Magnus knew something was wrong the second his feet touched the ground of his home.

The usual hum of his protective wards was gone.

'Adelaide.' He whispered.

Before Magnus could even move to check on his shadowhunter, a circle member appeared out of nowhere.

'Warlock, you're coming with us.' He demanded.

'Is that so?' Magnus questioned.

The man snarled at him and lunged. Magnus quickly moved out of the way, placing his palm against Adelaide's bedroom door praying she was still asleep. The spell he uttered effectively locked her inside the room until he decided she could leave.

Magnus could hear screaming from every direction, a young child's cries mixed in with the adult ones.

'Daddy? Daddy? Get up, please!'

Magnus knocked down a bookcase as he faced his attacker.

'Your magic's strong warlock.' The man taunted, his seraph blade lighting up. 'Much stronger than that horned warlock I killed this morning,'

'Elias?' Magnus' eyes lit up in disbelief and anger.

The shadowhunter attacked and Magnus threw a spell at him that he ducked away from.

'That was his name? Lucky for us, he sold you out before I took his warlock mark.' The shadowhunter swung again and Magnus retaliated.

'Cats eyes?' He remarked upon seeing Magnus' own warlock Mark. 'They'll be a nice addition to my collection.' As he finished speaking an arrow embedded itself into his leg and he cried out in pain.

Magnus threw his magic towards him in anger, effectively knocking him over, unconscious.

'Well done.' The deep voice sounded from behind him.

'More like medium-rare.' He retorted. He turned to face the handsome shadowhunter.

'I'm Magnus, I don't think we've been formally introduced.'

'Alec.' Alec smiled at the warlock.

'We should join the party.' Magnus gestured for Alec to leave the room first.

Adelaide hadn't mentioned that Alec was so attractive, Magnus thought with a smirk.

Magnus surveyed the room with a careful eye. 'This fights far from over.' He sighed as he followed the same path Alec had walked.

'Magnus.'

Magnus turned to Clary, watching as she guided in a young warlock named Zoe whom was wearing an expression of shock and sadness on her face.

The younger girl reached for him and he embraced her tightly.

'Go join the others my dear. This is no place for a little girl. Go.' He ushered her along.

'I heard what you did for Zoe.' Magnus spoke after hearing Clary sigh. 'You risked your life without hesitation to save a young warlock child.'

'She was just a girl in trouble. I had no choice.' Clary spoke carefully.

'You always have a choice. You're not like others, Clary Fairchild. Most shadowhunters protect downworlders out of sense of duty, but you saved young Zoe because of what was inside your heart. You're more like your mother than you'll ever know.' Magnus smiled slightly at the redhead,

'Magnus. Please, you can't hide from this battle. Look, Valentine, he found you once. He will find you again. We need to work together. Help me.' A desperate tone entered Clary's voice.

Magnus sighed in defeat.

'I can summon the demon, but you must make the demand, Now, I warn you, retrieving your memories will not be easy.' He warned.

A new sense of hope entered Clary's eyes. 'I will do what I have to do.'

Magnus nodded. 'Alright, but we're not safe here. The lair's location has been compromised. Hold tight everyone, we're about to move.'

Adelaide knew she was dreaming.

Atleast she assumed as much as she watched a younger version of herself chase after Alec Lightwood, her hand gripped tightly in Isabelle's.

'Alec! Come play with us please!'

Isabelle's voice was childish and even though she couldn't have been more than five years old, her voice was demanding.

Adelaide watched the raven-haired boy as he turned around.

'I don't want to play with you Isabelle. Go away.'

'Come and play Alec, we can pretend to be real shadowhunters!' Adelaide wasn't sure why her subconscious had chosen this memory for her to remember, but as she listened to her younger self speak, she realised just how far back her friendship with Alec went.

'But we aren't real shadowhunters. Not until we're bigger.' Alec pouted out his lips and crossed his arms as he faced the two girls.

