Chapter 18

Ah, photography club again. Boy, did I love it. Today we were learning about how to take pictures at night or when it was dark. I couldn't help but think about last weekend, where I'd been in a beautiful place without my camera.

The afternoon Suga and I had arrived, I'd asked him to leave me at Kaneko's place. I had kissed him good bye and entered my friend's house. Her parents had said hi and asked about my parents. Then Kaneko had taken me to her room.

I was so lucky to have her. I told her about our little adventure. I didn't even know how eager I was to tell somebody. We also called Ishida, but didn't let him fanboy too much. Then she and I stayed awake for a while.

The first day of the week was always hard, but right now I was very happy.

"I gotta say," said Kaneko by my side," those nails of yours sure look good."

"Of course, you painted them yourself." I snorted.

"I did, didn't I?" she said, full of pride.

"Just shut up already. If you have these skills, why even bother studying medicine?" I joked.

"Because, my dear friend," she replied in a mock philosophical tone," contributing to the scientific community is my dream."

I knew she was completely serious about that, but I couldn't stop laughing. Soon, she was laughing with me.

"Girls, what's going on?" the teacher said. She was very nice, but she hated interruptions. "I'll allow it this time, because you're both always well behaved. Come on, we have ten minutes left."

"Thank you, miss" said Kaneko.

"Sorry, miss," I apologized.

I could've sworn I saw Yamada giggle. Oh, I hated her so much. Not only we just got embarrassed in front of everyone, but she had to go and laugh.

When the teacher gave us permission to walk around to write some ideas, I took a glance at Yamada's photos for the contest. They were a beautiful collection of flowers and trees.

Bah, I thought. Nature, such a cliché topic.

I nudged Kaneko and subtly pointed at the pictures with my chin. She was clearly impressed by them, but she rolled her eyes and took me by the arm.

"She probably didn't even make those herself," she said.

"I don't know," I said. "I couldn't care less about her, I'm not wasting my precious time looking at her work."

"Good point," Kaneko said, thoughtfully. "Whatever, let's just forget about her."

I thought that was a very good idea and took out my camera to take some photos after being apart for so long.

"It was just a weekend," said my friend, as if she could read my mind. Sometimes I thought she could do it, there were too many coincidences.

I stuck out my tongue at her and, when she returned the gesture, I took a picture. Except that the photo wasn't saved. Perhaps the memory card was full.

I went to take it out to replace it, but there was nothing to take out, because the memory card was missing!

"What's wrong?" asked Kaneko.

"I must have left my memory card at home," I answered.

"Don't you have another?"

"Of course I do, but I can't just go losing them around, can I?"

I took out a spare one and forgot about it. Club was over and I headed home instantly. Despite what I'd told Kaneko, I wasn't relaxed. It was very weird that I didn't have everything related to my photography tools under control.

As soon as I got home, I began searching for it. I looked everywhere : inside closets, drawers, bags, under pillows, under the bed, on tables... The card was nowhere to be found.

"Damn it!" I shouted, out of pure rage. I just could not believe it. Everything I'd done, the results of months of hard work... It was all gone. That was my one chance to make my dream come true, to show my parents what made me happy. And I'd messed it up.

I muffled my screaming with a pillow until my throat was sore and started crying. I was dimly aware that it wasn't a rational reaction, but I couldn't care less at the moment. I just needed to let it out.

My phone rang and, although I wasn't really in the mood for talking to anyone, I figured I should at least try.

"Hey, y/n!" I was surprised to hear my boyfriend's voice.

"Hey," I said, as casual as possible and trying not to show my shaky voice.

"I hope this isn't a bad time, but I was studying and there's something I need your help with," he said.

"Hold up, are you asking me about something school related?" I tried for a joke, but I was just not feeling it.

"Of course, you're smarter than you give yourself credit for."

Yeah, right, I thought, angrily. If I was smart I wouldn't have lost the card.

"Nah, you're just too kind." My voice cracked.

"Wait, have you been crying?" he asked, sudden concern in his voice.

Of course he'd notice. Now that I had nothing to hide, I broke down and told him everything between sobs. It was pathetic.

"Hey, hey, don't beat yourself up," he said, calmly. "It was an accident."

"Well, yeah, but no one will care! No project, no contest. Simple as that!" I said, exasperated. Bless his good patience. "And now what am I supposed to do? This was my last chance! There's no next year for me!"

"Breathe, Sugar," he said.

"Sugar?" I giggled, forgetting momentarily about the card. "What kind of cheesy nickname is that?"

"Oh, please, you know you love it," he said.

I chuckled, then remembered my problem. "The thing is, I don't know how it happened! I always know where my stuff is! And when it's not with me I keep it at home or at the club!"

"You can keep it at the club?" he asked.

"Ye- OH MY GOD!" I said, sudden realization hit me like a truck.

"What is it? Y/n, breathe, please."

"Oh my God, I know what happened! Of course! It was that little bi-"

"What are you talking about?" Suga interrupted my ranting.

"Last day, before we went camping, I left it at the club and this girl offered to help the teacher clean up. She must have stolen it then!"

"That makes sense," he said. "What's this girl's name?"

"Yamada."

"Oh, I've seen her. She's in my biology class, but we've never talked. Hey, do you think I can hide a dead frog under her desk or something?"

"Oh, please do," I laughed.

"Koshi!" I heard distantly, on Suga's side.

"I'm sorry, Sugar, I have to go," he said. "We'll fix this, okay? See you later!"

"Bye." I hung up.

What should I do? There's no way she'll give it back and no one's going to believe me. But I didn't have time nor strength to do it all again. I decided to text Kenma, even though I didn't think he'd be able to help me.

You: hi, Kenma! How have u been?

You: I wanted to ask you something. Is it possible to retrieve the photos of a memory card you've lost?

Kenma: hi

Kenma: if u don't have a copy, no

Me: okay thx. Thought I'd try anyway

Kenma: sry

Me: pls don't apologize, it's my stupid brain

Kenma: ur brain isn't stupid. u know what is? Being stuck on the same level for 3 days T^T

Me: damn. I wish I could help u but u still owe me some video game classes

Kenma: sure. Imma go play now ttyl bye

You: cya

I decided to call Kaneko, knowing she was going to scold me for being so careless. I could hear her saying I told you so.

I called her twice but she wasn't picking up.

I figured I should start studying. Photography had never been an option.

I opened my text book.

Sorry for leaving this like that... Actually I'm not hahahah >:))
