Wow, It has been a wild ride.

This is the final chapter of Smokescreen.

Thank you so much to everyone who has read, voted, commented and messaged me about this book. I appreciate you all so so much. I had no idea anyone would be interested in what started in my head as a single scene between Alec and Adelaide and grew into a multi chaptered book.
Writing this was a way for me to escape from real life for a moment, so thank you for allowing me to do that every time any of you interacted with me, or the characters.

Book 2 will begin the moment Season 2 starts airing, I already know where I want Adelaide's story to go, but in order to do that I have to see where the show takes the other characters (Alec especially) first.

I'll update this book when the Second Book is published, so it can be added to your libraries if you wish :)

This chapter is also twice as long as a normal chapter because I know I haven't updated in awhile...I've been dreading ending it, sorry!

Also, unedited as usual. I'll go back and edit eventually ahaha.

Please let me know what you think!

So again, thank you for reading.

'We should go.'

Adelaide hated having to break the quiet spell of comfort that had settled over them. She could practically hear Alec blaming himself internally for Jace's actions and she hated it. But even more, she hated Valentine for what he was putting her family through.

Alec heaved out a long sigh, straightening himself up from his slumped position, blinking dazedly as though he had forgotten where they were.

'Yeah, I know.'

Adelaide pulled herself to her feet again, and after a moment of hesitation Alec did the same. 'Any idea where they all went?'

'I have a few ideas.' Adelaide admitted. 'I know Isabelle would have found a way to get past Raphael, but there are only a few places they could safely take Camille, and even fewer where Camille would willingly go.'

'Magnus.' Alec realised.

Adelaide nodded, 'I'll call him, just to be sure.'

Alec waited as Adelaide pushed her phone against her ear, listening to the familiar ringing.

'And to what do I owe the pleasure?'

'Magnus.' Adelaide's lips twisted up in amusement at Magnus' snarky greeting. 'I'm guessing your mood pertains to a certain vampires arrival?'

'You guess correctly. Your other friends are here, safe and unharmed.'

Adelaide let out a breath she didn't know she had been holding. 'Thank Raziel.'

'I expect you'll be arriving soon?'

'Yeah, Alec and I will be there shortly.'

'Very well, see you soon.'

Adelaide shoved her phone back into her pocket, and turned to face Alec. 'They're with Magnus, Camille's with them.'

'Great.' Sarcasm coloured Alec's tone as his own phone rang shrilly.

'Izzy... yeah we're on our way... Adelaide spoke to Magnus... Yes- I'm fine.'

Adelaide raised an eyebrow at Alec's sharp reply as he hung up the phone.

'What was that about?'

'Isabelle calling for backup.' Alec shrugged. 'We should go.'

Adelaide caught Alec's arm as he began to walk away. 'Hey, wait-'

Alec gave her a questioning look, turning to face her again. 'What-?'

His words were cut off as Adelaide reached up and covered his mouth with her own, tangling her hands in Alec's dark hair. After a startled moment, his hands slid into her own dark tresses. Adelaide tugged on Alec's hair, eliciting a small groan of pleasure from his mouth.

Adelaide immediately pulled away, cheeks flushed and lips swollen.

'What was that for?' Alec asked, looking much happier than he had been previously.

'I just – I love you. You know that, right?' Adelaide's voice was quite, shy almost, and Alec noticed.

Alec smiled at her, a smile reserved for the people he cared about only. It rarely made an appearance and when it did, Adelaide's heart never failed to miss a beat.

'And I love you. Always.' Alec kissed her quickly again.

'We really should go.'

Alec smirked. 'I know.'

The two walked swiftly towards Magnus' lair, their hands never leaving each other.

Even as Alec smiled down at her, Adelaide couldn't quite shake the feeling that everything was about to go wrong.

*****

Adelaide and Alec were met with an impatient looking Isabelle as they neared Magnus' home.

'Finally.' She sighed.

'You got Camille out then?' Adelaide asked despite already knowing the answer.

'Of course, did you doubt me?'

'Never.' Adelaide flashed Isabelle a grin.

