'So, these are all of Camille's things?'
Isabelle looked sceptical as Raphael led her and Adelaide into a storage room away from any prying eyes.
'All I could find.' Raphael confirmed, seeming amused at Isabelle's distrust, his eyes flitting to Adelaide who looked completely relaxed as she leant against the shelving next to him. Adelaide looked up at that moment and caught the vampires eyes, sending him a curious look.
'-but she has hideouts all over the city.' Raphael continued as though Adelaide hadn't just caught him watching her.
'Interesting.' Isabelle sounded anything but interested as she twirled a cylindrical object around. Adelaide felt a smirk form on her face, sensing Raphael's' growing irritation with the beautiful brunette.
'I thought you were looking for a spell book?' Raphael sounded suspicious.
Adelaide bit her tongue, praying that Isabelle didn't give the game away. The two had escorted Simon back, much to Raphael's amusement, before asking to see Camille's possessions. Raphael had questioned Clary's disappearance and Adelaide had hinted that she had left to find Jace, prompting a look of disgust from the vampire, when in reality the red head was locked away inside a casket, waiting for a chance to make her move on Camille.
'We are.' Isabelle confirmed.
'We? And exactly where are your friends?' Raphael turned his gaze to Adelaide.
At that exact moment, Adelaide felt her phone buzz in her pocket, signalling that Simon and Clary were in.
Raphael had obviously heard the sound as he shook his head, a smirk forming on his face.
'Did you really think this stall tactic was gonna work?' He asked silkily, watching as Isabelle tensed up.
'No, but I thought this would.'
Raphael moved before Isabelle's whip could so much as touch him, and Adelaide sighed at the predictability.
'Typical shadowhunter.' Raphael had reappeared further away, glancing at Adelaide who looked unconcerned at the obvious annoyance his body language was displaying. 'Always underestimating a vampire.'
There was a sharp crack as Isabelle flicked her whip again, this time Raphael reappeared beside Adelaide.
'I'm disappointed in you, taking advantage of our friendship.'
'Oh please.' Adelaide rolled her eyes. 'You knew what I had to do.'
A strange expression crossed Raphael's face as he spoke directly into her ear, so lowly that Isabelle couldn't hear his words.
'I'd have done anything you asked, pequeño guerrero. All you had to do was be honest.'
Adelaide felt a cool rush of air as Raphael disappeared

Alec was standing beside a stony faced Jace and a silent Hodge.
Jace hadn't spoken a word to him or Luke, instead choosing to avoid their eyes. On occasion, Alec would notice the expression on Jace's face waver, and more than once Alec wondered if he'd have to restrain Jace from murdering their once mentor again.
Luke paced away from the group, raising his phone to his ear, presumably to contact Alaric and the rest of his pack, and alert them that Hodge had been tracked down and caught.
Alec's eyes flickered to Jace again, and upon noticing Hodge's smirk and Jace's fists tensing, the raven haired man reached out a hand, shoving Jace back firmly.
'Jace, don't.' Alec warned
'I wasn't doing anything.' Jace shook Alec's grip away.
'You were thinking about it.' At Jace's sceptical look, Alec rolled his eyes and added, 'I know you Jace.'
'Do you?'
Jace's words were quiet, but Alec still heard the slight waver in his parabatai's voice.
'Jace...'
'Just leave it, Alec.'
Alec wanted to argue, but Jace refused to meet his eyes. Luke was still on the phone and Alec decided to head over towards the werewolf.
'How's Hodge doing?' Luke questioned as he ended the phone call.
'He'll live.' Alec's tone held no sympathy. 'It's Jace I'm worried about, Valentine really messed with his head.'
'What, at Renwicks?' Luke was frowning.
'Yeah. He went through a lot recently, I thought we had settled it but something's killing him inside. I don't know what it is.'
Luke noticed the note of desperation that had crept into Alec's tone.
