Chapter 14

"Which one of these two photos should I keep?" I asked Kaneko showing her the camera.

"Mmh... This one."

We were at photography club. The teacher had let us use the hour for our projects. The ones who didn't participate were doing something else with her.

Kaneko was helping me select the good pictures. I hadn't finished completely, I still needed at least one session with the female team, but I didn't love doing the selection and Kaneko enjoyed it, so she helped me out.

"That's a good one, but it's a bit blurry. Do you have a similar one?" she said.

"I think so, let me... This one?"

"I'd include that one."

So I did. I completely trusted Kaneko's intuition.

We'd selected a story. The individual ones with the things they did best, such as Kageyama's sets or Yui's serves to represent talent. The warm ups, cleaning up, water breaks... to represent perseverance and practice. Then general photos of the teams training that represented teamwork and effort. The match against Nekoma: the competition, the final trial. Finally, celebrating the victory. And, of course, shaking hands with the rival, which represented sportsmanship.

I also had the pictures of them losing, but I decided I wasn't going to include that.

"You're not still trying to win, are you?" said a familiar unpleasant voice. Yamada.

"You bet I am," I gritted my teeth.

Kaneko shot me a warning look that was telling me to calm down.

"I don't even know why you bother," she continued.

But she was making it very difficult to calm down.

"And I don't even know why you talk to me," I muttered loud enough.

"Wait, are those the pics? Good luck, then," she laughed.

"Okay, I had enough." I stood up to punch her in the face, forgetting about the consequences, but Kaneko stopped me on time.

"We are not interested in your opinion. Goodbye." Her tone was not kind, it was controlled, as if she were restraining herself, which she probably was.

Yamada shrugged and left with a smile I didn't trust. I wish I'd punched her, but I was grateful for Kaneko's serenity.

"Five minutes left, guys!" said the teacher: our cue to go.

"I can print some of the photos if you'd like," Kaneko offered.

"That would be great! Thank you!"

That way I could examine the quality and show the teams. Also, it was exciting to see my own pictures printed.

"But I'm going to need the camera..." she said.

"No, you only need the pictures," I said. "Here's the memory card."

"How will you take pictures without the memory, though?"

"I always have a spare card, I'm not an animal."

Kaneko just shook her head and took the card. I could've sworn I heard her say you're hopeless, but I let it slide.

"You should make a copy," she commented.

"Nah, I trust you."

"It's not a matter of trust. You could lose it or something."

"There is no way I'd lose something like that. Don't worry!"

I said goodbye and headed to the girl's gym. However, a surprise awaited me.

"Y/nnnn!" said Hinata.

Please tell me I didn't enter the wrong gym again.

"Y/n, we were waiting for you," said Yui.

"Explain," I demanded.

"I managed to get both teams to practice together!" she said excitedly. "Shimizu helped."

"Hey," Shimizu waved.

"This is great! Wished I'd participated too, though," I said.

Someone hugged me from behind. "If you had, it wouldn't have been a surprise." Suga's voice made me smile and blush.

"What are you doing?" I said. Why in front of everyone? But he just shrugged.

"You better play well today," I said.

"And you better take some good photos," he replied before joining the others and started yelling things. "Come on, you better train hard today and learn all you can! Tanaka, calm down and leave these girls alone! Hinata, relax! And Tsukishima, at least fake some interest!"

"Do you think that's gonna work?" said Asahi.

"It better."

I laughed. Suga could change from being the sweetest person in the world to your worst nightmare in a matter of seconds.

As soon as he left, I got a lot of looks from the girls, especially Yui. The secret was out. I was sure everyone knew, even though we hadn't exactly made an announcement. That was fine by me, though, because announcements made me nervous. And what is there to announce anyway? Who cares about that?

Of course, my friends were very interested.

"When was this?" Yui asked.

"Uh, a couple of days ago," I said.

"Good for you. Now the team will tease you endlessly, though."

I snorted. "They've already done that."

The teams talked about their strategies, strong traits, things that needed to improve... They helped each other by teaching new techniques or making interesting observations, while I took some pictures.

I used the ones where they were helping each other like Yui and Yamaguchi working on the serve or Nishinoya comparing notes with Watabe. Nevertheless, I focused mainly on the female team.

It was complete chaos and we were having so much fun. I understood we couldn't do this on a regular basis, but we should definitely do it more often. Besides, I believed this was useful for both teams.

When it was over, I realized I'd taken very few photographs, but it was okay because I had the other ones. The other ones that were being printed! I couldn't wait to have them.

After cleaning up, it was time to go home. I was about to leave the school gates when I got a text. It must be Kaneko telling me about the pictures!

Suga: hey! Wanna do something?

I looked around me and found Sugawara smiling at me.

"Of course."

I took him by the hand and he led the way. I didn't know where we were going and I didn't ask him either. Nor did I have a plan anyway. Wherever he'd take me we'd be fine and, meanwhile, we'd enjoy a nice walk.

We passed restaurants, houses and shops, enjoying the warm weather. Then, he stopped and entered one of the shops. "Are you hungry? I had an idea," Suga said with a mischievous smile.

He bought a couple of things while I got a bottle of water (I'd forgotten mine). We went out of the shop to the park where we'd gone on our first date and we sat on the same spot.

"So," Suga took out a tiny bottle of hot sauce. "Let's see what you're made of."

I raised an eyebrow. "Are you challenging me?"

"You bet. Do you accept the challenge?"

"Of course. Prepare to lose."

He made a face that said we'll see about that and prepared two buns with the sauce.

"At the same time."

"One, two, three."

We ate it. This was level 1, so it was hot but bearable. Good thing I'd bought the water.

"Next level." I was going to grab the sauce when he said:

"I propose something: an all or nothing."

"Mmmh. Okay." I put way more sauce than it was necessary for level 2. All or nothing.

We counted to three and ate. This time I felt like a dragon about to breathe fire and my eyes got watery. The bottle of water was close. I could reach it.

I looked at Suga. He seemed to be doing fine. Sure, he'd eaten the same spicy food as I had and it burned, but he looked like he was doing better. I wasn't losing, I had to forget about water.

"Having a hard time?" he smirked. "You know that water is available."

"No," I said. "Besides, the best thing for spicy food is milk. Where's Kageyama when you need him?"

At last, I couldn't take it anymore and drank half the bottle. Then I ate another meat bun with no hot sauce.

"Told you I would win," Suga was enjoying this way too much. "I'm immune to spicy food."

"I thought I tolerated it more," I said, thoughtfully. "Anyway, I'll get you for this. Not now, though. I'm tired."

He just laughed. "I'll be waiting."

We sat looking at the sunset. Once more. And I laid against him. Again. I hadn't really noticed how tired I was. If only I could just close my eyes...

"I wish we could stay here like this," I said. "I wish we could just fall asleep right now."

"Me too." He kissed the top of my head. "Me too."

We stayed there in a comfortable silence just enjoying each other's company when he spoke again.

"Actually, are you free this weekend?"

"No, I'm expensive," I joked and he snorted. "Okay, kidding. Yeah, I'm available."

"Good. Because I had an idea. How about we go camping for one night?" he said.

"Whoa. That's an awesome idea! I'd love to!" I said, excitedly. "On one condition: no tents."

"Okay."

I loved camping, but I loved sleeping under the stars even more. And, anyway, tents were hard to put up. I couldn't believe it, we were seriously going to go.

"I am so happy right now," I looked up at him.

Suga kissed my lips. "We could do this very thing every single day and I'd enjoy every second."