'Good to see you too, big brother.' Isabelle uttered sarcastically.

Alec looked unamused. 'Isabelle.'

'Kill joy.' Isabelle mumbled as she turned and led them into the place Adelaide called home.

Only the three of them stopped in their tracks as they noticed Magnus and Camille, kissing against a table.

Magnus looked confused, angry and startled all at once as he pulled away from the vampire, his eyes quickly finding the new additions to the room.

'Well, this is awkward.'

Adelaide gave Magnus a stern look, one he returned with amusement, gesturing to her lips.

Adelaide flushed.

'Where's the book?' Alec was immediately all business as he walked towards Magnus.

Magnus glanced at Adelaide. 'It's complicated.'

'Clearly.' Adelaide had joined Alec's side, Isabelle following behind them quietly.

'I have it.' Camille sounded smug, and it made Adelaide want to bash her head against a wall.

'And she's graciously offered it in exchange for her freedom.' Magnus explained.

'Graciously?' Adelaide mumbled.

'And her freedom requires a lip lock?' Izzy spoke up for the first time, eyes narrowed at Camille.

Magnus pointedly ignored her.

'We don't negotiate with prisoners.' Alec was in front of Camille now.

'Prisoner?' Camille looked up at Alec in amusement. 'I beg to disagree. You see, I'm your only chance at saving the world. You need me.'

Adelaide felt jealously flare up at the way Camille was staring at Alec with intense eyes.

'You're in a room with three shadowhunters, you're lucky your still breathing.' Adelaide bit out through clenched teeth. 'We're doing you a favour.'

'Well if it isn't my favourite Morgenstern.' Camille smiled dangerously, speaking as though she hadn't realised Adelaide was there. Her dark eyes flicked from Adelaide to Alec, understanding lighting her expression like a flame.

'She certainly has a type, doesn't she Magnus?'

Adelaide immediately tensed, seeing what Camille was implying.

'Camille.' Magnus' voice was hard.

'Tall, dark and handsome? I seem to recall someone else who also fits that description. Of course, you abused that friendship to get what you wanted...' Camille continued, her voice dripping with poison.

Alec seemed to catch on to what Camille was hinting at, his whole body tensing at the thought of Adelaide and Raphael together.

'I seem to have touched a nerve.' Camille smiled, her expression dark. 'You two look good together Adelaide, it's a shame it won't last, what with your record of running away... you'll be out of here in no time.'

'Say that again and you won't last.' Isabelle was fuming, watching as Camille's words affected her brother and best friend.

'I don't have time for this. Where's Clary?' Alec seemed to be in a hurry to get away from Camille, and Adelaide couldn't blame him. She was manipulative and nasty when provoked, and Adelaide's presence was enough to goad her into showing her true colours.

Magnus pointed towards the back room, and Alec left without another word, Adelaide following him quickly, but not before shooting Camille a poisonous look.

'Alec! Did you find Hodge?' For the first time, Clary seemed genuinely happy to see Alec.

'Yeah. Valentine has the cup.'

'What?' Clary glanced between Alec and Adelaide waiting for them to explain what had happened. 'We're too late.' Clary mumbled to Simon who was frowning. 'Where's Jace? Is he okay?'

Adelaide noted the guilt creeping into Alec's expression and decided to speak up. 'He went after Valentine himself. Gave Alec and Luke the slip.'

'It's like he's totally lost it.' Alec continued. 'I tried to stop him but he wouldn't listen.'

'We need to find Jace.' Clary seemed panicked. 'He's in a dark place we don't know what he's going to do.'

Alec caught Clary's arm as she tried to walk past him. 'Luke is out looking for him. Jace wants us to stay on our mission. That means we have to find the book.'

'He's right. We have to wake up your Mum.' Simon looked from Clary to Adelaide, who avoided his eyes at the mention of the parent she didn't know.

'It's our only way to stop Valentine.' Clary realised with a sigh.

'Ready to sign?' Camille strode confidently into the room, the perfect picture of arrogance and poise.

'Take us to the apartment, give us the book, and then you can have your pardon.' Simon stated confidently, amused at Camille's expression falling slightly.