'This is all too familiar.' Luke admitted. 'I saw a similar thing with Valentine eighteen years ago. You saw it more recently with Adelaide and now Jace-'
'Jace isn't Valentine. Neither is Adelaide.' Alec's voice had a sharp edge and his expression had become closed off, anger bubbling under the surface.
'Not yet. We've got to keep an eye on them. Especially Jace.'
Alec sighed. 'Alright.'
There was a moment of silence before Luke turned to Alec again. 'Where'd they go?'
'What do you mean?'
Alec felt his heart rate increase as he turned to find Jace and Hodge gone. He immediately began jogging towards the place he'd left them, Luke sticking by his side. Together the two searched, but Alec knew the moment he'd realised they'd disappeared that Jace was long gone.
'They're not here.' Luke called.
Alec sighed and ran a hand through his hair. 'I'll call him, see if he answers.'
Alec waited and waited for Jace to pick up. The phone had reached it's last three rings when the call finally connected.
'Where the hell are you?' Alec immediately yelled down the phone line.
'I'm going after Valentine.' There was a cold, emotionless tone in Jace's voice and Alec felt icy fear grip at his heart. 'Go help Clary.'
'You're acting crazy!' Alec ignored the suggestion. 'Look, whatever Valentine is telling you is not true!'
'That's just it, Alec. It is true. He's my father. He taught me how to fight, not how to be weak.'
'You can't let him control you like this! This isn't you!' Alec tried to conceal the panic in his voice.
'This is me. It's always been me. He raised me to be a killer, and I'm gonna make him regret it. Go help Clary, find Adelaide. They need you.'
'No, no no no, you don't have to do this alright you're- you're not-'
Alec heard the dial tone. 'Jace? Jace!'
'What did he say?'
Alec turned to Luke. 'He said he's just like his father.' Alec's voice was small. 'He wouldn't listen to me.'
Luke gripped Alec's shoulder tightly. 'He'll be okay. You did what you could.'
'It wasn't enough. It's never enough.' Alec sighed. 'I'm going to call Adelaide, see if I can be of any help there.'
Luke nodded. 'I'll get the pack to track down Jace, I'll call you if we find anything.'
Alec nodded, and once Luke had disappeared, he tapped at his phone until Adelaide's smiling face appeared.

'What did he say to you?'
'I'd have done anything you asked, pequeño guerrero. All you had to do was be honest.'
Little Warrior.
Adelaide shook herself out of her state of shock as Isabelle's suspicion laced voice floated into her ears.
'Raphael being Raphael. Don't worry about it. We should go and find Simon and Clary now that Raphael knows what we're up to.'
Isabelle still looked suspicious but she shrugged lightly. 'Let's go kick some vampire ass.'
Adelaide made to follow her until her phone vibrated violently in her pocket.
'Who-'
'It's Alec.' Adelaide frowned. 'Hello?'
'Addy.'
Her name was barely a whisper and Adelaide felt her hands begin to tremble slightly.
'Alec? What's wrong?'
'I uh – It's Jace. I didn't – I couldn't-'
'Alec, you're worrying me. What happened?' Adelaide's heart was in her throat.
'Jace took Hodge.'
Adelaide sucked in a sharp breath. 'Did he-' Her voice shook pathetically.
'No. No Hodge is alive, as far as I know. Jace wouldn't listen to me, I couldn't talk him down-' Alec's voice wavered and Adelaide could hear his quick breaths.
'Alec, Alec calm down. Where are you?'
'Subway station, near Bergen.'
'Stay there okay? I won't be long.'
'Hurry.'
Adelaide hung up and turned towards Isabelle apologetically. 'Izzy-'
'Go.' She smiled kindly. 'Go find my brother, I'll let you know where we go.'
'Thank you.' She hugged the brunette tightly. 'Be safe, and don't give Raphael too much grief. He's harmless – mostly.'
'Only if he behaves.' Isabelle smirked. 'Now go find Alec.'
Adelaide nodded, exiting the small room quickly.

Alec listened to the automated voice begin to speak before ending the call again.