'Jace will play if you do Alec. Please come play with us.' Little Adelaide pouted her lips and stared at Alec.

Alec sighed dramatically. 'Fine, Isabelle go and get Jace.' Isabelle squealed as she ran off, yelling out Jace's name as she did.

Adelaide startled Alec as she jumped on him, hugging him tightly.

'Let's hide from them.' Adelaide suggested as she took Alec's hand, the two of them running away together.

A sudden noise woke her from her sleep.

Adelaide yawned, her limbs aching as she moved. It was almost as if she had been asleep for days.

The events that led to her prolonged sleep rushed back, and her sleepy disorientation was replaced with anger. Adelaide marched towards her bedroom door, determined to give Magnus a piece of her mind.

The door was locked.

Adelaide cursed loudly. He'd actually locked her in her.

'Warlocks' She thought bitterly. 'They always have to get their way.'

Magnus had not had a good day.

He'd betrayed his best friends trust, been attacked by circle members, another of his friends had been killed, and Alec Lightwood had nearly gotten him killed in his denial.

Yes, Magnus had not had a very good day at all.

So you can imagine his annoyance when upon entering his best friends bedroom, he was shoved against a wall with a seraph blade against his neck.

'Hello to you too, Adelaide.'

Adelaide pressed the blade down slightly.

'How dare you.'

Magnus rolled his eyes. 'It was for your own safety Adelaide.'

'How was it for my own safety Magnus? How did any of this help!' She yelled.

'Circle members found us.' At her panicked look he clarified 'They're gone now, but still. I locked you in here to keep you safe. I put you to sleep so I could do a business deal.' Magnus shrugged.

Adelaide lowered her blade, stepping back from Magnus. Magnus watched her carefully; her shoulders and mouth were tense, so he safely assumed she was still angry. Hoping to get her mind onto another topic, Magnus spoke again.

'I met someone interesting today. He reminded me of you.' He followed Adelaide as she moved into the living area, raising an eyebrow at the redecorating.

'You always meet someone interesting wherever you go Magnus. Who was it this time?'

'Oh, he wasn't anyone special. Tall, dark and handsome, has this mysterious vibe, rather likes shooting things with a bow. Pretty little sister named Isabelle...' Magnus trailed off.

Adelaide's whole body tensed in shock. His name burst from her lips without her consent.

'Alec.'

Magnus nodded in confirmation as he sat down on the couch, pulling her down beside him.

'What-how...Magnus, I-' Adelaide tripped over her words.

'He's very attractive.'

Adelaide couldn't help it, she laughed. Her laugh sounded strange to her own ears, high pitched and borderline hysterical.

'You never mentioned he plays for both teams.' Magnus shrugged indifferently.

Adelaide sighed; her hands were still trembling slightly. 'It wasn't my secret to tell, Magnus.'

'So you do know. Huh.'

'Of course I know. I was the one who helped him realise it.'

Magnus leaned forward, sensing an interesting story. 'Do tell.'

Adelaide shook her head. 'That's a story for another time. How's – How's Isabelle? And Jace?'

'They seem fine, for the most part. Isabelle does seem to trace her parabatai rune a lot though. Jace, admittedly, was a little preoccupied by a certain Clary Fairchild. Isabelle also seems very attached to her brother, she loves him a great deal.'

'Izzy and Alec have always been close. They both love unconditionally and wholeheartedly. They welcomed both Jace and I into their family without so much as a hesitation. Did you say Fairchild?'

Magnus nodded.

'Oh wow. I didn't expect that. Is Jocelyn...'

'She's missing. We believe Valentine has her.'

'How did I miss so much.' Adelaide mumbled to herself.

'They miss you, you know.' Magnus stood up as he made his way towards his own bedroom, exhausted from the day.

'And how do you know that?' Adelaide asked, sarcasm colouring her tone.

'Each of them had to relinquish the happiest memory of the person they loved the most to a memory demon.'

Adelaide waited.

'You were their memories, Adelaide.'
