Chapter 17

The first thing I realized when I woke up: I was not at home. I was surrounded by trees and birds singing. The quiet forest in peace, exactly like a Disney movie.

The second thing I noticed: I was not alone. Sugawara was right next to me. In fact, we'd woken up all tangled. Suddenly, he stirred and heat rose to my cheeks.

"Good morning, y/n," he said, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes.

"Morning," I said, still half asleep. "How did we end up like this?"

"I- I don't know," he said thoughtfully, then laughed. "What happened?"

His laughter was contagious. "I don't even know." We were laughing more out of embarrassment than anything. But I regretted nothing and I was sure neither did he. Suga hugged me tightly.

"What's that all about, huh?" I asked, lovingly. I hated that cloying voice of mine, but it came naturally in endearing scenes or moments.

"Stop asking that," he said. "I don't need an excuse for treating my amazing girlfriend the way she deserves."

I kissed him on the forehead. I swear that boy would be the death of me, my heart could probably not take it.

"What time is it?" I picked a fallen leaf and observed it. I wished I had my camera with me right now.

"Not sure, but it's probably late. We sure were exhausted," he said.

I was too lazy to look at the time and I didn't care that much either, so I just got up and began to gather the blankets and everything to put them back in the trunk of the car. Meanwhile, Suga made breakfast.

The sun was shining, despite some small clouds. I was certain we were going to have good weather.

"What are we having, chef Sugawara?" I asked.

"There's toast with oil and ham and the coffee you brought. We also have fruit, if you'd like," he answered.

"I'll pass on the fruit, thank you," I said, taking a toast.

It wasn't exactly a toast, because we didn't have anything to cook with or some kind of fire, but the bread was still good.

"Do you want some coffee?" I offered.

"No, thanks." He took a bite out of his toast. "I hate cold coffee."

I didn't have anything against cold coffee, so I drank a bit. "It's really good, you should try it."

He pretended to think. "Mmh, no thank you."

I shook my head muttering these kids today, can't even stand cold coffee. This didn't happen when I was young. Suga wasn't expecting that and almost choked laughing.

"I'm okay, I'm okay, don't worry," he assured me. "You've been talking too much with Kuroo."

It was my time to snicker. "He also liked my photos," I said out of the blue.

"Obviously, because they're good. Why didn't you bring your camera with you?"

"I left it at school and I'm regretting it."

"With your skills, can you take good ones with your phone?" I loved his genuine curiosity.

"Yeah, I guess. But you can't compare it."

"Still, give it a shot. I'd love to see it."

I grabbed the leaf from before and put it against one of the trees. The beautiful leaf with its unique shape and the contrast of the texture of the bark made a good combination. I took out my phone and click.

"Let me see," said Suga, and I handed him the phone. "I think it's good, but it's true that after seeing the ones you printed, this is nothing."

"See?" I said. "It doesn't matter right now. Let's take a selfie!"

I put one hand around him and took a picture of us smiling. Then one sticking out our tongues. Then one winking. Then one making little peace signs. Then one kissing.

"So" I said, once I put my phone away, "what's the plan for today?"

Suga just grinned. "Oh, there's plenty to do."

We had the best day. We first walked for a while admiring the wonderful nature, we climbed a couple of big rocks just because we could. Then, run through the trees and practically played hide and seek. Then, we stopped for lunch, which consisted of sandwiches. I hadn't been to the forest in ages and it felt so good to be back.

After lunch, Suga fell asleep for a little while and I took out a small notebook and a pencil. I couldn't believe my luck when I saw daisies, my favourite flower, and I had to (at least try) to draw them. After all the training with the camera I wasn't bad at drawing, but I was no professional and I needed a desk.

"What are you doing?" Suga asked when he woke up, and looked over my shoulder. "Those look pretty."

"Thanks! It's my favourite flower, so I had to give it a shot."

Later, we searched for mushrooms and blackberries. While he told me which mushrooms were good and which were poisonous, I explained everything there was to know about blackberry picking. We also tried to see some animals, but, unfortunately, we had no such luck.

"Y/n," Suga called. "I'm so sorry, but my dad just texted me saying I need to be home sooner, so we'll have to leave today."

"It's okay, I understand. Is there something wrong?" I said. I was expecting to have more time, which only made the one we had even more valuable.

"My dad didn't specify so it's probably nothing serious. It's not that late yet, so let's do something," he said, trying to sound upbeat. "How about we go to the lake? It's beautiful and I'm sure there are less people now."