Camille looked annoyed at the turn of events, her eyes flicking around the room of shadowhunters, seemingly looking for an escape, when she found one she smiled, though it looked forced. 'I wouldn't have it any other way.'

'Good.' Simon smirked, and Adelaide had to admit that the expression suited him now he was confident in whom he had become. He and Clary walked away and Adelaide made to follow until Camille spoke again.

'Adelaide?'

'What?' Adelaide snapped, turning warily to face the smirking vampire.

'Just how hard do you think Raphael took your betrayal? After all, I know the two of you were ... close.'

Adelaide saw the expression on Alec's face change and she snapped, lunging towards Camille, fully intent on killing her.

But Camille was fast, and apparently so was Alec, as he had latched his arms around Adelaide's waist, pulling her body flush against his, his grip tight and unrelenting.

'You bitch. I know what you're doing!'

'Do you?' Camille laughed as she left the room.

'Hey, hey - calm down!' Alec ordered, and it was only then that Adelaide realised her whole body was humming with anger and agitation.

'I hate her.' Adelaide growled lowly.

'So do I, but she's right Adelaide - we need her.'

Adelaide relaxed, and Alec hesitantly let her go. She turned to face him, seeing his stoic expression.

'Don't listen to her.' Adelaide begged. 'She hates me and wants to see me suffer, and she knows using you is a way to do that.'

'Just how close were you and the vampire?'

Adelaide noted the way Alec couldn't say Raphael's name and she fought back a smile at his obvious jealousy. 'Raphael and I were friends - good friends. Camille hated how easy it was for me to get Raphael's trust, because he's never trusted her. She's jealous.'

Alec's expression melted into one of understanding. 'Okay.'

'Okay?'

'I believe you. I still don't like the vampire, or that you're friends with him but...'

Adelaide hugged Alec tightly. 'I was worried it was working. That she was making you think the worst.'

'She was.' Alec admitted. 'But if you say nothing happened, then nothing happened.' Alec kissed the top of her head. 'C'mon, let's go find this book.'

*****

Camille looked smug the entire time it took their odd group to get to Camille's apartment. Her expression faltered slightly when she caught sight of Adelaide and Alec's joined hands, but quickly returned when Magnus gestured for her to take the lead.

'I thought the underground parking was nice.' Adelaide heard Simon say to Clary, and Adelaide had to agree. Camille's apartment was lavish, luxurious and expansive.

'Wow, you've got a lot of books.' Alec commented to Camille and they entered what appeared to be a library.

'I've got a lot of time on my hands.'

'Welcome home madam Belcourt.' A vampire appeared out of the shadows and Adelaide felt Isabelle shiver.

'This place creeps me out.' She commented lowly.

'Yeah. Let's check the perimeter.' Alec looked at Adelaide and Isabelle, the two girls nodding.

'Good idea. If I know Camille she'll have a trick or three up her sleeve.' Magnus shooed them away.

'I'll take the left, Alec you take the right, Adelaide you check the back and we'll meet in the front.'

Alec and Adelaide nodded at her, and after squeezing her hand gently, Alec let her go and made his way towards the right side of the building.

Adelaide smiled softly and glanced up at Isabelle, who was already looking at her as she made an obscene gesture at her. Adelaide flushed and Isabelle giggled to herself as she walked away.

Adelaide did as Isabelle had asked, patrolling around the back and finding nothing out of the ordinary. After double checking Adelaide made her way to the front of the building, frowning in surprise when Alec and Isabelle were nowhere to be found.

Maybe they'd already gone back inside? But no, that was breaking protocol and Alec and Isabelle were always careful when it came to checking the perimeter because one slip up meant someone could get in or out unnoticed.

Adelaide's phone buzzed and she glanced down at the screen, her heart lurching as she saw Jace's name flash up, indicating she had a message from him.

Get Clary, and get out of there. You need to leave!

Panic bubbled up inside her and as Adelaide turned around, it increased tenfold. She stopped in her tracks at the familiar face leering at her from the edge of the street. Her heart rate increased slightly and as the figure came closer, she pulled out her seraph blade.