He'd called Jace again right after talking to Adelaide, only to have the calls ring out and go to voicemail. This time, the call hadn't even connected before the generic female voice began speaking, letting Alec know that Jace wasn't just ignoring his calls, he had turned his phone off completely.
'Damn it Jace.'
Alec had tried tracking Jace through the parabatai bond, through their runes and nothing was working. Jace was smart, he'd thought of everything before Alec had even realised what was happening.
'Alec!'
Alec spun around, immediately seeing Adelaide running towards him. He only had to take two steps before she was in his arms again. Alec hugged her tightly, worrying that if he took his eyes off of her for a second she'd disappear again, just like Jace.
'Alec, you're shaking.' Adelaide whispered.
'I know.'
Adelaide's hands rubbed soothing circles into Alec's back, her hands creeping up under his leather jacket.
'What happened?' Adelaide pulled away from Alec slightly, but she kept their finger entwined, reassuring him that she wasn't going anywhere.
'I almost didn't get here in time. Jace... I – I've never seen him that angry Adelaide. He was ready to kill Hodge, without so much as blinking. If Luke and I hadn't of shown up...'
Adelaide swallowed.
'He cut off Hodge's hand, sliced straight through.'
'Oh Jace...' Adelaide whispered with a frown.
'I took my eyes off of him for a second!' Alec jerked away from Adelaide's gentle touch, pacing angrily.
'Alec, this isn't your fault! You can't blame yourself-'
'He's my parabatai; I should have been there! I should have known him well enough to know what he was planning-!'
'He's scared! And he's confused and he isn't himself right now Alec! You couldn't have predicted this!'
'But you did.' Alec's voice had lowered again. 'You told Isabelle and I we had to keep an eye on him. You knew he was going to do this.'
'I had my suspicions-'
'I should have seen it too! I-'
'I only knew what he was planning because I know Valentine.' At the look on Alec's face, Adelaide continued, 'I know how good he is at manipulation; I know how Jace is feeling. He's angry, and confused, he feels hopeless and like something's inherently wrong with him and all these things consume him at once. Emotions like that make you do crazy things, Alec.'
Alec's shoulders slumped as he nodded. 'You're right.'
Adelaide watched as Alec's body slid down the subway station wall. Alec tilted his head back against the hard cement, closing his eyes.
Adelaide pushed herself down beside him, pulling his head down onto her shoulder gently, wrapping her arms around his shoulders and kissing the top of his head, her fingers brushing through his hair softly.
'Stop blaming yourself for everything that goes wrong, Alec.' Adelaide whispered against his hair.
'I'm trying.' Alec's voice was quiet, though she could sense the sincerity underneath the words.
'Good. You can't take the blame. None of this is on you.'
'It's easier to be angry at myself than to begin to accept the alternative.' Alec admitted quietly.
'What's the alternative?' Adelaide frowned though Alec couldn't see.
'That we've been lied to our whole lives. That everything we knew, everything we were taught to believe, is wrong. That the world, our world is so much more messed up than we thought.' Alec took a deep breath. 'That maybe our own demons are more violent than any of the ones we were trained to kill.'
'How did everything get so messed up?' Alec murmured quietly after a few moments eyes still closed.
'If there's one person you should blame, it's Valentine. He's the reason everything bad in the last year has happened. He has to be dealt with, and if the clave won't do it – I think that we might have to.'
Alec straightened himself, looking sharply at Adelaide. 'Don't speak like that. You aren't a killer.'
Adelaide shook her head. 'I don't want to be, but if that's what it takes to make things normal again than so be it.' Adelaide tried to make him understand.
'He's still your Father, he's still a shadowhunter-'
'He's a monster Alec, and we've been trained to hunt and kill monsters. This is no different.'
Alec didn't have anything to say to her words, so he pulled her into his lap, hugging her body to him, because he knew that any second now reality would come calling.
He needed a moment.
One selfish moment where instead of being shadowhunters - instead of worrying constantly that they were seeing each other for the last time - he was just a boy, and she was just a girl.
