Chapter 3
Photography club ended sooner than I'd liked and I was about to head out when someone spoke.
"Are you really that determined to do this when you have absolutely no chance of winning?"
The girl who had spoken was another third year like me who I only saw here. I didn't know why, but she liked to bother people. I'd never talked to her much. Just enough to know I didn't like her. Her name was Yamada.
"You really think something coming from you is going to discourage me?" I said in a tone that implied boredom. Nevertheless, I was actually very mad.
"I'm not disingc- deasnc- I'm not doing that. I'm just explaining the situation. You have no chance of winning. At all. The prize will be mine."
"You seem very confident. We'll see who has the last laugh," I said as calmly as I could and dragged Kaneko out of there.
"How can you be so calm wh-?" She started asking, but I cut her off.
"Is she kidding me?" I was practically shouting. "She doesn't even know how to pronounce discourage and has the nerve to look down on me?"
"That was embarrassing, but listen -"
"And why does she talk like that? She's not in a freaking American high school drama!"
"I know, it makes me mad as-"
"And she even has the audacity to brag about how she's going to win? Please!"
"Are you done now?" Asked Kaneko
"Yes," I said, still mad, though.
"Okay. It's good to let it out."
"Thanks for listening to all of that," I was kinda embarrassed.
"Don't worry. I don't like her either. How did you manage to keep your cool in there? I would've lost it."
"I guess I'm good at acting," I laughed.
I knew that wasn't exactly the reason, but I was not going to think about it.
"Should we get something to eat?" I proposed.
"I'd love to, but I have to study."
"Why? We don't have exams yet."
"I know, but I didn't pay attention in maths today and I have to do the homework."
"Okay, we'll eat tomorrow."
"Sure thing."
I decided to go to see the girls. I walked to the gym muttering a song and opened the door.
"Nice receive, Noya!"
Oh, God. I was in the boys's gym.
Very embarrassed, I started to go away hoping no one would see me when:
"Y/n! Good thing you're here now" it was Daichi.
"What do you mean?" I didn't understand.
"Do you have a couple of minutes? Please play along," he whispered.
He turned to the team, especially Hinata.
"Listen up! Y/n is here to practice photography. She'll take a couple of shots to practice for her very important contest."
Hinata froze for a second and then smiled with sparks in his eyes. A bald guy and his short friend also seemed excited. I would've been nervous about something like that, but I guess Daichi knew his teammates.
"I'm sorry, they've been playing badly this past couple of days, I just needed a motivation," Daichi explained.
"Well played, captain."
I sat on the bench and took out my camera. I could use the practice, anyway.
"Hi," said the cute silver haired boy from the other day. "I didn't introduce myself the last day and looking back on it, that was rude."
"Oh, don't worry about it. I bet you were tired."
"Not an excuse. My name is Sugawara Koshi. Or Suga for short."
"I'm y/n. Nice to meet you, Sugawara."
"Nice to meet you too, y/n. So, you're the new Karasuno photographer, huh?" He joked.
"Nah. There's this really big contest I need to win and I'm looking for ideas. Is it okay if I take some pictures? My project might be volleyball related."
"No problem. Do you like volleyball?"
"I do! I'm not nearly as good as you guys, but it's so fun to play."
"Oh, are you the one that sometimes stays with the female team?"
"Yeah, have you seen me before?" I asked.
"Not really. I just heard they got a new manager."
"No, they didn't. I just help from time to time, I'm not manager."
I cleaned the lenses of the camera and scanned the place.
"I'm sure you do more than that. Which is your position?" he asked.
"Normally I play as setter."
"Really? I'm a setter too!" he smiled.
"That's so cool! Maybe we should play some time."
As soon as I said that, I regretted it. Did I just ask a great player to play with me 'some other time'?
"Sure," he smiled again, which made my worries go away.
I took a couple of shots and I was pleased with the result. I could work with this light. I played with the angles, the lighting, the position of the players...
After a while, I sat back at the bench with Suga and looked at the photos.
"How'd it go?" He asked.
"Good, I like this place."
"Me too. Ooh, those are cool!" He looked at the photos.
"Thanks, but they're just tests. To make the real ones I need to think a bit more. I can't just present some random pictures. There has to be a reason behind them, you have to tell a story."
I explained him about what I'd thought (which wasn't much and it was all very abstract) and I told him a couple of things about photography and how I used it in volleyball for a better vision of the space around me.
Sugawara listened to every word, interested. He asked when he was curious, he made a couple of jokes and we both laughed... It was great. I loved sharing my passion and I could see he didn't feel forced to fake interest.
Not that I didn't have any friends, of course, but it was nice to connect with somebody. When the conversation flows easily and it's so interesting that you simply lose track of time.
"Well done today, guys. Time to clean up," said Daichi. "Hinata and Kageyama! Go home, okay?"
Suga and I looked at the clock. It was over already?
"I am so sorry!" I said. "I distracted you from practice!"
"Don't worry, Kageyama is covering for me today."
We helped clean the floor and I realized I didn't know half of the team.
"Do you guys have a manager?" I asked Suga.
"Yes. Kiyoko Shimizu. She's been sick, but I think tomorrow she'll be fine." He pointed to the boy with the long hair. "That's Asahi. He might seem intimidating, but he's actually very nice. We four are the third years of Karasuno. Well, five with you."
"Okay, thanks. I'll ask you to introduce the rest another day. I can't remember those many faces at once."
"Okay."
"Thanks for this, y/n," said Daichi.
"No worries. It was actually a good opportunity for some testing, so thanks. Can I ask you something? Is it okay if I come here some other time? It would be great to do the project with the boys and the girls."
"Of course. And after helping out today, how can you not?"
"See you another day, then," I said.
They said bye and I went home waking fast for two reasons: I was happy and I was late for dinner.
First conversation with Suga! Hope you're enjoying this story. Please vote and comment.
