Chapter 5

A couple of days later, I went to the boy's gym, but when I entered I saw only one girl. She wore glasses and a black jacket.

"Hello," she said. "You must be y/n, who's here for her project. I am Kiyoko Shimizu, manager of Karasuno. The boys are changing, they'll come in a couple of minutes."

"Nice to meet you, Shimizu," I said politely.

"You too. Do you know any first or second years who might be interested in being the future manager? This is my third year and I want to leave the club in good hands."

"I don't, sorry. And this is also my third year, so it couldn't be me. However, I could help you put some flyers or something like that around the school to find those who might be interested."

"That's a great idea, thank you for offering! I'll print out some and I'll give you half of them, so you can put them on the boards."

"Sounds goo-"

I couldn't finish over the shouting of two boys running at us.

"We are so lucky to have you here, Kiyoko!" said the bald one.

"You too, y/n. Blessed by the lord," said his short friend.

"Y/n, meet Tanaka and Nisinoya," said Shimizu. "And please stop shouting, boys."

"Whatever you say!" they said at the same time and ran to warm up.

"They can be intense, but once you get to know them, they're nice. Same goes for Hinata and Kageyama," said Shimizu, smiling.

"Noted."

"Welcome back, y/n!" said Sugawara.

"Thank you, good to see you too," I answered. He came to say hi. That made me very happy for some reason. I guess I was just happy that I was already making friends. "Are you training today? Let's see if you're as good as you told me."

Did I just challenge him? A person I don't even know that much yet? Oh, my God, what was I thinking?

Sugawara just laughed, making my worries go away once more. His laugh was soothing.

Wait-

"So, did you decide on your theme?" he asked, interrupting my thoughts.

"I did. I want to tell a story of improvement and hard work, showing the volleyball aesthetic in the way, which is beautiful."

"Wow, that's great," said the boy of the endless smile. Was he... impressed? "You should definitely write that in the description."

I was about to answer, when the door opened and an adult entered.

"Hello, coach Ukai," said Sugawara.

"Hello, guys." Then he turned to me. "Are you the photographer?"

"Please don't say it like that, it makes it sound official," I said. "Thank you for the opportunity."

"Sure. If everything goes well with this contest the school will be more popular. The vice principal will be happy and he might let us do more things."

I asked him if he could let me explain the project to the boys and he called them all. They were kind of intimidating.

"Hi. I'm y/n. Some of you have seen me around in the last couple of days. There is a very important photography contest in our school and I wanted my project to be about volleyball. That's why I asked your team and the girls for permission. Thank you for this, I won't bother much. I'll help clean up and things you need."

"Won't this distract us?" asked a black haired boy. Kageyama, if I remembered correctly.

"It won't, I know how to do it. I won't say I'll be invisible and I might ask you to collaborate with me, but I will do that as little as I can."

"I don't want to be in any picture," said a blond with glasses.

"Of course. Anyone else?" I said.

Nobody objected.

"Why not, Tsukishima?" said Hinata, shocked. "This is amazing! I can't wait, I'm so excited!"

Tsukishima just rolled his eyes. Coach Ukai told them to finish warming up.

I didn't need much preparation. I took out my camera and made sure it worked well. There was a freckled boy near me and I decided it was best to ask the players for their permission.

"Hello," I said. "Can I ask your name?"

"Yamaguchi," he looked a bit nervous. I wondered if I'd done the right thing.

"Can I take a picture of you?" I sounded like a creep. "Sorry, that came out wrong."

"I get what you mean, but, uh, I'd rather you didn't right now?" he said shyly. "I just need to get used to you being around."

"Of course, I understand. I don't mean to make anyone uncomfortable, so don't hesitate in saying so. Nice to meet you, Yamaguchi."

"Nice to meet you too," he beamed, a bit more relaxed.

I moved around taking a couple of pictures from time to time. I used that time to learn their names. Hinata was the one with the orange hair. He was very enthusiastic and was thrilled about my project. Sugawara was the cute setter. Kageyama was the other setter. Tsukishima was the only one with glasses (apart from Shimizu). He didn't seem to like me for some reason, which was a bit unfair, since there had been no time to properly meet them. Yamaguchi seemed to be his close friend. I thought that was a curious friendship. Daichi was the captain. Asahi was the ace. It was true that he seemed intimidating at first, but he was very nice. Tanaka liked to show off, but he was friendly too. And Nishinoya was quite similar to Hinata.

There were other second year players, but I hadn't met them and at the moment I had enough with those.

I didn't understand why there were two setters, though. From what I'd seen, both were good players. And while Kageyama's accuracy was scary, it was clear that Sugawara had been playing longer by the way he worked with the rest of the team.

I took some more photos and took a break to examine them. They were terrible. That discouraged me a little. I thought I was doing just fine, but it was definitely not my day. I decided to sit down and watch them to get more ideas until training was over.

Hinata's jump was really impressive. I needed that picture. I also wanted one with Sugawara about to set the ball. I wanted to photograph Kageyama serving and Nisinoya receiving the ball. He was clearly the libero.

They had more technique than the girls, but they also had a lot to improve. The female team could go far.

"Are you free to come here tomorrow too? I can print the flyers this afternoon and we could go tomorrow after practice," said Shimizu.

"I have to see the girls first, but I'll pass by before practice is over," I replied.

She grinned and made a little peace sign.

"We're done for today!" said Daichi.

We all cleaned up and they got changed again. Hinata walked up to me.

"Did you see my jump? Are you going to photograph it? Your project seems cool. Do you play volleyball too?" he said all of this very fast, but I was also a fast talker and understood him.

"Yes, I do. Normally I play as setter, but I can't compare myself to your setter, Kageyama."

"And my jump? Did you see me spike?" he said excitedly. This boy needed to calm down.

"Stop bragging and shut up, stupid!" yelled Kageyama.

"Y/n," said Tanaka. "You need to come more often."

"When Kiyoko is with other girls, she talks and smiles more" added Nishinoya.

"Ookay?" I was feeling too much attention.

"Leave her alone! You're going to scare her off!" It was Sugawara.

They said goodbye after getting a smack and got out.

"Sorry about them. I know they can be intense," said Sugawara, changing his mood completely.

"Shimizu had warned me, don't worry. Thanks for that, though." It was very nice to talk to him.

"Anytime."

"Suga! Come on! Y/n will have stuff to do" said Daichi.

I wanted to say that it was fine and that I had nothing to do, but he was faster.

"Right. And I should go too. See you!"

"Bye!"

I picked up my bag and went home. Today had been okay. My pictures had been terrible, but I knew most of the team now. And I'd talked to Sugawara again. I had to ask him about the double setter thing next time.

I wondered what I was going to have for dinner.

How is it going? We've met most of the team now. And y/n and Suga are getting closer. Vote and coment :D
