Chapter 10
MY POOR BABY LANCE NO
IM SORRY IM SO EVIL GUYS
-
Keith held Lance close to his chest. He didn't know why, before this last week or so he saw them as strictly friends. But as he looked over the brunettes soft face and closed eyes, he realized that might've changed.
He ran his fingers through the boys soft hair and continued studying his features. Streetlights were shining onto his tan skin and making him glow.
Keith's heart began to ache as he noticed the thin lines of blood tracing the sides of his face. He assumed it was from the glass in the bottle and began wondering how many injuries he had acquired.
The night was beautiful. Streetlights illuminated he inside of Allura's pink convertible... that Shiro was still driving for some reason.
Shiro was driving fast, gripping the steering wheel. His lips were pressed into a thin line and Keith could tell he was stressed.
Because the top of Allura's car was off everyone's hair was flying around. They were silent and each teen could practically feel the nervous energy floating through the warm air.
Shiro careened into a parking space by the emergency section of the hospital. Keith swung the door open, with Lance still in his arms.
Keith was much smaller than Lance, and would probably not be able to carry him if it weren't for all the conditioning he did for skateboarding.
Lance's head was resting in Keith's arm, and he was finally beginning to stir slightly.
Keith cringed at this thought, he didn't want Lance to wake up before pain killers were running through his system.
Shiro, Pidge, and Hunk were all jogging slightly to catch up with Keith. The slim, pale boy must've had pounds of adrenaline rushing through his legs to make them carry him that fast.
Keith sprinted through the sliding glass doors and ran up to the woman at the front desk.
"help..." He managed to wheeze out. His head suddenly wasn't feeling to great... And he was trying his best to see straight.
Until now Keith had almost forgotten he had a near death experience tonight and had alcohol running through his system.
The woman had dark skin and her eyes got wide at the site of Lance's limp body. She quickly punched some numbers into a large white phone, connected to a cord and spoked to someone Keith assumed was a doctor or nurse.
The rest of Keith's group came running up behind him, panting.
"We will be taking the patient to room 667 on the third floor, while you four stay here to answer some questions about him."
As the woman finished her sentence two men in completely blue clothes came up behind Keith pushing a bed. They were definitely fast.
One of the men outstretched his arms towards Keith slightly. Keith very reluctantly placed Lance in the tan mans arms, and the man then put Lance on the bed. Keith turned his attention back towards the front office woman who was now seated behind the desk again.
"What's the patients first name?"
"Lance McLain" all four replied together.
-
After the four answered about 5 questions it was clear they weren't going to be much help. Of course they new basic things about Lance, and they new what happened, but because none of them were related or married to him they weren't legally helpful for much.
They told the woman he had fallen. Hard. But that was it.
So, they headed towards the waiting room and sat in silence.
Their plan was to wait for Lance's mother
The fluorescent lights made everything an eerily shade of white this late at night.
There was only one other person in the waiting room. A woman with bright red lipstick on, who hadn't moved much.
After about 10 minutes of painful silence Pidge got up and walked towards a vending machine "I'm hungry, does anyone else want something?"
Shiro shook his head and Hunk quietly said "chips please".
Keith got up and walked across the waiting room to stand at Pidge's side.
"Here dude" Pidge paused and held a plastic water bottle out to Keith "you're going to want this".
Keith looked at Pidge questioningly... Not knowing why his friend suddenly cared about his hydration needs.
"You're kinda... Intoxicated. Remember?"
Keith's eyes got wide. It's not like he had forgotten what had happened earlier that night... It was just that he was so concerned for Lance he didn't notice how truly awful he felt. Until now.
"I'm surprised you can even walk straight." Pidge said patting Keith's back.
As Pidge walked away Keith suddenly realized these weren't his friends. Two weeks ago, if someone told him this was going to happen he would never believe them. Keith, Lance, Pidge, and Hunk had all split up so long ago and now suddenly it was like all those years of distance never happened.
He cared about these people.
And now one of them was in pain.
Keith's palms were sweaty and his eyes were darting around the room. He was nervous and he began to breath heavily.
The hospital was a cold fluorescent white. The lights shined down brightly on Keith, making him uncomfortable. It had only been 15 minutes.
