Chapter 10

"You guys are experts with the sync attack!" I praised the female team. "I want to photograph that."

I got their permission and they got into position. When I gave the signal, they started running. It was a tricky shot, because I needed to pay attention to several things at a time.

So, of course, I didn't get it right.

"Can you do it again?" I asked.

Same result. I was starting to get impatient. "Please, one more time."

Okay, I got this. This time, I saw them like in slow motion. I discovered, with pleasure, how easy it was to work like that. Fully concentrated. But it wasn't that simple for me to be that concentrated, so I decided to seize the opportunity.

I did more or less the same type of photos I'd done with the other team. But it wasn't exactly the same, because I used the things they did best while helping them with little mistakes along the way.

Today I focused more on sportsmanship, enjoying the sport and teamwork. I wanted to represent the team's dynamic.

Practice really flew by. "This was great," I said. "A couple of more sessions and I'll be done!"

"A couple of more sessions?" asked Sasaki. "Didn't you take like a dozen pics today?"

"You would miss me if I finished too soon, wouldn't you?" I joked.

"You know you can come whenever you want," said Aoki.

"Thanks," I said. I was lucky to have them.

It was time for stretching, picking up balls, cleaning the floor and the usual boring stuff we had to do after training. "Bye!" they said, as they left the gym.

"You ready, y/n?" Yui asked.

"Yes," I said, grabbing my bag. We'd decided to go for a walk since it was very nice outside.

"Do you really think the team can go far?" she said.

"Of course!" I assured her. "You just need practice and confidence. And you're doing that. I don't understand why don't both teams share notes."

"Is that an excuse to see Sugawara again?" Yui looked at me.

"What? No!" Was I blushing? Please no.

"You're blushing," she said in a singsong voice. Damn it.

"But I was not saying it because of him," I defended myself. "I want you guys to go far. And you can do it."

"I feel like you want to tell me something. Apart from that beautiful speech, which I thank you for, because I love the team." She was smart.

"I might have gone on a date with jersey number 2," I confessed.

"I'm so happy for you!" she smiled sincerely, but she didn't seem surprised. "Tell me everything. Right now." She said all of this very calmly. It was a nice change to not get an aggressive reaction.

"He asked on Friday. On Saturday we went stargazing. They were beautiful. It was kinda weird at first. We hadn't established what we were doing or what we felt. Then he said he liked me and I accidentally heard it."

"Accidentally?" Yui frowned.

"He thought I was asleep," I explained.

"That's so romantic! I wish I could have something like that," she sighed.

I laughed. "You talk like we were married already! We had a great time. I don't really know how it's going to go, but I'm happy and that's the important thing."

"You don't need to know anything, you just need to ask him out again," she said like it was the simplest thing in the world.

"What?"

"You aren't going to wait, are you? You have to take the lead! The important thing is that you like each other. That's the difficult part. And, you know, if you get close with him-"

"You want me to ask about Daichi, don't you?" I smirked.

"That's not..." She started saying, but I raised my eyebrows at her. "Okay, fine. But will you?"

"I'll try." That was the best I could offer her. She stared at me, waiting for something else. "And I'll ask him out."

"Good." Then added. "But I don't want you to think I'm taking advantage of this-.

"You totally are."

"Maybe a little," she admitted. "But my point is: I am happy for you. And I'd never let you do anything like this just because it interests me."

"I know, Yui."

She was honest and kind hearted. I trusted her. No wonder she was so good with people.

"I have to go," she said. "See you tomorrow, right?

"You bet."

On my way home I called Ishida and Kaneko. Both at the same time, because I honestly didn't have the patience to tell the same thing three times. They both listened to every detail, chiming in from time to time to ask something or squeal excitedly.

"The most important thing" demanded Ishida, "was there a kiss?"

"No."

"You're so boring," said Ishida. I was expecting that sort of comment from him, so I just laughed.

"She doesn't need a kiss yet," said Kaneko. "But don't worry, it'll happen eventually. By the way, I'm still mad at you for not answering my texts."

"I already said I was sorry, but I had to go. I was not being late because of you," I said.

"Stop talking about boring things," interrupted Ishida. "I said I was going to find you a boyfriend, but you did it yourself." said Ishida. "I want to know more about lover boy."

"I already told you everything," I said. "Besides, I haven't talked to him since Saturday..."

"But...?" Kaneko was impatient.

"But I was planning on asking him to do something."

"Was?" Ishida asked.

"Am, you annoying thing," I stuck my tongue out at him, then remembered he couldn't see it.

"Hey!" he complained.

"Stop fighting, children," said Kaneko in a motherly voice.

"Yes, mother," Ishida and I said in the same childish voice.

"So, where are you taking him?" asked Kaneko.

"I don't know yet, I haven't had the time to think about it..."

"Buuuut?" she said, extending the letter u. "Finish your sentences, please!"

"Well, I could take him to play volleyball."

"Absolutely not," said Ishida.

"I like it," Kaneko disagreed.

"Of course you do," muttered Ishida.

"It's my choice, so I'll do whatever I want," I reminded him.

Ishida started saying why I should not take him on a volleyball date when I received a text.

Suga: hi!

"Guys, Suga just texted me," I said.

"Ooh, we're going to witness a live conversation," said Kaneko.

You: hi!

Suga is typing...

"He said hi. I said hi. He's typing."

Suga: Hinata and Kageyama wanted to thank you for helping them with English.

Suga: I told them they could say it in person, but anyway

"He's talking about our little study group," I told my friends.

"Boring," commented Ishida.

You: sure thing! It also helps me revise, so it's cool.

You:I actually wanted to thank you for helping me. Your studying tips are great :))

Suga: Happy to help :))

I reported the conversation to them as I typed.

"Ask him out now!" said Kaneko.

"No, I'm doing that in person," I said.

"Yeah, better in person," said Ishida. "But tell him a meeting place or something."

"Right."

You: could you meet me tomorrow at the bikes zone? The one where we met the day of the flyers?

Suga: of course. All good?

"He's so cute," commented Kaneko.

You: yeah, don't worry

Suga: see you then

You: bye

"Why did you write that last bye?" said Ishida. By his tone you'd say I ruined a job interview or something. "It's lame and awkward."

"Are you seriously making me overthink a 'bye'?" I said.

"I know saying goodbye can be awkward, but..."

I heard a distant voice on the other side of the phone. "Coming!" Kaneko said to the voice. Then she talked to us. "Dinner time." And she left the call.

"I should go, too," said Ishida. "Bye, airhead."

"Later, knucklehead."
