10: Sleep
My amazing friend SJRocky wrote this amazing prompt for me which had me dying as soon as I saw it and I so love her for this! Here's the snippet resulting from that prompt.Hope you enjoy!
"Why do you kick so much in your sleep? Are you constantly dreaming about soccer?"
"I-I was not. " Gouenji didn't think he would have to jump to his defence as soon as he woke up.
"Yes you were! You must have kicked like 10 times throughout the night. " Kira countered.
"So instead of sleeping you were counting my kicks?" Gouenji looked at her in confusion.
"I don't sleep at night. " Kira gestured dismissively.
"What?Why?"
" I just... don't." Kira shrugged.
" Are you like a, what's the word for it, insomniac?" Gouenji asked with heightened curiosity.
" No, it's nothing like that. I do sleep, just not at night. " Kira answered prodding the dying campfire with a stick.
" So you were up all night? Sitting here all by yourself?" Gouenji inquired further with widened eyes, " Now I feel bad, if I had known I would have kept you company. " He looked down sheepishly.
"I was just looking at the clouds, waiting for them to rain. " Kira said with a sigh and then frowned, "But they never did. "
"You do realise that would have been equivalent to apocalypse here in this wilderness?" Gouenji looked at her with a questioning look as he gathered their belongings. They had decided to go on a weekend camping trip. Although Kira didn't care for spending a night between grass and bugs but she couldn't say no when Gouenji said he wanted to do this.
"Are you sure?" Kira tilted her head as if asking him to entertain the thought.
"You hate wet grass. " Gouenji answered in a deadpan voice without stopping.
"Oh well then...nevermind. " Kira answered and began helping him.
They put their backpacks on and started walking back to where their car was parked. It was a thirty minutes walk from where they had set up camp. The sun was barely above the horizon but the forest seemed to have come alive even before that. The birds' ceaseless chirpings and some occasional groans and grunts from the animals could be heard tearing through the otherwise tranquil atmosphere.
"So why do you do that?" Gouenji asked after ten minutes of silent walking.
"Do what?" Kira asked, busy avoiding a group of pebbles.
"Not sleep at night." Gouenji reiterated.
"You're still thinking about that?" Kira chuckled as she glanced at Gouenji's curious face.
"Seriously, tell me." He asked again with eagerness.
"First you tell me why do you kick in your sleep? What tournament were you trying to win?" Kira teased.
"I was n-not..... kicking." Gouenji replied, flustered.
"Do you think I'm lying?" Kira stopped and turned to face him.
"Yes...I mean...n-no...I mean....come on! Just answer my question." Gouenji found it hard to answer.
Kira chuckled in response, "It's okay, I know you probably don't realise this." and then she started walking again, this time with a little skip in her gait. A couple steps she turned back again, only to realise Gouenji was still standing in his place staring at her with a sulking expression.
"Oh come on, if you won't walk with me how will I answer your question?" Kira called out to him, trying to cheer him up.
She then linked her arm in his as he reached beside her and they started walking again, "You want to know why I don't sleep at night? Because night time is the best time of the day." She announced happily.
"That's not true. You can't play soccer at night." Gouenji replied matter-of-factly.
"Yes of course you can!" Kira retorted immediately.
"But it's funner during daytime." Was his reply.
"Well.... okay....fine! But I don't play soccer so it doesn't apply to me. So night time is the best." She then continued, "It's so quiet and peaceful when the whole world is asleep it feels like I am the only one there."
Gouenji smiled faintly on hearing this, "That does sound nice." He commented.
"See! I told you!" Kira exclaimed enthusiastically breaking Gouenji's trance.
In a couple of minutes they reached their car and unloaded their backpacks into it.
"I'm so tired." Kira sighed as she reclined her seat back and put her feet up on the dashboard, closing her eyes.
"I wouldn't doubt that considering you were up all night." Gouenji remarked as he started the engine.
"Shhh.... don't talk to me now." Kira replied without bothering to open her eyes.
...
"It's finally raining..." Kira mumbled which immediately caught Gouenji's attention. He listened intently while keeping his eyes on the road.
"Shuuya... stop playing soccer... and look... it's raining." She mumbled again.
"I cannot wait to tell her she talks in her sleep." Gouenji said to himself as he chuckled.
