14: New Year's Sucks! Change My Mind
A/N: Here's an impromptu New Year's fic. Enjoy!
"So what are we doing for New Year's?" Gouenji casually asked without looking up at Kira as he scrolled through his phone.
"Umm...nothing?" Kira replied carelessly as she flipped through a magazine on the couch beside Gouenji's.
Gouenji's eyes shot up at Kira as soon as he heard her.
"What do you mean 'nothing'?!" He exclaimed.
"I hate New Year's. It's a pointless celebration." Kira now closed the magazine and turned to Gouenji.
"Since when?!" Gouenji exclaimed again. He was surprised at this new revelation.
"Since now!" Kira answered slightly agitated. She used to celebrate the day when she was a kid but over time she began to see it as really futile.
"So we're not celebrating?" He confirmed anxiously.
"I am not celebrating. If you want to do so, go out with your friends." Kira suggested gently.
"But I wanted to celebrate... with you." He mumbled the last two words barely audibly as he looked away. However, Kira caught it and her heart couldn't help but warm up.
"Well if you want it so much then I guess we can do something. " She smiled warmly. Gouenji responded with the same gesture and after that silence fell upon the room again. Kira reopened her magazine and Gouenji continued scrolling on his phone.
But just after a minute or two, he spoke again, "This is not okay!"
"Huh?What?" Kira directed her attention towards his phone first because she thought he was reacting to something he saw on it.
"How can you not like New Year's? It's....it's....NEW YEAR'S!" He seemed very agitated.
Kira was greatly amused by his reaction. She thought to continue the conversation and with a chuckle, she replied, "So what?"
"IT'S NEW YEAR'S!" Gouenji repeated even louder.
Kira went into a full fit of laughter upon hearing this.
"Raising your voice is a great argument." She managed to speak between laughing.
Gouenji regained his composure and began calmly, "The point is... you need to realise it's just as good a day as your favorite Halloween... or... Christmas."
"Never."
"I will prove it to you!" Gouenji frowned.
"I'll look forward to it then." Kira commented sarcastically and with that she got up and left, still chuckling a little at the events that had just transpired.
...
The day finally came and all day Kira was curious as to what Gouenji had planned. She had seen him smirking by himself as he made plans and arrangements and whenever she caught him doing so he would just get quiet and leave abruptly. Kira was greatly enjoying all of this but she also knew none of that could sway her.
"Get ready. We're going out." Gouenji announced in the evening.
"Out?In the crowd?" Kira asked anxiously.
" Just do as I say. Don't worry, you'll have a good time." Gouenji reassured. Kira shrugged and followed his instruction.
Gouenji took Kira's hand and they started walking. Kira noticed he had a picnic basket in his other hand. This piqued her curiosity even more, she couldn't wait to see what he had planned.
They made way to a high building, which was closed except they were granted special access to the place.
"So this is what he was arranging." Kira thought as they stood in the elevator which was apparently taking them to the top.
The elevator opened to what Kira found out was the rooftop. Kira was spellbound by the view the place offered. Her feet moved as if on their own as she stood with her hands on the railing of the transparent fence thoroughly taking in the vast cityscape beneath them twinkling with lights.
"This is unbelievable." She gasped. When she turned she found Gouenji had already set down a picnic mat on the floor. Eagerly anticipating his next move, she sat down on it.
"What are we having for dinner?" She asked with excitement.
"Your favorite." Gouenji answered casually and brought it out of the picnic basket.
"Pizza!" Kira shouted happily.
"And..." He brought out the next thing.
"Dumplings!" Kira yelled even louder at the second box.
They began eating, looking at the view in front of them as they did so, and followed it with some hot chocolate. Afterwards, Kira got up and stood near the fence again. Gouenji stood behind her and enwrapped her in a hug. They remained like that for a while looking ahead. Kira was feeling euphoric, lost in the magic of the evening.
"It's almost midnight." Gouenji whispered as he glanced at his watch. As the countdown began he turned Kira to face him. "Happy New Year" he whispered as he pulled her into a kiss. The fireworks began erupting all over the city drenching them both in multicolored light.
As they pulled apart and things died down a bit, Gouenji finally posed the question with much anticipation, "So? Think New year's amazing, yet?"
Kira stepped closer than before and linked her arms around his neck. She sighed as if she was taking an important decision. She then looked into Gouenji's eager eyes and finally replied,
"You are amazing. New Year's still 'meh'."