'I wouldn't do that if I were you.' The man commented pleasantly. It was the same man who had cornered her what seemed like forever ago when he had delivered a message from Valentine.

'Give me one good reason I shouldn't remove your head from your shoulders right this second.'

The man's expression didn't falter. 'One good reason? Very well, it's behind you.'

Adelaide watched as his eyes flickered behind her and she spun around, her heart dropping into her stomach.

No.

A man was holding Alec captive, blade at his throat. Adelaide was living in her worst nightmare, and she couldn't help but notice that it had all come full circle. The night she had run away she'd found Alec, unconscious with a knife to his throat and now here they were again, only this time both of them were very aware of what was happening, which somehow made it all so much worse. In a sick twist of fate, the male who was holding Alec was the same man who had broken into the institute a year ago, and judging from the grin he was giving her he was all too aware that she knew who he was.

'We have to stop meeting like this.' He sneered. 'What's it been, a year?'

'Fuck you!' Adelaide spat. 'What do you want? Where's Isabelle?!'

The first man appeared beside her and Adelaide forced herself not to recoil in disgust.

'We just want you to come quietly; no one has to get hurt. Your friend is with the others.'

'Bullshit!'

'Boss' orders.' The man seemed disappointed and Adelaide felt bile rise in her throat. 'Get moving or her loses his head.'

Adelaide glanced Alec before she nodded, her voice hard. 'Lead the way.'

Adelaide was forced to follow Alec into Camille's after her only weapon had been taken away, and though she was walking freely, she could feel the presence behind her. Adelaide knew that if she tried to make an escape, there was no way she'd reach in time before one of them paid the price.

So she did what she was told like an obedient animal.

'... Fight me and watch your friends die. See, you are strong, but they make you weak.'

Adelaide felt sick at the familiar voice, and she knew then that they were too late.

Alec and Adelaide were shoved into the room and Jace's eyes immediately found hers, she could see the indecision in his expression and it frightened her.

'Well if it isn't my eldest daughter, I was wondering when I'd be seeing you again.'

'Never still would've been too soon.' Adelaide spat.

Valentine sighed. 'You are so much like your mother.'

'Let us go. You can have the book. We won't be able to stop you without it.' Clary sounded defeated, her eyes moving between Valentine and Jace constantly.

'Ah Clarissa, also like your mother. Willing to do anything for those that you love.' Valentine turned to Adelaide again. 'Like your mother and your sister. I'm touched but...the book was never part of my plan. I want you to wake up your mother. I know that you three will join me eventually. It's fated.'

Clary's expression twisted into one of pure hate and Adelaide willed her to contain herself. Attacking Valentine would do nothing for them.

'You're insane if you think we'd ever join you.' Adelaide spoke up, her voice shaking in anger.

'I suppose if you say it, it must be true.' Valentine smiled dangerously. 'But out of you, your sister and your mother – you'll be the first to join me. I know you better than you know yourself Adelaide.'

Valentine turned to Jace again. 'Now, are you ready?'

Jace looked at the faces of those around him, from Magnus and Isabelle to Simon, Alec and Adelaide, and then finally, to Clary, whose eyes were shining with unshed tears.

Jace lowered his seraph blade and Adelaide knew Valentine had won.

'If I go with you, promise me you won't hurt them.' Jace's eyes didn't leave Clary.

'You have my word.' Valentine agreed.

'This is insane!' Clary protested.

'I'm sorry Clary.' Jace choked out.

'Jace... What are you doing? You can't be serious? Valentine is wrong! You're not like him! You're not- You're not-!'

Jace was shaking his head. 'You don't know that Clary – you don't know that!'

'Let them go.' Valentine ordered and Alec immediately reached for Adelaide, placing his hand on the small of her back as he started to make his way towards Jace as did Isabelle and Adelaide. From the corner of her eye Adelaide could see Simon restraining Clary.

'No, get back! Get back!' Jace warned them, and for the first time outside of a training room his seraph blade was trained on them.

