Chapter 24 - Safety Unacquired

"So- I'm supposed to get him out of the building- without anyone noticing?" Zed repeated, a bit in disbelief. "How the heck am I supposed to do that?"

"Well- I don't know!" Gem whisper-yelled back. "But you need to do it somehow, since we probably don't have much time left!"

The two were once again talking outside the Aque Corp building, in the shade of a nearby, short and small alleyway. From their expressions alone, you can tell that Zedaph seemed at least a little baffled, meanwhile Gem looked pretty frustrated.

"A-are you very certain that this is necessary? Like- what can they do-"

"Of course this is necessary! Zed, from what we heard yesterday, you know that the CEO isn't planning on playing nice, he wants to murder him for gods sake!" The homicide investigator argued.

The other looked incredulous. "But- once again, what am I supposed to do? Go up to him randomly and tell him; 'Hey! The CEO wants your head on a platter, you need to get out of here at once!'? No, right?"

"Well, you just gotta convince him to follow you somehow, without anyone else seeing!"

"And I'm telling you that I don't know how!"

"You just need to figure it out, I'm sure you can!" Gem sighed, in a conversation-ending tone. "Just- try, alright? It's getting pretty late, so just go, before you're late!"

The light blond was not at all convinced that this was a good idea. He just turned around, shook his head, and muttered a barely audible "fine." in an unsure tone. "I'll... try, I guess."

And as he started walking away, he just heard a whispered "Good luck!" behind him.

What in the world am I supposed to do...?

He sat at his desk, though he was not at all focused on work, and was instead just tapping on his desk, with his mind going all over the place.

How do I walk up to him, and somehow convince him that I'm not just pulling some elaborate prank or something?

He sighed without words as he tried brainstorming for ideas, staring blankly at his computer screen. At times like these, he wished that either Impulse or Tango were with him, or better, but even more impossible, both.

Tango would be great moral support in sticky situations like these, giving ideas that are incredulous and impossible, but entertaining to think and laugh about. Impulse would also perhaps give out a joke or two, but potentially also give some great ideas that may actually work, and probably offer to help him as well.
But alas, one was behaving strangely and really trying to avoid all contact with him, and the other was straight up missing, so he had to deal with this by himself. This thought hurt him more than he thought it would. He's been so distracted by all this double agent-detective business, that he forgot how much he actually missed his friends.

*Beep!*

He slightly jumped as his phone's ringtone rang. He turned it on to check what notification he got.

Meeting

7:50 - 10:00

Oh right- there was a meeting scheduled for today-

He had totally forgotten about it until now. He turned the phone back off. He had about 10 minutes to prepare now.
And then, an idea popped into his mind. Since he was going to be attending the meeting, it also meant he was going to be there. He thought about it for a bit, before reaching into his drawer to grab a sticky note, and his pen. He hesitated for a little, before writing something on it quickly, and then slipping it in his pocket.

He then stood up, and ran out of his office, shutting the door behind him.

He walked into the official meeting room. He looked around the room, and identified some of the people that were already in the room. Stress - Head of Finance, Beef - Head of Operations, ...Impulse... Head of Marketing, And Mumbo - Temporary deputy head of Finance.

He took a seat next to the other deputy head in silence, though it's not like there was much chatter in the room anyways. He glanced slightly to him, before turning back, and waited for the meeting to start.

More and more people eventually arrived, and the seats started getting filled up pretty quickly. The meeting finally started when the CEO himself, alongside his right hand man and now secretary entered.

He fidgeted to himself as the meeting went on, going in and out of listening. The meeting was mostly about tightening the building's defenses, work stuff, and other work stuff, or at least that's all he got. He was taking minimal notes, but that was basically just to keep his hands occupied and his mind running, cause he feels like it's about to just malfunction any second.
He wanted to just go through with his plan, but as time went on, the sickening dreadful feeling of anxiety kept haunting him. Had he not heard the conversation from yesterday, he wouldn't've really been suspicious of anything, but because he did, it's now impossible to miss the way the secretary kept looking at Mumbo, a hint of nervousness and strange hesitation on his face. It also made it hard to just focus on what the CEO is saying regarding safety measures and whatnot, since he knows about his real plans.
Needless to say, just the presence of the two high figures made him hesitate a lot. He knows there's not much reason for the others to warrant suspicion on him, but he's also paranoid enough that he hasn't gone through with his plan in fear that someone may see.

But then, he finally got an opportunity an hour into the hellhole of a meeting. The CEO told everyone to take notes of the new tech that's going to be added to each floor starting the next week. In the timeframe when everyone was looking down and the CEO was looking away, he got out the sticky note he had written on the hour prior, and slipped it to the man beside him.
Mumbo quietly shot him a questioning look, but took it anyway when he returned it with a reassuring look.

Hello - so I know we've never talked that much before, but I just wanted to warn you that something (or someone) may be after you. I don't know if you'll believe that or not, but please trust me on it. After this meeting, it'll maybe be good if you leave the room immediately, and then tell Stress that you need to leave work early - just give any excuse why. Someone will be waiting for you outside the building. Make sure it's the right person, they have ginger hair, hard to miss.

I can't say why you need to do this for now, but I'll just say that you're not as safe in this building as they make it out to be.

Don't share this note around. Do not show it to anyone else.

As the other was reading the note, he pretended to be busy writing, though he was just moving his pen up and down in the air, while staring blankly at the still empty piece of paper. He saw out of the corner of his eye when the moustached Brit finished reading, and sent him another questioning look, which this time was also combined with worry.
