Chapter 2: The Cliff

Chan left the café and headed back to his house. He took the long way home, past the cliffs. He stopped when he saw a figure sitting in the tree that overlooked the cliff. Curious, he walked closer. He was surprised to find the girl from the coffee shop sitting in the tree. He went to ask her what she was doing, but he stopped when she started to sing. She sang about voices and breaking free from things in the past. She sang about moving forward and making a name for yourself. Blazing your own path to success.

Chan had no idea why the lyrics had such an impact on him. He had never really considered making music a career, but the girl's lyrics inspired him. She made him realize that when he was alone at night, the only thing that filled the emptiness was music. Music wasn't just words or sounds. Music was emotion and power.

The girl looked down from her perch to see the guy from the café staring into the horizon. Her head immediately filled with thoughts of worry and embarrassment. Had he heard her singing? She started climbing down the tree. When she reached the ground, the guy broke out of whatever thoughts were entangling him.

"Hi." He said simply. The girl slowly looked up to meet his eyes.

"Hi?" She replied. The guy smiled and revealed dimples. The girl somehow found herself smiling back. There was something about his smile that immediately made her want to trust him. He looked so open and nice. But people aren't always what they seem.

"My name is Chan by the way." He said.

"Astra." The girl answered cautiously.

"Can I ask you a question, Astra?" Chan asked the girl. She nodded, still unsure of where this was going. "What are you doing up at this hour?" He asked. She went to say that it was her job, but that wasn't really the whole story.

"I... I have insomnia. I can't sleep at night and I hate it. I've hated it for years, until I started working at that coffee shop. I work the shifts that nobody really wants and it makes me feel useful." She said nonchalantly, still a little suspicious. Chan smiled again, melting the last of her suspicions away like a shadow in sunshine.

"Well then, we have something in common, insomnia buddy." He joked. The girl smiled. An alarm shattered the moment and made the girl jump slightly. She brought her phone out and turned off the alarm.

"Sorry about that. I have to get going now. Maybe I'll see you again?" She asked hopefully. Chan nodded.

"Goodbye, Insomnia Buddy." Chan called after her. She laughed.

"Insomnia can go step in front of a train, thank you." Astra joked.

"Amen to that." Chan answered. Astra smiled.

"Goodbye, Chan." She said before walking away. Chan couldn't wipe the smile off of his face for some reason, but he wasn't complaining. It had been a while since he had someone to talk to that understood him.