Alec went to take a step forward again. 'Alec I mean it!'

'Jace...' Clary breathed as the circle members began disappearing back through the portal they had seemingly arrived in.

Jace's wild eyes met Adelaide's own. 'You have to understand, I know you do.'

Adelaide could feel eyes on her even as she looked at her brother. 'I do Jace. But I also understand that there is always a choice. Just make sure you're making the right one.'

Understanding flooded Jace's face as he nodded. 'I'll see you soon.' His eyes flickered to each of them briefly, staying trained on Adelaide the longest as Valentine tugged him backwards.

'Adelaide.' Valentine smiled pleasantly. 'My offer to you still stands.'

Adelaide felt Alec's hand on her arm, holding her in place as though he was scared she might follow her father and brother into the pulsing violet portal, and perhaps he was worried that that was exactly what she was going to do. But she couldn't – not this time.

And then they were gone.

And suddenly Alec's grip disappeared as he reached out, catching Clary around the waist. Clary quickly shoved him away as the portal closed.

'What are you doing!?' Clary hit Alec's chest angrily, tears beginning to fall down her cheeks.

'Saving your life. If you enter a portal not knowing where you're going you'll be stuck in limbo forever.' Alec explained.

Clary looked to the doorway where the portal once was and all the fight seemed to leave her body, Alec caught her, hugging her to him as small cries left her lips.

Adelaide made her way to stand by Alec, wrapping an arm around Alec's waist and one around Clary.

Adelaide met Magnus' eyes and he shot her a warning glance so powerful that Adelaide had to look away.

*****

When they reached the institute, Alec and Adelaide watched on as Hodge was roughly shoved around and escorted away from the institute by two murderous looking shadowhunters.

Betrayal was a bitter pill to swallow.

'Magnus is almost ready to wake your mother. Are you ready for this?'

Adelaide looked up at Alec. 'Not really.' She admitted. 'I don't even know her.'

'But she'll want to know you.'

'You'll be there, the entire time, right?'

'Where else would I be?' Alec asked as Adelaide rested her head against his chest.

'Thank you, by the way, for stopping Clary from...'

'It's what Jace would have wanted...' At Adelaide's look he added, 'and I don't exactly hate her anymore. She's become a constant in our lives, we can't afford to lose anyone else.'

'I'm proud of you, of who you've become.' Adelaide mumbled into his jacket.

'I'm proud of us.' Alec hugged her tightly.

'Uh guys? Magnus is ready to wake Jocelyn.' Isabelle appeared, looking fondly at the two of them.

Adelaide sighed. 'Let's get this over with.'

'Do you really think this is going to work?' Clary asked as Magnus opened the book of the white.

'Let us hope.' He sighed as he began speaking in a language none of them could clearly decipher.

The glow around Jocelyn disappeared and Luke was the first to react, catching Jocelyn, adoration written all over his face. 'I got you.'

'Luke!' Jocelyn immediately hugged Luke, looking dazed but unbelievably happy.

Luke set Jocelyn down, and as the older woman looked around the institute in awe until her eyes fell on Clary.

'Mum!'

The two women reached for each other, embracing tightly.

'I missed you so much!' Clary breathed.

'I'm so sorry I didn't tell you about your past-' Jocelyn choked out.

'No, no I have had enough for one day. We can talk about that later. Right now I just... I really need my Mum.'

Jocelyn hugged Clary tightly and Clary looked over her mothers shoulder at Adelaide who was trying to blend in with the shadows, but unable to due to the tight grip Alec had on her.

'Alec... I can't...' Adelaide breathed out quietly so as not to draw attention to them.

'Yes, you can and you will.' Alec mumbled back, watching as Clary stepped away from her mother again.

'Mum, there's uh – someone I think you should meet.' Clary smiled, eyes drifting to Adelaide.

'Who-'

Adelaide tensed as Jocelyn's eyes met hers. The older woman seemed to be having trouble breathing as she walked towards Adelaide, Clary watching and Luke by her side.

'Oh my god...' She whispered, her voice breaking.

Jocelyn looked at Luke who nodded slightly.