Suddenly, Keith felt a warm embrace wrap around him.
"Hello, boy" someone said. As he looked down slightly, he saw a tan woman with a bright smile. She was very small... Only about 5'2.
"Are you alright?" She said looking into Keith's strangely violet eyes with her caramel ones.
Her presence lit up the room. She had a yellow top on, making her tan skin radiate. Her brown hair was pulled into a tight bun.
All of the sudden the fluorescent lighting was gone, the boring white had turned bright, and Keith didn't feel so sad.
Maria McLain had this effect on people.
She smiled at Keith kindly, and he could see the soft wrinkles lining her features.
"I'm o-ok" he said, with his voice wavering.
"I haven't seen you in a long time Keith! You're so tall!" Her Spanish accent was thick, and she was so kind even in the most serious of situations. It was impressive to Keith.
The boy smiled. He had always liked Mrs. McLain.
Everyone did.
Maria turned her head slightly and saw the rest of the gang.
"Hello everyone!"
Hunks face lit up and Shinto suddenly looked less stressed. Even Pidge looked happier. She greeted all three of them quickly with hugs and some quick small talk.
The same front desk lady cleared her throat as Maria McLain finished her hug with Pidge.
"Are you the parent of Lance McLain?"
Maria let go of Pidge and began walking towards the woman, her smile fading " "Yes, I am"
"I need you to answer some quick questions and then you will be taken to his room"
Keith looked at Maria. She was standing tall, she looked so confident... Yet still kind. It was amazing.
-
It took Maria only a few minutes to fill out a simple personal information patient sheet.
The rest of the teens were sitting near her. They all had creased foreheads and worried looks. Everyone was tense.
Finally a tall fairly young looking Doctor with black hair came down and they were taken to Lance's floor.
After they were all seated outside of Lances small room Dr. Ember began speaking.
"We have diagnosed Lance with a very serious concussion. We assume it was from the fall you all talked about. We had to put a total of 3 stitches into his forehead to close the wounds. And Because he has not woken up we don't know the exact seriousness, but when he wakes up he will most likely experience minimal memory loss of what happened before the accident, vomiting, dizziness, a headache, and possibly some balance problems" Dr. Ember paused slightly to make sure the group was following, and other than Keith everyone was nodding.
The raven haired boy was looking at his shoes. Each time the doctor listen another way Lance would be in pain he felt his stomach churn.
It was awful.
He didn't know why he cared so much... But something deep inside him ached for what Lance would be going through. Keith tried to shake the feeling... But it never went away.
"When Lance wakes up he may struggle taking in new information for a while. He will want to sleep and most likely not want to keep a long conversation. He is currently asleep and I will let you all in so you can see him before you go." Everyone nodded again. Even Keith. "Now that I know what he is allergic to, I can give him painkillers. Mrs. McLain I will go over what needs to happen for recovery after he wakes up." The doctor offered them a thin, soft, smile and turned to open the door. Everyone got up and everything was silent. As they all stepped into the room there was a soft beep repeating itself in the corner, representing lances heartbeat. The quiet hum of machines surrounded them.
Keith gasped quietly when his eyes landed on Lance.
His forehead was covered in red. You could see where the bottle hit because of the deep gash, that now had thin threads running through it. All around that area there were clutters of scratches of cuts. The corners of his mouth were turned down. Keith wondered if the back of lances head where he fell was bleeding at all but as of now he was too focused on his friend to ask.
Keith heard Maria's soft gasp as she stepped deeper into the room. It broke his heart. He turned around and watched as Hunks eyes got misty and his eyebrows turned up. He continued to look as Shiro's lips parted and his jaw dropped. Pidge had a frown stretched across her face and Keith was surprised to see such emotion displayed on her face.
Lance wasn't like Keith. He was kind and warm and people loved him. Keith didn't understand why anyone would do this to him. Lance was popular. Everyone loved him. He was funny and smiley. Whatever Lance and Zain were talking about must've been serious. It must've been big to have caused all this.
The Raven haired boy was going to find out why anyone would cause someone so amazing so much pain...
and what was that secret Zain talked about?