"Sounds good to me!" I grabbed his hand and walked with him to the car. I could practically hear his thoughts racing. "You know you're not ruining anything, right? Even if we have less time today than we thought. It doesn't matter, because we'll get other chances. What matters is right now."

"Thanks," he smiled sincerely. Ah, that smile that drove me crazy.

We got in the car and he took us to the lake. Boy, I wished I could drive. But I needed to study for that. And I needed to focus on school or photography was over for me. Although... now I had Suga and he could help me study...

We arrived at the lake, which was, surprisingly, not crowded. There were people, but way less than I expected. Perhaps it was because of the wind.

We walked for a bit. We didn't talk much, we didn't have to. Instead, we enjoyed each other's company in a comfortable silence. Holding his hand was enough.

I saw a little boy walking alone near the shore. He must have been about five or six, though I'd never been good at guessing ages.

"Do you think he's all right?" I asked Suga.

"I'm not sure," he replied, and went over to him.

"Hi," he said. "This lake is lovely, isn't it?"

At first, the kid scurried away from him, but Suga didn't give up. Gently, he crouched, spoke in a soft tone and generally moved slowly.

"What's your name?" he kept trying.

"Yuto," the boy said very quietly.

"Oh, that's such a cool name!" he smiled. "Mine is Sugawara. And this lady over here is y/n."

"She's pretty," the little boy said.

"I'm sorry, buddy, she's taken."

Yuto giggled and I said hi. It seemed like Yuto was warming up to us. That was fast, I thought.

I liked kids. I mean, I absolutely hated when they yelled and some of them could be rude and annoying. However, kids were also so full of life and dreams. They lit up every room they were in with their laugh. And the way they learn new things everyday because there are just so many things to do!

However, I'd probably make a bad babysitter. As much as I loved kids, I was too impatient and I struggled to find things to do or to talk to them in the right way. I guess I needed some more practice.

From what I was seeing, Suga also liked children. I knew he was sweet, of course, but this was a whole lot different. I was aware that he was acting strong for him, but that glint in his eyes... That was no show at all.

Yuto explained that he hadn't hurt himself, he was just lost and he didn't know where his parents were. Suga kept calm and soothed the boy, then did his best to distract him. I joined their conversation, while looking around for some kind of sign of his parents at the same time.

"Do you like sports?" Suga said.

"Oh yeah!" Yuto said, excitedly. "Basketball is the best!"

I snickered and Suga just shook his head. "I play volleyball, but basketball is fun too."

"Volleyball? Never played," Yuto said, thoughtfully. "Have you played, y/n?

"I have," I said, then looked at my boyfriend to see his reaction. "I agree with you that basketball is better, Yuto."

"I see how it is," Suga clicked his tongue. "I can't win against two, but I know I'm right."

Yuto laughed and I gave him a high five. All of a sudden, he got up and ran to a teary eyed woman we hadn't seen coming.

"Mommy!" Yuto hugged his mother.

The woman wiped off her tears quickly, so his son wouldn't worry or get scared. "I'm here, I'm here."

Then, she finally seemed to notice the other two people standing there and stared at us. Me, being the smart person I was, figured we should say something.

"Hi," I started. "I'm y/n and this is Sugawara."

"They came to talk about basketball and volleyball!" Yuto said happily.

"Uuh, what he means is that we saw your son there all alone and thought we might help him because we thought he was hurt," Suga completed.

"Thank you so much, both of you," the woman whispered, so only we could hear. "I lost sight of him for a minute and I was so scared."

"It's okay, it's over now," I offered my best smile.

"We are happy to help," said Suga.

"You're leaving?" said Yuto.

"We have to go, buddy. But, hey, keep playing basket and why not give volleyball a chance?" he winked.

"Sure! Bye, new friends!" Yuto and his mom left.

We did have to go, that wasn't a lie, it was getting late. We got inside the car again.

"You sure are good with kids," Suga commented.

"What? Me?" I was genuinely surprised. "But it was you who did all the work."

"Believe me, I did not," he assured. "I could see how much you wanted to hold him and tell him that everything would be okay. But you held back because you're a stranger to him. Your presence calmed him a lot, I could tell."

"You're not that bad yourself," I said. "You'd make a great dad."

"Oh, thank you. I do want to have kids when I grow up," he confessed. "Do you?"

"Yeah, it would be nice. Imagine a little y/n running around. Or a tiny Sugawara."

We laughed at the thought, then sang a couple of songs. Night fell and I dared to wonder how things could be if Suga and I continued to be together. Would we have kids? The thought alone made my heart race. What would we do for a living? I hoped photography was the answer for me. How would our house be? I imagined all those things and more.

Before I knew it I was out like a light.