'Adelaide?' Jocelyn breathed.

'Hi...' Adelaide didn't know what to say. She didn't know this woman, and even though she had carried Adelaide for nine months, given birth to her and been there for her earliest moments, Adelaide knew Valentine better than she knew Jocelyn.

But somehow that didn't matter as Jocelyn embraced Adelaide, her body shaking with sobs. Adelaide, somewhat awkwardly hugged her mother back with one arm as she refused to let go of Alec's hand, and Alec himself made no move to let go for which Adelaide was thankful.

'I don't... I don't understand... you're so beautiful! I could never forget that face.' Jocelyn pulled away, rapidly blinking tears from her eyes.

'It's nice to meet you.' Adelaide smiled, and Alec 's heart clenched in his chest as a small tear dripped down Adelaide's pale face.

'It's nice to meet you too.' Jocelyn laughed gently before something seemed to occur to her. 'Does this mean Jonathan...'

'That's a long story, one best told with a few glasses -  or a few bottles - of wine.' Magnus interrupted.

Jocelyn laughed. 'Understood.' She sighed. 'My head is spinning.'

'It's a lot to take in. I can show you to a room?' Isabelle spoke up, smiling kindly at Jocelyn.

'You two must be Lightwoods.' Jocelyn looked from Alec to Isabelle. 'You look like Maryse.' She smiled at Isabelle.

'That's Isabelle and Alec.' Clary explained to her mother who nodded.

'Well Isabelle that would be great.'

*****

'What's going to happen now?'

It was dark and everyone had retired to their rooms for the night hours ago, and somehow Adelaide had found herself in Alec's room, tracing the runes on his chest.

'Hmm?' Alec hummed, Adelaide's tracing having put him in a state of relaxed bliss.

'Where do we go from here?'

Alec sighed. 'I don't know. They're calling my parents back from Idris, I don't know if Max is coming... there's panic within the clave now that they can't deny Valentine's a threat.'

'I hope Jace is okay.' Adelaide breathed after a moment of silence.

'He is. I'd know if he wasn't.'

'True...'

There was silence for a few moments before Adelaide spoke up again. 'If you could go back, and change anything that happened in the last year, would you?'

Alec thought for a moment before answering. 'Yes.'

'What would you change?'

'Not letting you explain yourself, being so angry that I was blind, so blind I couldn't see the truth and the sacrifice behind what you did. I should have let you explain and I'm sorry for that.'

'I'm not.' Adelaide answered, surprising Alec. 'If you weren't angry, If I'd never left, if I'd never created a smokescreen to hide the truth, we'd never be where we are today, which is exactly why I wouldn't change anything. And I don't know about you but...'

Adelaide hooked her leg around Alec, swinging herself up so that she was straddling him. 'I'm happy with where we are right now. And we'll get Jace back, I know we will.'

Alec pushed Adelaide off of him, eliciting a squeal as he flipped them over so he was hovering over her. 'We'll find him. We're family, we'll always find each other.'

Adelaide kissed Alec, still getting as many butterflies as she had the first time. 'Wise words, Mr lightwood.'

Alec smiled down at Adelaide, his eyes beginning to droop in exhaustion as he settled beside her again, pulling her against his chest. 'I love you.' He mumbled quietly.

'Just as I love you.'

Alec slept soundly that night. The day had been exhausting and emotional for all involved and the drama didn't look to be slowing down anytime soon. Valentine would make his move, and when he did there was sure to be catastrophic consequences for everyone in the shadow world. But in that moment, there was nothing to do but wait, and hope, that when the time came they would be ready.

Alec decided that as long as he had Adelaide, he'd be ready to face anything.

Adelaide listened to Alec's even breaths as she drifted to sleep cuddled against his chest, feeling his steady heartbeat thrumming comfortingly against her ears. Finally, Adelaide's eyelids began to close as she too began to dream.

Only unlike Alec, her dreams weren't peaceful. They were confusing and unsettling and when the sun began streaming in the windows and she finally awoke beside her still sleeping boyfriend, one phrase continued to pound against her skull.

I'll see you soon.
