Chapter 7 - Safety Not Found

"To be honest, I still can't believe what happened."

Bright yellow stars shone in the sky while the moon was rising and starting to go over the buildings, which usually signalled that it was now at least 7 PM.

A pair of guys were walking on the sidewalks of the beautiful city, just walking home from work together.

"Yeah, really, me neither." Zedaph replied. "The fact that not one, but two people were assassinated in the higher floors by two different assassins in only two days is pretty absurd to be just a coincidence."

"I'm certain that at least someone in the company helped them, since shutting down the security and not even leaving a trace of evidence is almost impossible." Impulse agreed. "But that would also mean that there's a traitor among us."

"Yeah, that's the most logical theory, but not one that we want to think about." Zedaph sighed. "Also, where's Tango by the way? He usually walks home with us."

"I'm not sure." Impulse responded, looking at the crowded roads of the city. It wasn't midnight yep, so the place was still pretty crowded and populated. "I heard from Stress that he apparently went home early for something."

"Oh, I see. Well, he does do this occasionally, but he usually at least tells us about it first." The other stopped at the front gates of the house complex they just arrived at. "Well, here's my stop. Good night, Impy, stay safe on your way, alright?"

"I will." Impulse replied. "Good night, Zed."

Zedaph went into his complex, and Impulse was now alone. With a small sigh, he waved at his friend for the final time, before continuing to walk on the crosswalk.

If he were to be honest, he was a bit scared. He knew that he was safe in the extremely crowded night city, since if something did happen to him everyone could witness it, but he still had this lingering paranoia.

Maybe, no, he was certain it's because of the back to back incident that just happened. It was probably just the stress and anxiety of having two people just murdered in a so-called 'safe and secured' location. He was probably just tired from the events of today and yesterday.

He stopped in front of the street zebra cross. Cars filled up the roads, it was a traffic jam. The lane was pretty much not even moving, and there were no places to cross the road.

"Was there an accident or something...?" Impulse mumbled to himself, sounding a little troubled. He sighed, knowing he can't take his usual route home. He will have to take the long way through just the crosswalks.

He just continued walking on the crosswalks, the loud noises of traffic was the only thing that could be heard that night. The loud noises of cars beeping, all the drivers are probably frustrated that they have to wait so long.

5 minutes... 8 minutes... 10 minutes... 20 minutes.

Impulse has been walking for a pretty long time, but the line of traffic is still there. This was the only other route heading to his destination, but there was an alternative, a dangerous one, though. The shortest way there would be going through the alleyways, the shortest, yet most dangerous way.

The city alleyways are the most unsecure location in the city. Not only are they dark, it is commonly said that tons of illegal dealings go down in them, and it is even rumored that there's a whole blackmarket running in the alleyways. There are also a lot of sightings that take place in the alleyways.

Safe to say, the alleyways are the last place Impulse would like to go through, especially at night time.

Despite that, he stopped and looked at one of the entrances to the alleyways.

It was pitch black, he could barely make out anything inside them, and there were only a few visible lights. Just looking at the darkness gives him chills down his spine. He knew he was going to regret this.

Sighing one final time, he braced himself and entered the alleyways, disappearing into the night.

"So, uh- sir, who is the person I will be needing to eliminate?"

"All the information about her target is written here. The Deadline is two days, so I trust you have enough time to do the job."

"...

"Aque Corp... Head of Marketing...

"ImpulseSV."

BANG!

Impulse's heart nearly stopped as a gunshot fired right behind him. The bullet nearly missed him as it hit the trash can right beside him, the trash can falling over and the trash spilling everywhere.

He froze, before turning around quickly to see who fired the shot. What he saw was a guy in a grey and red hoodie wearing red goggles.

'Red Bullet.'

'Red' readied his gun for another shot, trying his best to hide how much he was shaking. He looked at Impulse, one of his dearest and closest friends, who looked back at him in fear, obviously not recognizing him in his hitmen attire, which 'Red' was very glad he didn't.

With more than a heavy heart, he re-aimed his gun, the silence in the alleyway making it more painful than it already is. He knew needed to just end this as quickly as he could, as he knew he wouldn't be emotionally able to carry out the hit if the moment went on any longer, and he already accepted the job, so he couldn't back out.

"H-hey there- You're the one t-they call the Red Bullet- right?"

Starting a conversation to try and find a peaceful resolve... that's just like him. 'Red' didn't respond, cautious that Impulse might recognize his voice.

Impulse though, kept talking. "I-if you're after me, that m-means someone must've ordered a bounty on my h-head, huh?" He tried his best to keep his voice from cracking, he was definitely scared, he knew it would almost be impossible to get out of the situation alive, but he still tried. He took a few steps back, getting ready to just run.

'Red' still didn't respond, having an internal conflict with himself, the hand holding the gun shaking. He silently took a few deep breaths, trying to keep focus and not let his emotions get to him.

I can't do this- I have to do this- He's my friend- I've done this multiple times by now, it's just a usual thing by now- But I just- I can't- Focus, Tango, focus. You've accepted the mission, you can't back out now.

...

That's right, I can't just chicken out of this now, it's do or die.

He gripped the gun tighter, bracing himself for what he's about to do. He took another deep breath, aiming his gun.

BANG!
