned to him, her face wearing an expression of absolute shock. She took a step closer to him, her attention now completely on him. Gouenji continued,

"Yes, it's true. I had to pretend to marry her because I knew when I would leave Fifth Sector and they would find out I had actively worked to bring them down they would come after my family for revenge. She was already intending to leave Japan and move abroad for her father's surgery, all she was waiting for was to collect the money for the surgery. Fifth Sector doesn't have a reach outside of Japan so she would be safe so I arranged the money for her father's surgery in exchange for pretending to be my wife. "

Kira was left speechless for a while. It took her a while to process all of it.

"I did it all for you, Kira. Because I can't imagine anything ever happening to you. " He added and anticipated her reaction with a lot of hope.

But instead of a smile, tears rolled down her cheeks once again as she stood there unmoved.

"Why didn't you tell me?" She quietly said.

"I knew you would never agree to it. You would try to come with me without fearing for your life." He answered.

"Don't you dare give me that excuse!" She came closer at once and pulled his collars as she looked at him with eyes full of hurt and rage.

"How can you say you did this to protect me when you have hurt me more than anything Fifth Sector could have done? You don't know the pain I've been through. You say you love me then why did you do this? Why? Why?" She continued as she began hitting him on his chest with her fists as she bellowed.

Gouenji caught her hands and stopped her and then pulled her into a tight hug. Even though she struggled against it a lot, once he succeeded she remained that way.

"I know the pain you've been through because I've been through it too. " He told her in a low sombre voice as he now began tearing up as well,

"Trust me if it wasn't absolutely necessary I would never even think of leaving you. The last night we were together, you fell asleep but I was awake all night and with each passing hour my heart sank more and more because I knew the time to leave you was approaching. I held you close and I wished that the clock would tick at the same hour endlessly but still, at last, I had to let you go. " He took a deep breath and continued,

"And then one day I found out I had a son. I was so surprised that you never mentioned you were pregnant and it made me regret even more everything I said to you. I rushed to get you back but then Endou and Kidou forced me to stay calm and let it be and explained that it was best for the both of you. "

Kira had now quieted down significantly and was only lightly sobbing as she closed her eyes and listened to him,

"I thought about our son all the time. I wondered what were his first words, when did he first walk, when did he laugh for the first time, does he look more like me or like you. He was growing up so fast and I couldn't see him go through all of these milestones and it broke my heart over and over again every time I thought about it. "

A teardrop fell from his eyes and landed on Kira's face.

"And then finally the day came when I was free from Fifth Sector and I immediately began the effort to find your whereabouts. When I finally found you I couldn't wait to see you and Shuun. I saw you two in the park first. I was so ecstatic to see him for the first time ever. I just wanted to hug him and tell him he is my son. "

Kira was still sobbing but now for a very different reason. She had never thought that he was suffering that way. She now cried for him and all the years that the Fifth Sector took away from them, all the needless pain it put them through.

"Can we please get together again? I want you in Shuun in my life. I need my family back. " He pleaded one last time.

Kira let go off the front of his jacket that she had been holding onto tightly out of anger and encircled her arms around him. She gently clutched the back of his jacket and with a deep breath, she stopped crying. Her anger was gone and the love she had once held for him that was locked away in some dark corner of heart was revived once again.

They stayed like that for a while and then made their way inside. Shuun had fallen asleep on the couch and Kira woke him up for dinner. Together they prepared dinner just like a family as Shuun waited at the dinner table. After a long time, there was laughter at the dinner table as they talked and enjoyed their meal together. Afterwards, Gouenji helped Kira do the dishes and also to put Shuun to sleep.

After every chore was completed, Kira was wondering what to do next when Gouenji suddenly picked her up just the way he had once done all those years ago.

"What are you doing?!" She exclaimed, caught off-guard by this sudden action.

"You must be so tired. " He commented as he carried her to the bedroom.

He lay her down on the bed and lay down next to her.

"I won't leave you this time. Or ever again. " He whispered in her ear as he stroked her hair delicately just the way she always liked. She really was exhausted from all the crying and wailing so she fell asleep in no time.

In the morning, he woke her up with a kiss on the cheek. She turned to him and smiled.

"So, what's the plan for today?" She asked with amusement.

"First things first, I want to ask you... " He answered as he removed her dishevelled hair from her face, "will you marry me... again?"

"Couldn't you have asked this at a better time? When I'd have looked better?" She said in a sleepy voice as she rubbed her eyes.

"This is the best time. " He said as he kissed her.

...

epilogue

Kira put on her white wedding dress once again and she was still fond of how she looked in it. They were having a very little and simple ceremony with just their friends. It was only a couple of days ago when Gouenji had asked her to marry him again.

As she turned around, he walked in just then but as soon as he laid eyes on her he stopped dead in his tracks, his mouth agape in wonder.

Kira walked up to him and encircled her arms around his neck and giggled at his reaction.

"Still the same. Just as beautiful as I first saw you in this dress. " He commented, running his hands along her cheek. She didn't respond and only smiled as she blushed.

They then looked to their side and noticed Shuun standing there in his tiny tuxedo looking up at both of them.

"You two look just like the picture on the cupboard. " He announced in his cute voice.

"What picture?" Kira asked.

"The one with both of you dressed exactly like this. " He clarified.

At this Kira suddenly remembered, "Oh! I suppose I put it there and forgot about it. " She then added, "Wait a minute! Does that mean you already know he is your father?"

Shuun didn't say anything but nodded his head.

"Well, that saves us a lot of explanation. " She remarked as she sighed in satisfaction.

Gouenji bent down to level with him, "So now that you know you will call me 'dad' from now on. Okay?" He smiled.

"Okay, dad. " He answered and smiled too.

Gouenji pulled him into a hug and Kira watched them with admiration as she thought about the fact that she finally had her happy family.
